OS X :: VPN / SSH Server And Secure Remote Access For Snow Leopard

Feb 3, 2010

I would like to ask on how I can connect securely to my iMac at home from my MBP when I'm travelling. I have subscribed to MobileMe, unfortunately, it is not always possible to connect using MobileMe due to technical issues (Many would have agreed that MobileMe are not reliable at times).

What I would like to achieve is the following:

1) Install either a VPN and/or SSH server in my iMac at home

2) Enable access not only my iMac but also my home network and internet connection from my home.

2) Be able to browse using my iMac or AEBS in my home network from my MBP in a secure way (similar to proxy).

I understand that I can setup SSH server and do some port forwarding with it. I need more details or tutorial on this, if you have any link that would be appreicated. Basically, I understand the idea but this would be impractical as I need to setup a lot of forwarding (one forwarding for each service).

So VPN solution may be cleaner in a way. I checked that OpenVPN.net doesn't support newer OSX anymore. Any idea how to do this? I have identified an OpenVPN client that can be used but not the server portion.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Connecting To A Remote Server

Mar 21, 2012

I am tryiing to connect to a remote desktop servere which , I think, is Windows based.  I know the IP address which, for example, is 123.45.67.891:2345

When I type this into the "connect remote server" (Finder>Go> Connect remote server) Apple adds a prefix   afp://  .   In the "missing manual" book by David Pogue he suggests the prefix ought be   smb://  for a windows server.  Either way, a dialogue box informs me that attempt has failed whem I try to connect

Applications :: Remote Desktop Server Equiv For OSX Snow Leopard?

Dec 15, 2010

Just had my 3 yrs old Mac Mini decomission and set aside in the living hall as a media server recently. While I use the mini primary to watch movies, in which it does great with XBMC, I would like to have the ability to Remote Login (GUI) into the mini WHILE my wife is watching her fav movie CONCURRENTLY without any disturbance. I guess this a old topic i'm revisiting here. I've been googling around and searching this forum, but yet till now, the closest solution I've came to is having OSXvnc (Vine Server) running along with fast using switching, plus some VNC client etc. The worst part of this approach is, each remote user have to log into the physical machine for fast user switching. This is just soooo dodgy as compare to the windoze variant. I'm posting to see, if anyone have a better solution that:

1. each remote user dun have to physically login first
2. I can have concurrent session running (either remote, or local-wife watching movie)

Does the Mac OSX SL Server have something to offer to this problem? And also, I've discovered that The Apple Remote Desktop is more for a network administrator sort of app, totally not related to allowing multiple concurent remote GUI Sessions.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Access WebDAV In Browser

Mar 26, 2012

I am trying to set up a webserver in order for others to access certain files via HTTP. I've turned on the Web Server and activited WebDAV. I'm unsure of what to do next.I am able to access the directory /Library/WebServer/Documents when I logon to the server through the Finder window. That's as far as I've gotten. But, ideally, I would like someone to be able to go to the URLs....to get to the target directory (or target file) "Example", and have it prompt the user for a name/password for authenticaion. I experimented with creating a realm, and having it point to a folder I created (e.g. Folder = /Library/ WebServer/ Documents/ Example), and giving myself access. I am unclear what the URL is for that folder. Going to urls... gives me a 404 error: Object not found.

I also tried pointing my realm to a location instead of a folder (e.g. Location = /Example). Now when I go to http://ourservername.com/Example, I get a 403: Access Forbidden error. But I'm unclear how to set access to the location, and where that would be actually located on my server (how can I add files to the Example directory?).

Mac Mini :: Creating FTP Server With Remote Access?

Aug 15, 2010

My goal is to by a mac mini that will run 24/7 it will be connected to about 5TB's of storage that will have all my personal data on it. My goal is to create an FTP server that will host all these files that I can access remotely and let friends and family access it. I pretty much have it all sorted out I just wanted to check with some people on here. To run it I will be using a program called PureFTPd to manage the server and I can create accounts and manage them all through this application. Does anyone have a better way for me to do this or an alternate application that is better, And also I have connected to my mac book pro remotely using the built in FTP feature and PureFTP so yer, Does anyone else have a better idea for me running a server?

Hardware :: Manually Configure Airport Extreme For HP Mediasmart Server Remote Access?

Dec 28, 2009

I have an HP EX490 Mediasmart Server that I'm trying to get Remote Access to work with my Airport Extreme (N/Giga version). Unfortunately HP doesn't recommend the Airport Extreme for Remote Access use since it doesn't support UPnP. I followed one guy's steps to manually configure the port forwarding to get Remote Access to work, based upon comments it works for some and doesn't work for others. I've provided screenshots that match his instructions, and I was wondering if anyone has had luck and are there extra steps since I have the latest firmware on my Airport Extreme? I really don't feel like buying another wireless router if possible, but if I need to, any recommendations that has a USB port so I can print wireless with my current printer?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Never Ending Secure Erase

Feb 29, 2012

About a week ago I enabled FV1. Overnight, the encryption and deletion of the original folder appeared to complete. However, I now have a never ending 'Secure Erase' process showing up in Activity monitor. By never-ending, I mean its always there, although as far as I can tell the secure erase process finished days ago (and surely, on 54GB home folder, it shouldn't take this long anyway). In any case, Finder shows my disk space as freed already.I'm not experiencing any lag in the system, no increased fan speed or temp; in fact, the only way I know its happening is because it

i. appears in AM and Top

ii. it strips the life out of my battery when I'm not on AC Power.

