Try to open iChat window, version 4.0.8. in Time Machine. The TM window changes to a finder window. Is this normal for an application like TM? Trying to get back an open chat. not recorded.

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

I'm using a Mac Mini to target-disk my Macbook in order to transfer my User folder and some of my Applications. When I browse the Macbook's Applications folder via my Mac Mini, Finder beachballs every time I scroll down to a certain point (about a quarter of the way down), and I have to Relaunch. If I jump to the end of the scroll bar, it beachballs. I've tried column view, list view, and icon view, but whenever it tries to display folder content past that point, it beachballs.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of 10.5.8 client on a PPC-based G5 tower. Having an odd issue where, if I open a new Finder window and do a find (command-f), the window gets "stuck" (doesn't change to the "find"-based window, gets stuck at whatever it was when I hit command-f). The rest of the desktop and computer responds as normal, it's just that single window that gets stuck — it's almost like it the desktop/GUI won't update the drawing of just that window. I can open new Finder windows and do everything else — but the only way to get rid of the stuck window is to kill Finder and let is restart. I've tried re-applying te 10.5.8 combo updater, created a new admin user, etc. — all the standard troubleshooting stuff.

So I restored a backup from the 16th of June today from Time Machine. Just now I accessed 'Documents' folder from the 21st June backup and restored the file as I have made changes to Documents since the 16 th of June. Then I went back into 'Time Machine' to look for more files to restore.....and it has frozen on the Time Machine window with all the stars around the finder. How do I get out of time machine now? (Apart from shutting it down).

Is the "spotlight search window" still flickering during a research? (it seems a problem related with SSD machines in Leopard). Is it now warmer? colder? same? How about the fan? Did you notice changes in the way SL use it? Battery life? This machine with SSD is pretty snappy... is it even faster now?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a little problem with ichat which i suspect is something relatively simple however i still can't get it sorted out. A friend of mine just purchased a macbook (with OS X 10.5 and I have 10.4.11) and we have been video ichatting without any problems. I picked up a macbook (10.5) for my gf and got ichat set up and running with out any problems, tested the video chat and all was good. Now all of a sudden when i try to video chat with either of them i can only see my preview window and can't see them. They however don't have any problems and can see me and their preview window. They have video chatted with each other with no problems so it only seems to be me. Is there any weird compatibility issues with ichat 3.1.9 and ichat 4? Like I said, initially there was no problems with my friend and I but now that I picked up the macbook for the gf things are all out of sorts.

I think 3000 images deleted. Then I turned off computer. Are these files necessary? Can I restore them?

This morning I turned on TimeMachine (I do a weekly back up) and it showed a back up would occur within the hour. When I went back to look an hour later it was set on off. I turned it back on and within a minute it turned itself off. I have a lot of memory available on my standalone hard drive so what the heck is up with this shutting itself off?

I have previously used the GRAB utility to take a snapshot of an open Safari windiw, and the snapshot included the entire windiw contents. When I opened the snapshot in Preview, I could scroll up and down and view the entire contents of the original Safari windiw. Then, I tried it again a few hours later on a different Safari window, but I then got only the part of the windiw that was visible in the browser at the time that I GRABbed the window (i.e., when I took the snapshot).What do I need to do to get the entire windiw?

Why is hiding a window / app not a 1-click window control? Perhaps with Option+Click as Hide All Others.Window controls exist to streamline common tasks; hiding is a very common task in OS X.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was playing with the maximize button on a Finder window a few days ago and toggling it would yield a different size every time (guess I was amused by that). So it go into a state where the resize corner is out of reach always now. Clicking on the maximize button does not change the size at all and just remains there. I want to be able to resize Finder again. How do I do it? For reference, attached is the screenshot of my desktop with Finder window, so you can see what I mean. I am unable to find a way to get it to a stage where the full window can be shown and I can resize it.

I'll be typing away and then bang, I am back on the finder window and my application will be in the background, so I will have to click back on the application to continue working. View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G55) with Leopard. On a typical work day I'll open Finder to look for pdf files. I'll perform my search for pdf documents and, as expected, all pdf documents that exist on my Mac are listed in Finder. In the Finder dialog box there are headings at the top of the columns that include "Name", "Kind" and "Last Opened". When I single click on any one of the listed pdf documents, the path to that document's location is given at the bottom of the Finder window. Every month I save hundreds of different pdf documents in about 135 different customer file locations.
As a result, I need to be able to add a column heading that orients the results on a file location basis. On my former XP I could add many different headings, including one that simply stated "Filed In" (or something along those lines). By clicking on the heading "Filed In", all of the pdf documents would be grouped and listed by their file location. My question is: Can I add a "Filed In" heading to the search results window of Finder so that I can click on "Filed In" and group search results by the file locations?
How do I open a folder in a new finder window? I know on a PC you can right click the folder and choose open in new window. How is this accomplished on the mac?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I first got my macbook 2 months ago I could command+space and open the spotlight dialog box and type say "i" and it would start displaying ical, iweb, you know everything that starts with I. Like it should. Somewhere down the line things got funky. Now I command +space, open the box, type the letter of the application i want or whatever and nothing is displayed in the finder window. However when I move my cursor to the actual magnifying glass in the corner after I typed the search, and click it, it will show the results. Or if I type what I want to find and then command space again it will show it. So what did I do wrong? I want it back the way it way) Just having to command + space twice, once to open the search box and then one more time after i enter the search string, is getting annoying. Or having to click on the magnifying glass after entering the search.

I recall someone once saying open a window, press CTRL then close the window and the next window will appear in the same spot as the now closed window. That doesnt work, nor does pressing command or any other combination I have tried.
No matter how many times I reposition the finder window, it always pops up on the bottom right corner. I always have to drag it back to the middle. Is there a way to save the position?

When I click on a folder on the desktop it opens the window on the second screen instead of on the one on my computer. When I Mirror Displays it appears again on the computer, but when I turn it off (it has to be turned off when I run the show) the window opens in the second screen. I have restarted, reset the PRAM, don't know how to get the window to appear on the primary screen..

I was adding some music to my idisk's public folder when the copying process froze;got stuck. The little spinning disc would not go away.
I closed down all other applications. My finder window was frozen with that disc, and could not force quit it, even though tried several techniques to do so. I finally turned off the computer manually.
When I turned my imac back on, the finder window was gone. I cannot open a finder window from the finder image on my dock.
My word documents, Safari, email all work, but my desktop is blank and I cannot open any finder window.
I think that it must have been something that the idisk caused.
So everytime I switch between a space, the same finder window is following me to every single screen. I'm not sure how to turn this off so every finder window stays on it's space seperately.
