I find that doing anything that requires admin access is currently impossible. The authentication window won't show up. For example, opening up System Preferences > Accounts and clicking on the lock just makes it say "Authenticating..." for a few seconds before going back to "Click on the lock to make changes". What could possibly cause this?
when I press "Command+Control+D" when i hover over a word to look up its meaning in Dictionary it doesn't do anything... and when I Control-Click it and select "Look up in Dictionary" it doesnt do anything either... and I tried doing both things when I had Dictionary running in the background and when it was closed and nothing.... so, what can I do?
since i got my macbook i used to always close the lid to put it to sleep between classes and every time I open it, it asks me for authentication and password... now, it's not doing that! and if I close it, and perhaps, go to the bathroom or something, anybody can open and it logs in w/o password....
maybe I changed something in Settings w/o realizing but can't remember...
[EDIT]
I just remembered! in iTunes, I want to disable the little link button to iTunes Store next to each song/artist/etc... I know if I disable iTunes Store from Parental Controls, it'll do it.... but if I do, I won't be able to download Apps! How can I turn them off??
I'm trying to get my leopard client to access sharepoints on my leopard server using kerberos authentication established at login. I'll list what I have done already bellow:
- OD set up with a username (short and long) and password that is the same as that being used on the client laptop.
- Client laptop is bound to the OD
- modified /etc/authorization: <string>builtin:authenticate,privileged</string> to <string>builtin:krb5authnoverify,privileged</string>
When I log in it accepts my password and allows me into the laptop. The OD logs show that authentication to the server took place (I believe) (username and domain intentionally masked): Code: Feb 09 13:39:05 server.xxxx.priv krb5kdc[512](info): AS_REQ (7 etypes {18 17 16 23 1 3 2}) 10.0.1.121: NEEDED_PREAUTH: user@SERVER.xxxx.PRIV for krbtgt/SERVER.xxxx.PRIV@SERVER.xxxx.PRIV, Additional pre-authentication required

If I authenticate once then I can access any other sharepoints with no problems, however, I'd like to be able to use the kerberos ticket I believe I have from the system login to do this AFP authentication.
When attempting to move a file that will need administrator authentication, the authentication window to enter a password does not populate. Thus, I am unable to move the file.

I have a Mac Mini running 10.7.3 that I made the mistake of unchecking the show input menu in login window. Now I can't log in at all. I have tried to delete the "com.apple.loginitems.plist" using screen sharing, Lion in all its wisdom tells me I don't have permission.
I then tried to create a start up disk on one of my 2TB disks, somehow the system wasn't installed, just all the included apps. I then tried reinstalling lion on the Mac Mini, after over an hour it restarted with the same blank screen. Now when I go to the App Store Lion is no longer available to me.

when I tried to launch the macosx lion, after display the login window, the whole window become black.
Then I inject the U-Disk that has MacOSX Lion Installer in it, after the white screen, it become black too. So I can not re-install macosx.
Then I tried press `shift` at login. It also didn't solve the problem. At last I tried the single user mode. It appears some problems:

I have a new install of Mac 10.7.4 on a 21" iMac. I have the iMac set to automatically log out after 14 minutes of idle time. On many occasions when the logout is triggerd, the user account will log out, but the screen does not display the login window, it still shows an image of the last state of when the computer was logged in. When I move the mouse, the screen acts as if it's erasing the pixels off the screen, showing bits and pieces of the login screen in the background. If I type a user ID and password, a small area clears around the login fields so I can see the fields and log in.
This was originally happening when a screen saver was enabled, I have since removed the screen saver. This did not make a difference.
I have the Preference Pane>Security>Advanced set to log out at 14 minutes and the Preference Pane>Energy Saver>Display Sleep set to go black at 15 minutes.
I have tried various different times/settings, but have not been able to fix this.
Since this configuration is for a Lab setting, I really need for the computer to log out cleanly and go back to the login screen.
My imac on Lion 10.7.4 has for several nights logged off by itself. Nothing is set in System Preferences to make it do this, and I have checked all settings to make sure of this: Security and Privacy/Advanced: "Log out after x minutes of inactivity" is unticked.Energy Saver: computer/display sleep are at 10 minutes, put the computer to sleep where possible is unticked.
When I return to it in the morning, the login screen is not "normal". On a few occasions, there has been a photo-screensaver image, and weirdly, only when I "paint away" pixels of this image with the mouse is the log-in window slowly revealed behind. On other occasions, the log-in window has been immediately visible, but the screen has been half-black/half login-window, but not uniformly so.
This is annoying because, although all my apps and documents are restored, this takes several minutes (my imac has also been running slower and slower recently), e.g. some apps take a couple of minutes to re-appear. Some processes that were running may need to be restarted from scratch.
Nothing has been altered in the System recently, apart from maybe standard updates as recommended by Software Update (did not take much notice). The last thing I was doing before this first occurred was running TestDisk on Terminal on this imac to try to analyse (only) an External Hard Drive (not previously associated with this imac). On two occasions, the TestDisk run (which I left to run overnight) did not finish because of the log-outs. However, TestDisk was not doing or checking anything related to this imac (apart from actually running on it, in Terminal).

