Mac Mini :: Mid 2011 Kernel Panic With Lion Internet Recovery
Mar 25, 2012
My Mac Mini froze while using Safari and watching a youtube video, so I restarted the machine by holding down the power button, then on startup I reloaded Safari, and it completely froze again. This time around, I got a kernel panic on boot. I tried booting into single user mode by holding down the shift key, but that still gave me a kernel panic. So I tried using the Lion Internet Recovery mode by holding down command-option-R when booting. The OS showed the Internet Recovery progress bar, but when it completed and the machine rebooted, I got a kernel panic again.Â
Is there anything else I can try to recover this machine, or do I need to take it into an Apple store to have them fix it? It's a mid-2011 model, so I don't have a DVD drive in it, so I can't use a boot disc, although I guess I could use a bootable USB, but I don't have another machine to create one with.Â
I figure if it kernel panics from an Internet Recovery, then that takes my hard drive and anything that was installed on it out of the equation. I've also disconnected all external devices, drives, etc, and only have a monitor and keyboard/mouse attached to it, so that rules out any other devices that might be causing problems.Â

My mac is 2.7ghz i5 with a 1TB HD. It has crashed about five times this week. Two kernel panics, two freezes where I can't move anything, and once it just plain shut off. I've heard that it could be the network card causing the kernel panics. I do know that the airport card has been performing very poorly but I assumed it was just because there are about three walls between my computer and the router.

diagnose this kernel panic. I recently installed a SSD and 16gb of RAM both from Crucial, and was wondering whether that is potentially the problem. This is on an early 2011 Macbook Pro.Â

Lately i've been playing around with minecraft and developing a few mods. Every lets say ~ 20 minutes I've been getting a kernel panic with the top kext being com.apple.BluetoothMultitouch... The only thing that I know of that is bluetooth and multitouch is my magic mouse... That seems odd because the magic mouse is built for mac osx. i've been hearing around that my mac could have a bad osx install or faulty hardware. I just hope its not faulty hardware, even though my apple care has not expired yet.

I'm getting this quite frequently now. When I put my MacBook Pro to sleep (bought in novemeber 2011, running OS X Lion 10.7.3) and turn it back on, it crashes after I log in in my account. This is getting quite annoying, and I was wondering if there's something I could do to prevent it to give me a kernel panic after each wake up. I certainly don't want it to become more and more frequent. I don't have a Mac installation DVD so I wouldn't be able to reinstall OS X Lion.Â

After downloading and installing the latet updates this evening my computer screen went to a dark gray screen similar to the iCloud background. After it sat like that for an hour I powered down using the power button. When I restarted it I got a gray screen with Panic in the first line and a small amout of text. I ran disk utility from the Snow Leopard disk but when it restarted I got the same screen as before. The updates included Aperture 3.3, Camera Raw, airport utility and several others.

I installed 10.7.3 (combo) from 10.7.2 yesterday on my Mac Mini and everything was smooth-ish, a bit of slowness here and there.Â
Today my Mac crashed completely, I couldn't Force Quit the app I was in, nothing. So I held down the power button and did a restart. After I did this, all I got was the grey apple with the spinning wheel for ages and ages, and then got a Kernel Panic screen.Â
I did what it said and restarted again. This time it just repeated and repeated the startup tone, and then going to kernel panic again.
I have tried everything I know of. P-RAM reset, Safe Boot, but nothing works.Â

This issue just started a couple of days ago. I noticed something weird happening when I watching a YouTube video - the video stopped playing but the sound kept on going like nothing was wrong. Anyway I ran the Apple Hardware Test yet it detected no problems. I even went through the extended test just to make sure. I originally got this machine as Snow Leopard but upgrading to Lion.
Basically what happens is the whole screen freezes and i reboot and I am able to go about its business until the next freeze. The times that I have came back into the room to see it froze up was when the screensaver had turned on or when I was playing any kind of game it seems like it had frozen up(one time playing a game in VMWARE (windows xp). I dont know if this could be a GPU issue or not.

i'm experiencing frequent kernel panics on Lion with 10.7.3. This has only started occuring in the last week with no obvious changes before it started. I've repaired disk permissions, used OnyX to clean everything up, and it still occurs (approx 4-5 times per day). My computer is a 15" MacBook Pro with 8gb ram, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, NVidia GeForce 9400m 256mb video card. It seems to occur more frequently when I have an external drive attached (either Firewire or USB). As my profession is video editing, it's not really viable for me to simply not have one connected!! This is starting to get quite frustrating as it interrupts my work significantly.Â

