Hardware :: Recovering Apple Hard Drive After SMART Status Failed?
Oct 30, 2010A while back I removed a Apple Hard Drive after I thought I had shut down the computer. Instead, it had just slept and so still had the power on. This caused the file system in the hard drive to fail, so I erased and rebuilt the file system on the Hard Drive. It worked fine for another day, and then failed. When I went to see if I could fix it, Disk Utility said the S.M.A.R.T status had failed and the send the hard drive to an apple specialist. Is there any way I could fix the Hard Drive myself?

Mar 12, 2012I have installed my hard drive from a previous but terminally I'll iMac that was running Snow Leopard into a Sata to USBÂ enclosure. This is displaying on the desktop of my new iMac running Lion as an external Hard drive,also system preferences sees it as a start up source.My question is , is it safe to restart into Snow leopard without causing a kernel panic and if it does boot will it be fast enough to use as it as a USB drive.

Aug 29, 2014I have a Macbook Pro . The hard disk failed smart disk and my laptop does not start any more. Is it ok if I replace the HDD with CGET or WD hard disk rather than the apple hard disk. the pros and cons of a non apple HDD.

Jun 14, 2012I want to run Disk utilities on my mac. Have done this before using system disk and holding C etc. Since upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard it no longer sees my system disk. Restart holding down C with system disk installed...and mac just boots-up normally! Ultimately I want to run the disk utility to check that the Hard Drive is healthy after install.

Dec 28, 2010However, my hard drive appears to be running fine - haven't noticed any degradation of performance since receiving the warnings two days ago. And HD is still running quiet (no strange mechanical noises I'm accustomed to hearing prior to a failure). Nevertheless, I'm installing a new HD tomorrow and recloning it from a backup external drive (operating from external until then).

I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

Feb 22, 2010I ran installer then went to disk utility and pushed disk repair. it ran and indicated in green that no repairs were necessary. i then went to startup disk and only the Diks and network startup showed up but no hard drive. i also open computer to make sure was not wet muddy due to leak in cooling system but all was dry

Aug 9, 2010My macbook pro's HD is in bad shape. S.M.A.R.T status is not ok. Sometimes the OS freezes, but so far this is the main problem I detected so far. Until now. I reinstalled the OS X - clean install - to see if things got better, but no luck. Although I think the system is more stable now, the machine is unable to restart or shut down as before. I have to hold the shut down button for a couple of seconds. With this in mind, is it dangerous for the machine to do frequent force shut-downs, or it just deteriorates the HD even more?

Maximum RAM installed; All apple software updates downloaded and permissions repaired after each download.Activity Monitor shows no obvious 'hogs'.Hard Drive (250GB) has almost 50GB free I am considering some sort of clean up using something like ONYX but feel that the hardware /software package should be almost self maintaining.15 years using Macs, since OS5 but not minded to look under the hood very often, since that is what brought me to Apple in the first place.Â

Sep 26, 2009I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard and one of the questions I'm struggling to find an answer to, is just how much RAM can I put in my iMac? I'm running a 3.06GHz core 2 duo iMac, 2008 (last model, without the new fancy graphics card). And, it currently runs 4Gb of RAM. With all of the Snow Leopard talk of your system running a virtually infinite amount of RAM, how much can I run???
Am I limited in some way by the motherboard in my iMac? Or can I "fill my boots!!"?

OS X :: HD Making Clicking Noise - Verified Smart Status
Jun 17, 2010I'm using a unibody MBP 15" that I had for about 2 years. After being awakened from sleep mode, the hard drive started to "click" for about 3 mins straight (I was on XP at the time, although that's probably irrelevant). I was so convinced that my hard drive was about to die, so I backed up my data. Then I ran a "repair disk" on disk utility to see what's up. There was something about "missing thread record" and "invalid volume file count," but eventually it was repaired.
It now says the drive is fine. So my question is, should I still expect the drive to fail on me pretty soon? I know what I heard, and it was pretty bad. It seemed like a hardware problem that can't simply be fixed by running a program. At the same time, I'm a bit puzzled by the SMART status saying the drive was verified. Is it SMART that unreliable?

Aug 21, 2010So I took my MBP into the apple store today and explained that my original hard drive was showing as failing after my two momentus xt drives were apparently failing as well. He said it was really strange and hooked up the drive to their external interface and low and behold there was no errors on the drive. He said it's most likely being caused by IO errors due to a bad SATA cable or possibly logic board. We had my MBP sent in for testing. So basically if you see SMART failing status it may not be the drive after all.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Installation Keeps Failing
Dec 23, 2009So I've only had my macbook pro aluminum body for about 4 months and after downloading the new system update, my laptopl just started acting weird and then it would just keep freezing with the pinwheel for extended periods of time. I've decided to verify and repair the disc, but to no avail, it didn't help. So, I backed up files in an external hard drive and erased my disc. However, after repeating to reinstall Snow Leopard at least 10 times, it keeps on telling me that it has failed to copy supported files. If I eject my installation DVD, it will just show up with a gray screen that has a folder and a question mark on it. I'm not sure what to do. I feel like I should take it over to an Apple store to consult with a Genius...but it is far from where I live. Any easy step to step advice on what I should do?

Sep 18, 2009my imac is running snow leopard i usually will click the menu bar and select sleep. i know it is still on because the fan is still running. normally it will wake back up with push on the the keyboard, occasionally it will not wake up, so my next resort is to press the power button once sometimes this will work, if not i am forced to hold the power button and restart it, when it turns on a message appears and says "You shut down your computer because of a problem, would you like to send it to apple". any advice because this is becoming quite annoying

Feb 1, 2012My late 2010 iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 12gb of ram is running very slow. It takes a very long for the computer to boot with the desktop taking ages to fully load. Applications are also taking an unholy amount of time to load with the spinning wheel always appearing through out use, and they often crash or don't respond and close during use. I'm talking applications like Word taking 3 minutes to load and getting the spinning wheel when font size is tried to be changed and crashing and closing if a large volume of text is attempted to be pasted into a document.The computer is also failing to shut down properly just staying on a blue screen. I recently wiped and completed a fresh install however the issues came back.

May 29, 2010I just installed last night the 1TB WD Scorpio Blue without a problem in a 2010 MBP 13", but seem to be having some issues now. Im showing the drive is shown w/red text and failing the SMART status in the disk utility. It showed verified when I installed it last night and reinstalled OS X, but now this. I have also been getting some beachballs, but does seem to be running fine now. Is this a sign of just a bad drive, or is it normal for a non-apple drive to fail the smart status check?

Since then it is recognized for a short period of time when I connect it, then it disappears. I replaced it with a WD My Book. It worked perfectly for a month and now it has shut down. IMac :: System Freezes And Running Very Slow With Snow Leopard
Mar 25, 2010I have a 20" iMac mid 2007 2.4Ghz, 320GB, 2Gb machine running Snow Leopard. Today I turned it on and it was running fine. But around three hours of using it suddenly froze. I had to force the turn off using the power button. When i turned it back on it took about 4 mins to get to the login screen. Once I logged in the spinning wheel came up and the only think that loaded was the Spotlight sign. This kept happening until about the third time of turning it off and on. When it finally completed login. But it is now extremely slow and it just about freezes when I open more than one application.
