OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Sort By File Size In Smart Folders?
Feb 18, 2012
The Apple info says use pop-up menus to select search criteria, but where is that? I wish to have the folder show all documents bigger than a certain size (ie. video) appear in the folder. My next question, is can I then drag to the Trash from that folder and know that they're deleted from their original location. I assume appearing in a smart folder is like an alias, its not reall copied to this new location.Â
I really prefer Windows way of sorting a folder, first folders and then files, is there a way to do it in Snow Leopard? I have done this: [URL:...] But that doest work for me in SL.
I've made a Smart Folder to have one place to look for any bills I've paid in the last 40 days, with the following parameters:Â
- Search within a folder within my Home folder called "Accounts & Services"
- Name begins with "PD 2" (all my paid bills are labeled like "PD 2012-02-01 AT&T," for example)
- Last modified date is within last 40 days
The folder worked when I created it, and whenever I opened it for a day or so afterwards.Â
But a month later when I open the Smart Folder, the latest bills aren't there.Â
When I "Show Search Criteria," I see the "Search within" has been changed to a circular reference — it SEARCHES WITHIN THE SMART FOLDER ITSELF!Â
The practical upshot of which is that it finds only the files that were found at the time the Smart Folder was created, and does not find anything newer because it's looking in the wrong place.Â
I'm hoping someone has a remedy for this, but I don't have high hopes considering the "Mac Quick Tips" podcasts from 2009 in which Smart Folders are demonstrated show this problem in the demo without realizing it.
I'm a recent switcher, and of course would never voluntarily go back to a PC. Love everything about the Mac for the most part.
One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.
In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.
I am struggling to reduce the size of some of my PDF , without loosing image quality. Â I have used Finder and it did reduce size , but the the picture quality was poor.Â
My connection is very slow (1Mb cable/DSL). How can I download a a large-size update when the download starts over every time the connection is cut? Can I use a download manager with Software Update?
i'm trying to get the file size displayed in the finder.i can right click on an individual file to 'get info' and find the size, but can the size be displayed routinely in the finder? i tried to 'view options' but 'size' and 'calculate size' are greyed out and cannot be checked.
I've set some share folders, from windows xp I can open the folders (even create files) and see the child folders but when I try to open them I get access denied.
I'm using snow leopard 10.6 on a mac mini, can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this?
Intego has it that snow leopard has some sort of inbuilt antivirus. Is that true? Read about it in Google news. I personally don't mind a scan of an downloaded app before launching.
Not sure if it is me or this is just the way Apple Mail works. Logic would assume that if you select a message in Apple Mail and that message is highlighted, not opened, and you click the From column so you can sort by that column Apple Mail would make sure that, when it is sorted, the highlighted message would still be in your view. I can get this to work sometimes and other times it does not, so it is starting to bother me. Is there something that I am missing...some step...or is this just the way it works.
I just got a new computer (MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard) and I would like to set up an automatic backup. I haven't trasferred any files in yet (they're all on my external HD), I wanted to see the best way to go about setting up my backup before moving the files in.
1. Backups of the documents, music, pictures is pretty straight forward, just a smart copy kind of thing that automatically looks for what files are new/modified on my computer and updates everything on the external. I'm not sure if I can do this with Automator, or if one of the commercial apps I saw on the app store (DropSync, DirectorySync, etc)Â
2. Movies, however, is a bit more complicated. I have around 600GB of movies/TV shows, and don't have room for them all on my computer hard drive (computer is 750GB, external is 1.5TB). In fact, I would like to keep very few of the tv shows on my computer, only really the last one or two seasons. For example, on my external HD has the folder 'Breaking Bad', and within that is 'Season 1', 'Season 2', 'Season 3' and 'Season 4'. However, on my computer I still have the 'Breaking Bad' folder, but only have the folder 'Season 4' since I don't need seasons 1-3 on my computer. When I add a file to 'Season 4' on my computer, I would like the 'Season 4' folder on the external to be updated when I perform a backup/sync. However, this does not mean that the 'Breaking Bad' folder on my computer will be synced to the one on the external, just this subfolder. Can this be done? I'm assuming I'd have to go through and specify paths for all my folders, but there aren't that many shows so that would be ok to do for each season. Also I don't think I would like to use Time Machine since I would like to be able to let friends/other computers take files off my external. I'm told with Time Machine it's not as simple as browsing the finder.
i am trying a way to sort the lines in a document in alphabetical order and i seem to be not finding this in TextWrangler even though i have to assume it is there.