I'm aware of the Airport issue mentioned on these forums (and have tried the kext fix for that without any luck). I have KPs when watching 4+ minute long videos on Youtube (have no issue using iMovie for longer videos or watching videos from my own harddrive), sometimes when the screensaver is on or shortly after the computer goes unidle, and sometimes for no apparent reason. I've already had 2-3 KPs in the past 4 hours. This is my first Mac and not at all what I was expecting. Â
Sometimes the screen will flicker rapidly, other times I will get a black screen, pink screen, or the screen will "glitch" and move halfway to the left (right is now on the left and left on the right). I can sometimes delay the crash if I pause the video (the screen starts to twitch or have "lightning" flashes across parts of it) but it will eventually crash anyway. Â
I usually use Firefox but have had the same crash in Safari so it's not browser-related as far as I can tell.Â

My computer broke down so I had a repaired and the original software was re-installed and it worked perfect. Whenever I restore from Time Machine, I get the kernel panic error. I have to reload the original software and it works perfect again. I tried using Migration Assistant, but it fails every time after 30 minutes of saying 1 minute left to transfer documents. I go in to Time Machine and view my external hard drive and all my stuff is still there, except I noticed my applications are crossed out. At least the non-default ones. That may just be because they're not currently loaded.Â
What can I do from here? I was using Lion before my computer went down. I'm now using the OSX install DVD. I also have the Snow Leopard, but haven't tried that, if it even makes a difference.

I had the hard drive replaced in in my mid 2009 17" MacBook pro. After the clean install of lion I migrated my data from time machine (lion) to the new clean partition.. Upon completion the machine is unresponsive. The progress wheel turning for 10 minutes. I force quit and restart to kernel panic. I have been through this 3 times same sequence of events same results.

computer is connected to cable modem & router. There are 2 other computers on the same router, they other computer connect fine. I have swapped the working connections with the mac mini in question. Restarts don't always correct the problem. cleared safari history, reset cache, repaired permissions, etc. Computer will work for anywhere between 5 minutes to 1 hour, then lose the internet connection. Using same computer to manage iphone4s (if that matters)

I have a Mac Pro that I purchased in February 2012, and I'm selling it because the printing sub-system on a Mac is terrible. Won't go into details here -- suffice to say I've spent these past 3 months going round-and-round with printing issues, and I'm tired of dealing with it.Since I'm selling it, I wanted to erase everything and re-set it all back to factory specs.I had two partitions on there, the original Mac partition, and a BootCamp partition. Booting up using Command+R and selecting Disk Utility wouldn't let me erase those partitions and create a single new partition Kept giving me a Cannot Unmount Disk error. So I used a partition manager on The Ultimate Boot CD to erase the paritions on my Mac's HDD..Figured I would then use Internet Recovery to re-load everything on there. Don't really care if it takes a few hours to download. But Internet Recovery is not working..I hold Command+R or Command+Option+R and they both do the same thing -- a blinking folder with a question-mark in the midddle of it.
And the only thing I can find that will let me try using an external disk to boot with is something called Lion Recovery Disk Assistant -- but I can't use that because it requires a functioning Mac with a Recovery Partition. So how do I get this stupid thing to boot up to the Internet Recovery mode? I need to get it ready to ship later today.

I've just ordered an i5 Mac Mini and while it's destined to be used as a media-centre/ streamer connected to my TV via HDMI, initially I want to hook it up to the display on my 2011 iMac. Can one of you clever bods point me in the direction of what cable I need, and also what do I need to do to the iMac to make it behave as just a monitor? Is it just a matter of plugging in the cables and off I go?

Would very much like to know which version of lion will be on my system when I perform the Lion internet recovery. I assume it downloads the latest build so I do not need to update Lion again. I also assume that there will be no difference in Lion version when I perform an erase and install or just an install over the existing installation.

I have not been able to connect to the AppStore. My internet connection may be too slow or there is some other problem. The Apple helpdesk is less than helpful. They do not assist with connection problems. Result: No AppStore for me. So How do I upgrade to Lion? (The problem started when the Lion USB stick was not yet available)Â One possible solution is to buy a new MacBook. I may have to, because the one I am using is falling apart.Â
So, suppose I have this brand new MacBook and no connection to the AppStore. Is there a way to create a recovery DVD or USB stick from the new MacBook, without buying the official USB stick?Â
All articles about Lion recovery assume that you have an internet connection. I have news: not every internet connection counts as an internet connection as far as Apple is concerned. Funny thing is, that all updates to Leopard and Snow Leopard went without problems.Â

Using iMovie and got a (-50) error and ran Disk Utilities to see if everything was okay. Unfortunatly it wasn't and recomended that I hold down the command and r key while doing a restart. When I do this, the Apple logo comes up, but then switches to an icon of a circle with a diagonal line through it and then I get a kernel panic shortly after. how my App Store purchesed lion can run disk utilities in protected mode?
