I use apple mail for two separate accounts and would really like to be able to sort my messages into folders to make them easier to manage. I can't seem to be able to do so?

how to sort files and folders by date. As all this data is from the last 5 years naming them alphabetically (jan 09, feb 10 etc) was not working. create names numerically yy/mm/dd. While this works I have many folders, sub folders and sub sub folders and it gets somewhat confusing at times. Is there some alternate solution so that I can name folders by month and year alphbetically and force Finder Column view to show me the list in the way I want ( such as Jan09, Feb 09, march 10, april 10 etc)

Is it possible to sort all the messages in my inbox by unread status and then by date?Â
That is, I will have all of my unread emails at the top, but then the first read email will be my most recently received one?Â
At the moment, sorting by unread status means that the top read emails are the ones that have been forwarded/replied to, and then the most recently dated ones.Â

I bought a 1TB external HDD when I got my mac back in August. I use it for Time Machine and I store all my songs that I use for DJ/karaoke. When I first got it and I had it plugged in, I could search a lot easier than I can now. It would search just like you can when searching your internal drive and type the file name in and it begins narrowing it down. Now for some reason it will not do that, and every time I need to find a song on the drive out of thousands, I have to go in there manually and hunt it down. Anyone know of how to adjust the search settings on my external drive so I can get it working like it was at first?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 in a classroom. Hard drive has two partitions, one for OS and apps, the other for student's files. Computers are bind to the Active Directory. Unfortunately, local home folders are on the boot parition. Over a time when apps FCP and Avid are frequently used, the boot partition gets filled with files and finally it's full. With zero kb available, users cannot even login anymore. Manually deleting files by admin is cumbersome and time-consuming task.Â
I'm looking for a way to keep /Users folder clean. Putting user's home folders to server is not an option, because of latency issues etc. Unfortunately the local home folder is the default saving place when user issues the Save As command. I've tried to tinker with the User Template to lock the Documents folder but apps like Microsoft Word and Final Cut Pro go crazy when they cannot save there. Forwarding /Users to other partition does not solve the problem, it just moves the problem to another place. Logout Hook to automatically purging the files could be an solution, but there's always one hapless soul who saves his or hers files to wrong place and loses them. Or maybe a script which looks at the modfication date and deletes old files.Â

I've got a bunch of client folders and subfolders (labels on gmail). I'm trying to switch to mac in the office and set up an imap account. In the last hour searching the archives here, the subfolders in the account have appeared, disappeared, back and forth. Right now they're gone. They have never had any of the messages in them on the mac. There is no little triangle to turn.
Here's what I have done so far:
- set the folders to show in IMAP
- verified the folders/labels and their contents are on the server, my pc, my iphone
- completely deleted and recreated the account in Mail and System Preferences 3 times
- they also don't show in the [Gmail] folder down below
- let it completely sync overnight last night (problem existed yesterday too)

I'm a recent switcher, and of course would never voluntarily go back to a PC. Love everything about the Mac for the most part.
One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.
In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.
I would prefer seeing all my folders at the top.
Is there a setting that controls this?
I am using a script that Jacques Rioux kindly helped me out with a couple days ago. I altered his script a little to complete a different task I needed to create a shortcut for. The script below first creates two folders (TIFF & JPEG) and then it sorts files with an extension .tif into the 'TIFF' folder and files with the extension .jpg into the folder named 'JPEG'. This works great but I would like the script to effect multiple folders. Can anyone help me add to the script so when you click it, a prompt will pop up allowing you to choose multiple folders to apply the script too? As of now it will only work on one folder at a time.

I wish to have the folder show all documents bigger than a certain size (ie. video) appear in the folder. My next question, is can I then drag to the Trash from that folder and know that they're deleted from their original location. I assume appearing in a smart folder is like an alias, its not reall copied to this new location.Â

Apps never open in either Cmd1 version (alphabetical) or cmd2 (sorted by apps), it uses some third option where sometimes your window is at the very last of the list.
Is there anyway to force sort by app or alphabetical?
I've only recently added release years to all my albums and now I sort by album by year, which is great. However, I'd like to make some smart playlists based on decades, and this is a problem for anything on some sort of anthology or greatest hits collection. For example, the Barenaked Ladies greatest hits CD was released in 2001.
If I tag the whole album as 2001, it sorts correctly, but the individual tracks from the 90's won't show up in the 90's smart playlist. The other option I can think of is to tag each individual track with the correct year, but then the album stops appearing in the right place chronologically within the BNL albums, since iTunes no longer knows it was released in 2001.
So my question is this: is there some way to do a sort of "Sort Year" or "Album Year" similar to "Sort Artist" or "Album Year"?
And while I'm at it, I'm sure there's no way, but it seems like it'd be cool to somehow tie a track to two different albums. Previously, if I had a greatest hits and some original albums, I would erase any duplicates from the greatest hits and only keep them on the original album. However, since the release of iTunes 8 I use a more album-based approach to my music. I use grid view with shuffle off by default, and often just click "Play Album". But if I do that for a greatest hits comp, it of course won't play the tracks that I've deleted from it. So I have to keep two copies of the same recording for two different albums. It'd be cool if there was some way to tie one track to both albums to avoid dupes. But again, I'm pretty sure this'll never happen.
I would prefer the backup to run when I am not working on the computer (instead of every hour). Can the Time Machine Scheduler be trusted or is there another option to manage the backup schedule?