Since I upgrated to Snow Leopard, everytime I put my Mac to sleep, Sumsung Smart Panel, which I use for my Laser Printer, will use 99% of the CPU after I start up my Mac again. This of course slows down all the other programs running.
A few minutes ago I realised that many of my (many dozens of) Smart Mailboxes in Apple Mail (v4.5) have become corrupted. That is, they all have the same name and have all lost their selection criteria -- putting each one in 'edit' mode, I see that each simply has three selection conditions, all of which are empty. I have a huge backstore of email and use smart mailboxes to organise it all (by client, by job number, etc) in conjunction with MailTags. The MailTags data seems to be intact, so I don't think that's the problem (besides, some of my smart mailboxes that do not draw upon any MailTags-generated meta data are also affected). Â
I have tried restoring the smartmailboxes.plist file from TimeMachine (from a date 2 weeks ago -- and to the best of my knowledge my smart mailboxes were all intact last night).
Info: Macbook Pro 15" (Feb 2008 model), Mac OS X (10.6.6), 2.6 GHz, 4GB RAM, 7200 rpm drive
My "smart" mailbox is showing messages from the "All Mail" folder of my IMAP account folder in addition to my Inbox. Is there a way to work around or stop this so I don't see duplicate messages in my smart mailbox?
I'll be getting an 80GB Air this week and I'm trying to gauge how much space I'll use up. Right now I have about 80GB of space used up on my hackintosh, but allot if it is junk I probably won't transfer over. Is there a way to look at all the files on my computer in order from largest to smallest?
Does anyone know of an easy way to search through Apple Mail to list all the messages with attachments and sort them by size? I was hoping to slim down my mail folder.
I am using a script that Jacques Rioux kindly helped me out with a couple days ago. I altered his script a little to complete a different task I needed to create a shortcut for. The script below first creates two folders (TIFF & JPEG) and then it sorts files with an extension .tif into the 'TIFF' folder and files with the extension .jpg into the folder named 'JPEG'. This works great but I would like the script to effect multiple folders. Can anyone help me add to the script so when you click it, a prompt will pop up allowing you to choose multiple folders to apply the script too? As of now it will only work on one folder at a time.
how to sort files and folders by date. As all this data is from the last 5 years naming them alphabetically (jan 09, feb 10 etc) was not working. create names numerically yy/mm/dd. While this works I have many folders, sub folders and sub sub folders and it gets somewhat confusing at times. Is there some alternate solution so that I can name folders by month and year alphbetically and force Finder Column view to show me the list in the way I want ( such as Jan09, Feb 09, march 10, april 10 etc)
I would like to Sort my Email in Apple Mail by Attachment Size. So I can delete my biggest attachments, so i can get more space. How do I sort by attachment size?
I can't figure this out. I'm trying to use smart folders to search for images within a certain folder and the sub-folders it contains.
The problem is, I can't figure out how to limit the search locations. The only options it provides are to search "this mac" or "(username)".
I've tried to use 'location' (set to match the folder name), but this brings up zero results.
Some instructions found by googling said to first use spotlight to select the folder I'd like to confine the search to before making the smart folders, but this doesn't work either.
I created several smart mailboxes and then created several smart mailbox folders. When I close mail and re-open, one smart mailbox folder remains and the others are gone, along with some but not all of my smart mailboxes.
I have Lion 10.7.4 on 2010 MBP. I use the mail program on the Mac. I have 20 Smart Mailboxes set up and each is working fine. Yeterday I set 5 Smart Mailbox Folders and placed each Samrt Mailbox in the appropriate Smart Mailbox Folder. At the end of the day i turned the MBP off. This morning when I opened mail all my Smart Mailbox Folders were gone. My Smart Mailboxes are still there.Â
I use apple mail for two separate accounts and would really like to be able to sort my messages into folders to make them easier to manage. I can't seem to be able to do so?
im partitioning my macbook pro i5 , i want to install bootcamp win7, hd space is 500gb. although it only needs 15gb to (5gb free) to split, what is the optimize size?
