Intel Mac :: Lion Reinstall Stuck Over Internet In Recovery Mode

Apr 14, 2012

Bought a used 2011 iMac. Wanted to wipe everything clean from previous user and install lion. After installing lion I went into the recovery mode by pressing apple r, then wiped the harddrive clean, and now am trying to reinstall lion over the internet. At first it was working fine, eta was 90 mins. When it got down to 4 mins it suddenly went back up to 90 mins and has been stuck there for 5 hours. The computer is not frozen since I can move the mouse and everything.

I accidently deleted some file on my computer that wouldn't let me start up my MacBook pro, 13 Inch, so I had to press Command- R at start up (brought me to Lion Recovery) and I choose reinstall lion and I started it yesterday morning and all day and over night. It's barely half way through and it says "148 Hours Left" which is crazy.. Should I just wait? is this normal? what do I do?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Reinstall Recovery HD To Cloned Drive?

Feb 16, 2012

I recently upgraded the HDD on my MBP and did a clone from my previous HD which had Lion installed. However I've now noticed my new drive does not include the Recovery HD. Is there an easy way to re-install the Recovery HD to my drive without messing with my entire install/system contents? I made a Lion boot-disk on a USB key so I have access to that. I normally do a clean install for all my installs and would love to avoid wiping my HD reinstalling all of lion, just to get the recovery disk.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Does The Recovery-Reinstall Preserve User-Data

Apr 5, 2012

The Macbook of a friend of mine doe not boot anymore after an abordet Itunes-Upadte yesterday evenig. How ever, the Save-Boot-Log tells me, that
"The System bootstrapper has crashed: Trace/BPT trap: 5" I assume that i have to reinstall OS X to get the Macbook run again. This is where i'm sure, whether the Install via Recovery-Partition -> Reinstall Lion does a complete Clean-Install (all Data that's been on the HDD will be gone) or does "only" some Repair-Install-Stuff which preserve the personal Data and Software on the HDD. Nevertheless i'm going to Backup (CCC) the broken installation to be on the safe side anyway.

MacBook :: Frequent Stalls/crashes In OS X 10.5.8

Sep 24, 2009

I'm new here to this forum and I'd like to get some advice. I've had my 2008 macbook 2.4ghz-160gb since august of last year. I upgraded it to 4gb of ram in the early stages and had no issues till lately.

For the last week, almost daily, Id get the beachball for a long period of time. This happens most frequently when I surf the internet. Occasionally this may occur when i play music in itunes but that is probably due to my library being store on an external hd. With that being said though, as I mentioned, it most likely occurs when I surf the internet. Many times, its not just a browser crash but a system wide crash where my mouse can move but when i click anything in the background, it would have no effect (but my mouse can move still). Only way to 'resolve' this was to do a hard shutdown and restart by holding the power button for few seconds. Of course, this issue keeps happening and it pissed me off so I looked around the net to find some possible solutions and many sites claimed flash being an issue. I uninstalled flash and retested and the problem still occurred. Reading maclife, it mentioned about some fsck -fy thing during boot up so i ran that test and found no errors. Restarted again, did some surfing and still the problem.

Mac Pro :: Frequent Crashes When Computer Is Sleeping?

Jun 29, 2012

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008. Here's my set-up: BootDrive (Mercury Excelsior PCI SSD 240 GB): contains OS X and applicationsDataDrive (2.25 TB RAID 0 with three 750 GB drives): contains files, pictures, music, videoTime Machine Backup (2 TB drive) Recently I've been experiencing frequent crashes. These mostly happen when the computer is sleeping. For example, I'll put it to sleep before going to bed, and I'll wake up in the morning to find it unresponsive when I attempt to wake it up. (Also: the computer tends to be waking itself up from sleep, i.e. I'll wake up and it will be powered up, even though I put it to sleep the night before.) When I notice that it has crashed, I hold down the power button on the tower until it shuts off, then press it again to start up. When I do, it boots into Safe Mode. Does this suggest a problem is due to a peripheral or drive?

The first time this happened, one of my internal drives got corrupted and I had to use Disk Utility to repair it. The second time it happened the permissions on my data drive got screwed up, and a few files on that drive got corrupted (including my Lightroom library). It just happened a third time, and once again the permissions on the Data drive are screwed up. If I recall, this all started happening after I installed the Mercury Excelsior PCI SSD. But it appears to be functioning well. I've run Verify Disk and it says it has no problems.