So I create a whole bunch of folders in Mail. Everything is fine. I'm moving and organizing things. Then suddenly I get this pop-up message:
The message "Job" could not be moved to the mailbox "Jobs — On My Mac"
I can read it. Why wouldn't it move?
Another time I couldn't move it, it said this and the message could not be read. This is displayed in the message body when the title is highlighted:
The message from Robin [URL] concerning "Your work" has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
Its POP email. I have no idea what to even check.
Using Messages I sent a text to my wife's iPhone 4S. It starts a new screen. How do I send a message so it just appends that message to all the others she's been getting from me?

Okay, so I check my GMail account 3 places, through the web-based client, my iPhone (IMAP) and Mail (IMAP). Everything works perfectly except for the fact that when I read an email on my phone or the web-based client, the message stays as unread on the Mail app on my MBP.
The read message syncing works perfectly between the iPhone and web (i.e., if I read an unread message via the web it will be marked as read on the phone the next time the phone talks to the server and vice versa). However, it just doesn't work like this on the Mail app on my computer. If I read a message on the iPhone the message will stay marked as unread on the Mail app until I click on it.
I am on the latest 10.10.1 Yosemite, but this problem has happened to me on previous operating systems. On my dock I have a red bubble that says I have unread messages waiting. When I go to messages, I have no unread items. I even went as far and deleted every single conversation. The bubble went away but returned quickly. Â

I've read many times people want to make folders appear at the top of a list in Finder like they are represented in Windows explorer. I found an article on Macworld that tells you how to do this.
I remember doing this over a year ago on my G4 Powerbook and it working. But on my Intel MacBook Pro, I can't locate the file they are referring to in the article. where this file was moved to or how to access this thing on the Intel machines?

I used MobileMe but am being forced to iCloud. I used MobileMe to store documents but in iCloud it doesn't seem that one can create folders in which to put documents; I can only upload documents to "Pages" tab and sort them by name. Also, the support seems to indicate I should be able to upload PDF but when I try it says that PDF is not supported.

View 2 Replies View Relatedso i have been using pc all my life, but now i have a new macbook and ive been downloading a lot of things. the other day an error popped up and said i was running low on disk space... ive been lazy about "reconfiguring my external hard drive for my mac" like the apple employee told me i needed to do, but i decided i should finally do it to free up space on my computer.
i have a seagate external hard drive and i plugged it into my computer and erased everything on it so i could start using it with time machine. after it started backing everything up an error popped up saying that i only have 2.2 MB available.... so on my system preferences i reconfirmed that it says 2.2 MB of 232.9 GB available. this doesnt make any sense because i just wiped my external drive, plus i didnt have much on it to begin with.
so i guess my question is, how do i make that space available?
also, i mainly wanted to back up all of my documents, music, and movies so that i could delete some movies and documents from my computer that i dont need every day and make space for more, but then when i plug my ext hard drive back in to my computer, wont it just mirror my computer with time machine and defeat the purpose of storing things on it because they will just be deleted?
i know im lame, but im really trying to get used to my mac which i know is way easier than im making it out to be.
Is there any way to make the Messages app show names and pictures by default in groups? It's kind of annoying to have to set that every time. I'm hoping Yosemite may add this option.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a lot of PDF and other files in general that I would like to keep sorted by date. Normally in finder options I would sort them by date but the problem is that the bulk of them were added to my laptop by scanning, e mail hard drives so the creation dates of these files is not necessarily the same date as these statements. I tried naming theses files by date e.g. 10/02/12 etc but obviously this did not work as numbers are recognised in sequence and not by calender.

I am using OSX Snow Leopard. It's really great, but the folders and items within them are a total mess. When I copy or move anything to a folder, all the other icons move and icons even appear on top of one and other. Please is there any way to stop this - is there an app or something that will make the folders as tidy looking as they are on Windows? And please leave out all the Mac/Windows fanboy stuff - I have no problems with either OS.