I've tried re-booting to no effect. I've even tried killing the process but it just restarts itself. In Finder from within Snow Leopard, I see two home folder images. There is one with a home icon that appears to be an alias. 'Get Info' says it has 0MB size. There is another 'no access' folder whose size is indeterminate, as Finder never completes the 'Calculating' process. However, looking at these same two folders from Lion (on another partition), the folder with the home icon shows up as a 54GB sparse bundle. The folder with no access remains inaccessible and of indeterminate size. The issue is not critical. If the worst comes to the worst I can wipe this disk and re-install from a clone, but I'd rather find a better solution, if possible.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Safari, Secure Connection To Sites And Parental Control?

Mar 22, 2012

I'm setting up Safari for a child, and have Parental Controls enabled and am customizing the list of sites that can be visited. I'm allowing [URL] and have multiple http and https Netflix URL's allowed. However, when I test accessing this site, Safari gives an error stating that it cannot establish a "secure connection". The same computer, with a different account, can access the same URL without the error. My assumption would be that since I specifically allowed several [URL] URL's, that this would work just fine. By granting specific access, you are bypassing Parental Controls in a controlled way.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: ICal Server: Free/Busy And/or Availability Not Working?

Jun 14, 2012

I run 10.6.8 server in a VM with Parallels Server for Mac. Lithium pinged me early Monday morning to tell me that my calendar server wasn't reachable. I found it had kernel panicked. After resetting it and verifying the directory structure and permissions, it booted fine. But availability or free/busy wasn't working for all users! The events were all there. Invites could be sent and received but when a user checks for availability when creating events. they see the daily work hours grayed out but not anything corresponding to a scheduling conflict.

Things I have Tried:

- bounced ical server

- Rebooted the server

- checked the owners and permissions for the data store hierarchy. (_calendar:_calendar 750)

- checked for xattrs on .ics files in several calendars

- deleted .db.sqlite for several users in several dir in their calendar stores

- in the past I have found that some iTIP invitations seem to get "stuck' causing problems with an individual users free/busy and deleting the inbox resolves this so I deleted several inboxes

-I moved a copy of the data store to a test server and pointed several clients at it.

The issue persisted in all of these cases without any change in behavior with one exception; somewhere (i lost track of where) during this process users also lost their delegation preferences. I'd love to find out how and where that is stored so that it can be restored in the future. It seems pretty fragile...

I found one way to restore the functionality; copying a users __uid__/<GUID>/calendar out. . Moving all the folders under <GUID> out of the way and dropping the .ics files into ical with their account configured in that instance. Although this worked for selected users, I have many, many users and calendars so this solution would be suboptimal.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Replacing A Hard Drive Of RAID 5 System Just Ruined OS X 10.6.8 Server?

Jul 2, 2012

My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...

1. I shut down the system

2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive

3. tried start the machine again. Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...

4. So I put back the degraded drive...

5. The machine still won't start...

6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic...

7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).

8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic...

Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

OS :: Inside Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server Apple's Server Strategy?

Oct 14, 2009

Years before Mac OS X 10.0 was first released in 2001, Apple launched Mac OS X Server, targeting its newly acquired Unix-based operating system technology at the education and workgroup server market. Apple has struggled ever since to find a broad server strategy that works. The solution may be as obvious as the iPhone App Store. Mac OS X Server has remained firmly stuck in the background even as Mac OS X has blossomed. Over the last decade of Mac OS X's development, Apple transformed its legacy Mac operating system from an outdated relic stuck in maintenance mode throughout most of the 90s into a highly regarded system that gets as much or more respect from industry critics as any other desktop operating system.Apple accomplished something that many others in the industry failed to do: marry the power and familiarity of Unix with accessible ease of use in a commercially successful product. Ray Noorda tried to do this at Novell in the early 90s; Caldera's OpenLinux also failed to take over the task from Novell ten years ago. United Linux and a series of followup attempts to standardize Linux all failed to accomplish their aims. A variety of efforts to sell Linux to consumers since then have all made very little progress outside of a small niche of hobbyist users.

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mail Server Hijacked For Spam?

Jun 16, 2012

I only have macs in my network and am not aware of any mac viruses. Afer I had the chance to review everything it became clear the e-mail server was sending out e-mails. SMTP logs for my mail server showed numerous attempts between yesterday and today to send out e-mails. Considering my mail server has not yet been launched and is not being used to either send or receive e-mail I imagine the work must have been done by a hacker ro sometoner else who hijacked my mail server to send out spam e-mail to others.

How can I prevent this from happening again the in future? Is there a security setting that would prevent this? My firewall had a relatively long and safe password but I changed it today just in case. Also, I changed the password for both the firewall and server. Will this help or is it possible for a hacker to connect and gain control of mail mail server without the need to know these passwords? If not in OS X Server, is there a third party application that would protect the mail server from this in the future?