I just installed Lion 10.4.7 upgrade on my iMac (only 6 months old). I have 5 user accounts on this iMac (A, B, C, D and Guest). With prior version of Lion, these would all be displayed in the login window for selection. Now, with 10.4.7, depending upon the resolution in effect by a user when he logs out, if it is a lower resolution (i.e., 1024X768) the login window will not contain the rightmost user selections, D and Guest in this example. If the user had a higher resolution (i.e., 1920X1080) all 5 users account selections will be visible. An individual user's desired resolution should not be effecting the login window, should it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on lap top (iBook G4 Mac OS x 10.3) i get the following message "Login Window Starting" I followed Apple support guidance - specifically safe start and performing the fsck then reboot process and neither works for me. I don't have the disks any more so I cant use them for reloading the software. I want to sell the laptop so i just want to format the HD. Is it possible to format from command lines?

The loginout windows on safari reports "unencrypted" , but analyzing tcp/ip traffic with Wireshark, it really seems that NTLM has been used and so password is really crypted..

When installing programs that requires me to provide admin privileges to install them, it fails. It always fails, its not just for one specifik program.
1. I click the .app, .pkg, .mpkg or whatever is about to be installed.
2. Click through the wizard that shows up (license, install location etc)
3. When it is time to install, a dialog window pops up. This is where i write my password and click OK.
4. The password is accepted and the dialog closes.
5. Now nothing happens, the program does not get installed.
(when the installer is just dragging the app to Applications, it works)

How do I turn off authentication on a brand new Mac Book Pro?
Info:MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.3), May be a MacBook Pro
Using Apple Mail on Mac Pro , ver 10.7.4--have RCN as ISP Intermittently I receive a message saying "password rejected by pop server"-- I receive emails properly otherwise but out of nowhere this goes on for weeks. I had this problem on previous OS with Entourage. RCN said it was Apple. Apple said it was Entourage. Switched to Apple Mail now and getting same problem Apple says Under Pref-settings-advanced Use Authenticated Pop, instead of Password-but this doesn't work at all. RCN is useless, have no idea and blames apple. Applecare says " Oh, i don't know anything about AppleMail."

I have been reading through the Lion Server pages for Active Directory and came across the following question. Does the procedure listed in the URL below allow the users whose Macs are joined to the OS X server, to login with Active Directory credentials. Pass-through auth. for lack of a better term. [URL]...The procedure reads as if it is just joining the server to the domain and not configuring authentication.

I've recently joined/binded to our domain. All appears to be working as expected. Although one message keeps popping up in the finder at random moments. Doesn't seem related to anything that is being done at the time. It says Proxy authenication required. Authentication for HTTP proxy my.proxy.name and has username and password to be filled in.
Where/what logs can be viewed to determine what program is wanting to get thru the proxy? I'm guessing it is an auto-update of something but I've turned everything off that I can find and it still is popping up. Hoping a log somewhere will tell me what is trying to gain access so I can turn off the attempt.
I can't seem to deactivate the automatic login that occurs upon opening my MacBook. It worked fine on my previous OS X installation, but now the login window will not appear. I've tried adjusting differing Login Options settings and restarting.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy parents share a Mac Mini. Often when I'm at their house, I notice that it's been left at the login screen. Presumably one person logged out thinking they were leaving the computer available for the other and then never put it to sleep at the login screen. The issue is that Energy Saver prefs don't seem to apply when there is no user logged in. The computer just sits there with the login window display indefinitely. It never goes to sleep or turns the display off.
Is there any way to have some sort of daemon run only while no one is logged in that would either shut down the computer or put it to sleep after a specified number of minutes of being idle at the login screen? While the Mac Mini is a very energy efficient computer, it still makes no sense for it to be on for dozens of hours each week unnecessarily.
I would love it if my mac could switch to the login window upon sleep (or wakeup)... given the usage patterns of my laptop in my household, where someone uses the laptop, closes it, and someone else picks it up to use it, it would be the most streamlined way of switching between accounts...
The closest solution, which isn't quite right, is to require password for the last user account to be used... not exactly the best solution...
Does anyone know of a keyboard shortcut to go to the Login Window (fast user switching) like the Win+L combination for Windows XP?
Or perhaps a keyboard shortcut to lock the machine, like CTRL+ALT+DEL for Windows 2000/XP?
I've been searching for what seems like hours, and I can't find anything.
Well I bought my macbook in Taiwan. All my applications are in English but the only problem is that my login window is in Chinese. Is there any way i can change it to English.
I've tried to go in System pref- International and change the language order but it still doesn't work.
One of the things I liked about 10.4 is that you could type ahead before the login window was fully started and it would keep what you typed. In 10.5, OSX discards everything you typed before it fully started. Is there any way to enable the 10.4 behavior?

Reason is cosmetic ... solid window is screen centered and blocks too much of HD wallpaper.
I was able to have mac mail to ask me my password each time I open the app, but ever since I put new system in, I haven't been able to figure this out..

I just change the name of my computer and now when I restart I don't have the login window. The computer just keep going in the Mac OS window with the blue line forever.
