OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Sort Files And Folders By Date

Jul 6, 2012

how to sort files and folders by date. As all this data is from the last 5 years naming them alphabetically (jan 09, feb 10 etc) was not working. create names numerically yy/mm/dd. While this works I have many folders, sub folders and sub sub folders and it gets somewhat confusing at times. Is there some alternate solution so that I can name folders by month and year alphbetically and force Finder Column view to show me the list in the way I want ( such as Jan09, Feb 09, march 10, april 10 etc)

OS X :: How To Batch Unlock Numerous Files Within Subfolders/folders/directory?

Mar 14, 2008

Problem:

I have a folder with numerous subfolders, each containing numerous files that i would like to batch unlock (vs tediously unlocking each individual folder).

failed attempts involve:

- tried the following terminal action: sudo chflags -R nouchg ( as suggested on this website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106237) but it did not work.

I did not try the other suggestions on the website because it started getting really complicated and i was afraid to do something that may cause damage/delete my files

- tried unlocking the folders and subfolders, however each individual file within the corresponding folder/subfolders remained locked

Partial but suboptimal solutions tried:
- i found a partial but not optimal solution to my problem on this site:

however, the option-command-I will only allow me to unlock files each subfolder at a time (as i need to actually highlight the files themselves).

is there a way where i could just unlock all the folder/subfolders/files within an entire directory in one fell swoop?

My system:

- the new MBP running Mac OS X 10.5.2

i am a new mac user and i apologize in advance if there is some simple solution to this problem that i have yet failed to discover,

OS X :: Using Terminal To Create Md5 Of Folders & Subfolders?

Jun 23, 2010

I can't find a third party app to create a MD5 checksum of folders and subfolders. The closest I got was checksum+, but the programs doesn't handle large folders; it freezes.

So I would like to go into Terminal and do it manually. Can someone share the command line to create:

a MD5 checksum of a folder and its subfolders and output it to a txt file.

a way then to use that outputted text file for file verification. My initial thinking is that I would have to create another MD5 checksum of the copied folder and then use a difference type command to compare the text files?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Sort Scanned PDF Files

Jun 23, 2012

I have a lot of PDF and other files in general that I would like to keep sorted by date. Normally in finder options I would sort them by date but the problem is that the bulk of them were added to my laptop by scanning, e mail hard drives so the creation dates of these files is not necessarily the same date as these statements. I tried naming theses files by date e.g. 10/02/12 etc but obviously this did not work as numbers are recognised in sequence and not by calender.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Any Way To Sort Files In Finder First By Kind Then By Name?

Apr 14, 2012

Is there any way to sort files in my finder first by kind (folders, pdfs, jpegs, docxs, etc.) and then by name? Right now I can only sort by one or the other. If I sort by kind, the files are grouped according to kind, but the names are mixed up. If I sort by name, all file types and folders are sorted according to name. I like the column view because directory structure can be seen easily.

OS X :: How To Sort Folders At Top Of File View In Finder

Jul 30, 2009

I'm a recent switcher, and of course would never voluntarily go back to a PC. Love everything about the Mac for the most part.

One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.

In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.

I would prefer seeing all my folders at the top.

Is there a setting that controls this?

OS X Technologies :: Create Folders And Sort Applescript?

Mar 15, 2012

I am using a script that Jacques Rioux kindly helped me out with a couple days ago. I altered his script a little to complete a different task I needed to create a shortcut for. The script below first creates two folders (TIFF & JPEG) and then it sorts files with an extension .tif into the 'TIFF' folder and files with the extension .jpg into the folder named 'JPEG'. This works great but I would like the script to effect multiple folders. Can anyone help me add to the script so when you click it, a prompt will pop up allowing you to choose multiple folders to apply the script too? As of now it will only work on one folder at a time.

OS X :: Saving Files Into Subfolders With Leopard?

Mar 18, 2008

In mail, i can only save to Downloads or a folder on the same level. It won't let me choose a subfolder or create a folder like i could before. Same thing when i try to save a file. When i'm using Adobe CS3 applications i swich to the adobe dialog boxes but this seems so stupid.

This is a HUGE time waster for me. I deal with a projects that involve a great quantity of files that need a lot of folder organization. Is this something to do with stacks? Am i being required to think differently?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Sort By File Size In Smart Folders?

Feb 18, 2012

The Apple info says use pop-up menus to select search criteria, but where is that? I wish to have the folder show all documents bigger than a certain size (ie. video) appear in the folder. My next question, is can I then drag to the Trash from that folder and know that they're deleted from their original location. I assume appearing in a smart folder is like an alias, its not reall copied to this new location.