Using Lion Internet Recovery On New Mac Pro

May 10, 2012

I have a Mac Pro that I purchased in February 2012, and I'm selling it because the printing sub-system on a Mac is terrible.  Won't go into details here -- suffice to say I've spent these past 3 months going round-and-round with printing issues, and I'm tired of dealing with it.Since I'm selling it, I wanted to erase everything and re-set it all back to factory specs.I had two partitions on there, the original Mac partition, and a BootCamp partition. Booting up using Command+R and selecting Disk Utility wouldn't let me erase those partitions and create a single new partition Kept giving me a Cannot Unmount Disk error. So I used a partition manager on The Ultimate Boot CD to erase the paritions on my Mac's HDD..Figured I would then use Internet Recovery to re-load everything on there. Don't really care if it takes a few hours to download. But Internet Recovery is not working..I hold Command+R or Command+Option+R and they both do the same thing -- a blinking folder with a question-mark in the midddle of it.

And the only thing I can find that will let me try using an external disk to boot with is something called Lion Recovery Disk Assistant -- but I can't use that because it requires a functioning Mac with a Recovery Partition. So how do I get this stupid thing to boot up to the Internet Recovery mode? I need to get it ready to ship later today.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Which Version Is Installed With Internet Recovery

Would very much like to know which version of lion will be on my system when I perform the Lion internet recovery. I assume it downloads the latest build so I do not need to update Lion again. OS X V10.7 Lion :: Create Lion Recovery Media Without Internet?

Mar 30, 2012

I have not been able to connect to the AppStore. My internet connection may be too slow or there is some other problem. The Apple helpdesk is less than helpful. They do not assist with connection problems. Result: No AppStore for me. So How do I upgrade to Lion? (The problem started when the Lion USB stick was not yet available) One possible solution is to buy a new MacBook. I may have to, because the one I am using is falling apart.

So, suppose I have this brand new MacBook and no connection to the AppStore. Is there a way to create a recovery DVD or USB stick from the new MacBook, without buying the official USB stick?

All articles about Lion recovery assume that you have an internet connection. I have news: not every internet connection counts as an internet connection as far as Apple is concerned. Funny thing is, that all updates to Leopard and Snow Leopard went without problems.

Mac Mini :: Mid 2011 Kernel Panic With Lion Internet Recovery

Mar 25, 2012

My Mac Mini froze while using Safari and watching a youtube video, so I restarted the machine by holding down the power button, then on startup I reloaded Safari, and it completely froze again. This time around, I got a kernel panic on boot. I tried booting into single user mode by holding down the shift key, but that still gave me a kernel panic. So I tried using the Lion Internet Recovery mode by holding down command-option-R when booting. The OS showed the Internet Recovery progress bar, but when it completed and the machine rebooted, I got a kernel panic again.

Is there anything else I can try to recover this machine, or do I need to take it into an Apple store to have them fix it?  It's a mid-2011 model, so I don't have a DVD drive in it, so I can't use a boot disc, although I guess I could use a bootable USB, but I don't have another machine to create one with.

I figure if it kernel panics from an Internet Recovery, then that takes my hard drive and anything that was installed on it out of the equation. I've also disconnected all external devices, drives, etc, and only have a monitor and keyboard/mouse attached to it, so that rules out any other devices that might be causing problems.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Recovery Installer Still Trying To Download 4gig Image From Internet

May 18, 2012

I just bought an SSD for my MacBook Pro and I am trying to use a Lion recovery installation USB hard drive that I created when Lion was first launched. I have successfully used this drive to install Lion on my old MacBook but I can't actually remember using it for this MacBook Pro.

When I try and do a clean install of Lion on my MacBook Pro with this new SSD, instead of installing from the drive like I have successfully done in the past, it's trying to download a 4.044 GB package from the Internet. I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't estimating 5-6 hours to download and it's already failed to download twice?

I figure it's downloading it again for few possible reasons.
1. There is a more current installer available than this one I am using so its trying to download a current version.
2. I can't use this installer because it was was created on a different MacBook.
What the reason might Be?

