OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Never Ending Secure Erase
Feb 29, 2012
About a week ago I enabled FV1. Overnight, the encryption and deletion of the original folder appeared to complete. However, I now have a never ending 'Secure Erase' process showing up in Activity monitor. By never-ending, I mean its always there, although as far as I can tell the secure erase process finished days ago (and surely, on 54GB home folder, it shouldn't take this long anyway). In any case, Finder shows my disk space as freed already.I'm not experiencing any lag in the system, no increased fan speed or temp; in fact, the only way I know its happening is because it
i. appears in AM and Top
ii. it strips the life out of my battery when I'm not on AC Power.
I've tried re-booting to no effect. I've even tried killing the process but it just restarts itself. In Finder from within Snow Leopard, I see two home folder images. There is one with a home icon that appears to be an alias. 'Get Info' says it has 0MB size. There is another 'no access' folder whose size is indeterminate, as Finder never completes the 'Calculating' process. However, looking at these same two folders from Lion (on another partition), the folder with the home icon shows up as a 54GB sparse bundle. The folder with no access remains inaccessible and of indeterminate size. The issue is not critical. If the worst comes to the worst I can wipe this disk and re-install from a clone, but I'd rather find a better solution, if possible.

I'm changing my primary e-mail from hotmail to aim after it recently got hacked, when I try to configure my aim in Mail it says "Mail cannot send your password securely to the server." and then it gives me the choice to continue without the password being secure which would put it at risk, or setup manually. After I set it up manually and enable Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) it gives me the same message as before but this time when i choose setup manually and enable SSL again, it works. How do I know if my password is secure??

I would like to ask on how I can connect securely to my iMac at home from my MBP when I'm travelling. I have subscribed to MobileMe, unfortunately, it is not always possible to connect using MobileMe due to technical issues (Many would have agreed that MobileMe are not reliable at times).
What I would like to achieve is the following:
1) Install either a VPN and/or SSH server in my iMac at home
2) Enable access not only my iMac but also my home network and internet connection from my home.
2) Be able to browse using my iMac or AEBS in my home network from my MBP in a secure way (similar to proxy).
I understand that I can setup SSH server and do some port forwarding with it. I need more details or tutorial on this, if you have any link that would be appreicated. Basically, I understand the idea but this would be impractical as I need to setup a lot of forwarding (one forwarding for each service).
So VPN solution may be cleaner in a way. I checked that OpenVPN.net doesn't support newer OSX anymore. Any idea how to do this? I have identified an OpenVPN client that can be used but not the server portion.

So I may have one of the Seagate hard drives that are failing badly. Haven't heard back from Seagate to see if my drive and firmware is bad, but since I just bought the drive, I'm thinking of returning it.I'm in the middle of a 7 Pass Secure erase on it (1TB). Do people feel comfortable returning a drive after doing that erase? Or should I just forget about it and destroy the drive and chalk it up to a loss?

I am running Lion on a fairly new iMac 21.5 (bought it last September). Apparently I have changed the Empty Trash method to Secure Erase. I really do not need this nor do I want it as it takes forever to empty the trash. How can I get back to the old method of just emptying the trash?

I'm setting up Safari for a child, and have Parental Controls enabled and am customizing the list of sites that can be visited. I'm allowing [URL] and have multiple http and https Netflix URL's allowed. However, when I test accessing this site, Safari gives an error stating that it cannot establish a "secure connection". The same computer, with a different account, can access the same URL without the error. My assumption would be that since I specifically allowed several [URL] URL's, that this would work just fine. By granting specific access, you are bypassing Parental Controls in a controlled way.

I have a macbook running leopard and am upgrading to snow leopard. I have a back up from leopard on an external hard drive and I would like to completely wipe my computer, start fresh. However, I no longer have the leopard install disc but I do have the old tiger install disc. I am thinking to revert to tiger to restore the computer's settings and then upgrade to snow leopard. Will I still be able to restore select items from my Leopard back up?

I'm trying to erase my hard drive to sell my MacBook and well I used the drop in disk to help with this. I dont have the gray disks that came with my computer. Any who I ran it erase and reinstall the os and at the last second it failed to install. Now when I start my computer with the disk it'll try to down load the os and it says that I don't have an OS X version 10.4 or higher on my computer. So basically I don't have a operating system on my MacBook. It's empty. It is a white 13 inch MacBook.

I use three Macs. This is an IMac 24 on Leopard. But the problem also happens on the other Macs, one of which is on Tiger and the other Snow Leopard. I repeatedly get a Mail propt to give my password. If I give it or if I just hit "cancell" the problem continues. If I hit cancel and immediately hit "get mail," everything works. I should also note that this has been happening the last three weeks. Before that I had no trouble, but earlier still I had this same problem. I did nothing to cause it to go away. Our Ipads have no difficulty.

I experienced what I believe was a crash so after various attempts at doing a time machine restore, I performed an erase of the HDD and have been trying to install snow leopard from a disk I bought from the Apple store. I am not sure if the disk is the whole OS X or not as it was purchased to upgrade from the OS X that was on the machine. I am hoping to do a time machine backup to get my old programmes/software back afterwards but in the meantime just cannot seem to get snow leopard on my iMac.

I also did a complete shut down and boot up, but the error persists.

I have a MacBook Pro and am going to sell it to upgrade to one of the newer MacBook Pro's. What is the best way to securely erase it before selling it? I have a lot of work data that I don't want to chance anyone being able to recover. In the past I had a windows program which conformed to DOD security for erasing. Is there anything like that I can do to securely erase my mac hard drive?

I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.
Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB
What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?

For some strange reason, my early 2008 Mac Pro keeps making hard-drive access sounds / head-moving sounds. It's been doing it non stop for 3 days now. The sounds are short, about 3 per second, about as fast as you would read this: "grind grind grind" then a short half-second pause, then repeat. Sometimes there's a longer 1-2 second delay. But it almost always seems like triplets, "grind grind grind"
I have no apps or background processes running that I've been able to discover. I've checked startup items, launch agents, and launch daemons.
I've checked Activity monitor but I see nothing unusual, and no correlation with any cpu activity.
I've checked disk utility and SMART is verified, permissions are repaired, and the disk is verified to be "OK."
I've tried fs_usage, lsof, and top, and see no correlation to anything.
I'm clearly missing something and am hoping someone can point out what it is? What else can I do to determine what the disk activity is doing? Are there any apps or other UNIX commands to check? Or is my drive dying?

I want to start afresh on my HD, i.e. reinstall from original disks and use Disk Utility to secure erase (via Erase & Install).I've read articles about pros and cons + how to do it. So I think I know how to do everything. However, from my reading I gather that Zero Erase is a single pass random erase whereas 7 Pass is secure erase (and there is a 3 Pass secure erase option nowadays)? That got me wondering - does 7 Pass secure erase make 7 x single passes over the entire disk?If it does, then when the blue bar has extended a bit over a third of the way across the progress monitor (that little bar that indicates time left) it should have made 3 passes, which would be equivalent to 3 pass secure erase? Is that an option? Is it possible to stop part way through an erase (which is part of E & I)? My original disks 1 and 2 have OS X 10.4, with OS X 10.5 included as complimentary 3rd disk (because OS X 10.5 was just released at that time).I gather I need to erase with disk 1, then install disks 1 + 2, then install OS X 10.5.