OS X Yosemite :: Why Can't Open Subfolders When Dragging And Holding Files

Dec 9, 2014

When I drag-and-hold a file to a folder with the purpose of placing it into one of its subfolders, I can't go past the first folder: in other words, unlike Mavericks, where I could drag the file and open one folder after the other until I could just release my file into the final destination, since I installed Yosemite I can't do it any longer and when I place the dragged file over a subfolder all I see is a "+" sign, but the folder won't open. Is there a way to restore that functionality?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Searching Files Within Folders

May 15, 2012

if i am in the r&b albums directory, if i type 'usher' in the top right search box, surely it would make sense to only search the directory i am in (r&b albums) and any sub directories within that (2008 folder for example), like windows explorer does? why does it do a system wide search? i can do that in spotlight if i wanted to.I only want to find the results in that folder and any sub folders contained within it. basically whatever folder i am in, i want that to be the ceiling folder, i dont want the search results to go beyond that. is this possible? bascially i want it to do the search like windows explorer does. and the first person that tells me that this is how macs work and if i dont like it go back to windows is gonna get a virtual punch in the face!

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Folders Turned Into Exe Files?

May 29, 2012

I don't know what happened to my Mac today, i assumed it's a virus but the strange here is that virus is only affect Windows OS. The story is, I have a friend, she borrowed my camera, as she returned it, i was on boot camp and was using Windows for gaminng, i plugged my camera and delete photos that my friend has taken. I noticed nothing strange and i didn't have any Anti-virus program on Windows. Until i login to my Mac, i see all of the folders on my Macintosh HD drive is now exe files. I can still access these folders by using the "Go" option on the Menu Bar. I downloaded Kaspersky and scan for viruses, it showed that the drive is infected with Worm.Win32.Autorun.gvy. If i try to delete the file, it also delete the whole Folder which causes my Mac to crash and need to restart.

I have a folder in my documents folder that I would like to clean up. It contains many folders and sub-folders (directories and sub-directories) in a many layers deep arrangement. I would like to delete only the files while preserving the folders and sub-folders (makes backing up and synchronising a LOT easier).

I am not using Time machine. (If it is easier to just delete the main folder and then copy back just the folders from the back-up drive.)

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can't Delete Files/folders From External Drive

Apr 25, 2012

I have a couple of FW drives hooked up to my iMac and I just discovered I can't trash anything from them. Actually, ever since upgrading to Lion I've been having all sorts of permission issues, but that's another discussion. In this case I've gone to the info windows for these drives and I have only read premission and I can't seem to change it. I've done all the usual things to do so but it remains stuck on "read only." I'm regularly repairing permissions so I don't see that working, tho I haven't tried trashing anything from these drives in a while so I don't know how long it's been this way.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Changes Views When Deleting Files / Folders?

May 23, 2012

In Snow Leopard: I open a Finder window in column view that has a long list of content, scroll down to the bottom of the column and delete a file/folder. The file/folder disappears but the rest of the window content is unchanged. IE: if my view showed me R S T U V and I delete T, my view would be R S U V.  In Lion, I do exactly the same thing and the Finder jumps to the top of the column. IE: When I delete T, my window jumps to A B C D E instead of staying focused on R S U V.I've got a new Mac Mini with the 2.7 Ghz i7 upgrade... but otherwise stock. Currently running 10.7.4.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Can't Hide Folders And Files That Are Usually Hidden

Sep 8, 2014

This past weekend I transferred my OS and apps to a newly installed SSD drive.

During the process I had to move some files around in order to get The OS and Apps on the SSD.

I used a technique that utilizes the Terminal and the chflags command.

My issue is now I can not hide the files and folders that are usually hidden.

I can't remember the exact method I used to unhide hidden folders and files. I can't even find a reference to it in my web browsers history.I have searched on the web for solutions along these lines: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean FALSE ; killall Finderchflags hidden sudo chflags hidden

But none of these approaches have worked. I have downloaded Onyx, TinkerTool and Show Hide Invisible Files.

I have used them as best I understand to hide the normally hidden files and folders, but nothing has worked.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Saving Files Received As Email Attachment In Folders

Apr 27, 2012

When I want to save a file that somebody has attached to an email, I open the file - but I can only save a version (which I presume saves it back to the email). So I create a duplicate, and choose Save. In Save all I can see of my documents are the most recently used folders - and I can't see any subfolders. Frequently the folder that I want to save in isn't shown - and I can't find any way of revealing it. And if it is shown, I can't see any of the sub folders - so I have to go through the performance of saving it in one place and then opening the folders in Finder and moving it around - a ridiculously long winded task.