MacBook Pro :: OS X Lion Internet Recovery - Does Not Detect Hard Drive

Jun 24, 2014

I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.2 and it recently stopped booting. Got the gray screen with the folder that has the question mark on it. I have attempted to use Command + R to do a Internet Recovery of the system, but once I get to the Mac OS X Lion screen to select where i want to install OSX, there are no hard drives listed.

So I figure, the hard drive (Hitachi 500GB that came with the Mac) is damaged or not functioning correctly. This doesn't seem to be the case because I can hook it up to a notebook SATA hard drive enclosure, connect it to my other MBP and read all the contents of the drive! This was good news, as i was able to copy off all important data, etc.

Using Disc utility, the partitions check out, and the drive appears to be functioning OK.

Verify and Repair volume “Macintosh HD”

Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

Checking extents overflow file.

Checking catalog file.

Checking multi-linked files.

Checking catalog hierarchy.

Checking extended attributes file.

Checking volume bitmap.

Checking volume information.

The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.

Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

I have purchased a replacement hard drive and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

My question now is this:

Am I able to do some kind of time machine backup, make an image, or do some kind of target drive restore from this hard drive since it is accessible on my other computer?

I don't mind reloading the operating system on the original MBP, but would really like to avoid the process of setting up all the applications, settings, etc if this drive is in fact functional.

MacBook Pro :: Frequent Dropouts Of Wireless Internet Connection

Jul 21, 2009

I have a new (June 09 model) 15" MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz and I'm experiencing frequent (every 3-5 minute) drop outs on my wireless internet connection, but only when I'm running Mac OS X-- my Windows Vista Ultimate partition is operating flawlessly. After Googling, I have come to the conclusion that this is extremely common in MBPro's since there is such a saturation of search results?

Background on the wireless networks used:
- home: 128-bit WEP-open
- work: WPA2-Enterprise

Again, I haven't experienced a single disconnect when running the following:
- Vista - wireless
- Vista - wired
- Mac OS X - wired

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Reinstall Bundled Apps After Running Recovery

Apr 28, 2012

I previously had Lion installed and decided to wipe my Mac and re-upgrade to Lion. So, I've both zapped the parameter RAM and erased the hard drive, then done a fairly normal install of Snow Leopard. It successfully goes through this process, using my recovery disc, I get through Apple's initial "out-of-box experience" including setting up a user account, and get to the desktop.

There are no issues to this point, no errors, etc. However, having put in the bundled apps DVD, when I run the installer, I get the error:"There were errors with the installation. The installation failed. An unknown error occurred. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."I have repeatedly gotten this error. I have both done a simple reformat of my HDD and a "write zeros" option.

Also, I have tried this before and after doing any software updates. I've also used the Apple Hardware Test which says there were no problems. Disk Utility shows S.M.A.R.T. status as verified, hard drive formatting takes a normal amount of time, and there are no other symptoms of any kind. The unit is stock, and there is nothing attached except for the AC adaptor. The only thing I haven't done yet is do the Lion upgrade, but honestly I shouldn't have to do that just to reinstall the bundled apps.

Mac Pro :: Reinstall Recovery HDD After Full Time Machine Recover?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Mail 5.2 Frequent Crashing

Apr 27, 2012

I recently (2 months ago) purchased a new mac book pro and migrated everything from my older mac book pro running Snow Leopard to Lion.Since moving to Lion I have been experiencing frequent crashes of Mac Mail, I spend a large portion of my work day in mail and experience this as many as a dozen times a day. Mac Mail will crash while

1) composing an email,
2) when clicking a link in an email
3) clicking the attachment icon to add an attachment
4) clicking on an attachment that has been sent to me
5) somestimes just trying to exit/close Mac Mail and the it hangs and I have tp force quit. After Mac Mail crashes and is restarted, clicking on the same link or attachment will workI have removed my mail IMAP folder and settings and re-established the connection from scratch but the problem persists.I have ran the disk permissions repair utility and the problem persists. I have ran the verfiy disk utility and it reports no problems.I have ran the Apple hardware tests including the extended tests and no hardware issues are found. Has one experienced somewthing similiar?Does anyone have any suggestions where to start looking for the root cause? All crash reports seem to look [code]
