View 2 RepliesAbout a week ago I enabled FV1. Overnight, the encryption and deletion of the original folder appeared to complete. However, I now have a never ending 'Secure Erase' process showing up in Activity monitor. By never-ending, I mean its always there, although as far as I can tell the secure erase process finished days ago (and surely, on 54GB home folder, it shouldn't take this long anyway). In any case, Finder shows my disk space as freed already.I'm not experiencing any lag in the system, no increased fan speed or temp; in fact, the only way I know its happening is because it
i. appears in AM and Top
ii. it strips the life out of my battery when I'm not on AC Power.
I've tried re-booting to no effect. I've even tried killing the process but it just restarts itself. In Finder from within Snow Leopard, I see two home folder images. There is one with a home icon that appears to be an alias. 'Get Info' says it has 0MB size. There is another 'no access' folder whose size is indeterminate, as Finder never completes the 'Calculating' process. However, looking at these same two folders from Lion (on another partition), the folder with the home icon shows up as a 54GB sparse bundle. The folder with no access remains inaccessible and of indeterminate size. The issue is not critical. If the worst comes to the worst I can wipe this disk and re-install from a clone, but I'd rather find a better solution, if possible.
So I may have one of the Seagate hard drives that are failing badly. Haven't heard back from Seagate to see if my drive and firmware is bad, but since I just bought the drive, I'm thinking of returning it.I'm in the middle of a 7 Pass Secure erase on it (1TB). Do people feel comfortable returning a drive after doing that erase? Or should I just forget about it and destroy the drive and chalk it up to a loss?
View 20 Replies View RelatedI am running Lion on a fairly new iMac 21.5 (bought it last September). Apparently I have changed the Empty Trash method to Secure Erase. I really do not need this nor do I want it as it takes forever to empty the trash. How can I get back to the old method of just emptying the trash?

I try to securely erase big hard drive and Disk Utility in Tiger says Secure Erase. Pass 1 of 7. Estimated time 123 hours
Is this progress bar only for erase 1/7 or for all 7 passes (1-7/7)?
I have a MacBook Pro and I'm wondering what I can do to secure the data the best I can in case it's stolen. When I had a Windows Laptop I had a password to log on. I know someone could still get into it without too much trouble with a reinstall of Windows, going through DOS, etc.
My question, what is the best way to do this on a Mac? I set up a logon password so when my screen saver comes up in a minute of no use it requires a password to get back in. Yet all someone has to do is a restart and for some reason it goes straight into OS X without asking for a password. Is there a way to change this?
Is it possible for me to somehow encrypt my data to somehow further protect it? Of course I don't want to do anything that will slow my system down.
I'm erasing some partitions on a Mac that's leaving my possession, is Zero Out Data secure enough? To erase everything?
View 6 Replies View RelatedOut of the blue tonight, my Mac Mini running OS X Lion will no longer secure erase my empty space. Whenever I try to do so, I get the following error:Â "Secure Erase Free Space failed with the error:Â Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup"Â I've rebooted to no avail. I also did a complete shut down and boot up, but the error persists.

I have a MacBook Pro and am going to sell it to upgrade to one of the newer MacBook Pro's. What is the best way to securely erase it before selling it? I have a lot of work data that I don't want to chance anyone being able to recover. In the past I had a windows program which conformed to DOD security for erasing. Is there anything like that I can do to securely erase my mac hard drive?

Every time I try to erase music from my USB Key or Phone.
You can see that the music or files have been erased, but it doesnt free up and space. When you pop the USB Key into the stereo or play music on the phone, all the files are there.
I have to go through the Disk Utility option to erase stuff, but this erases everything. When you erase on the PC, everything is fine.
I would like to pass on my mac mini 2006 to a friend, and need direction in how to remove my data, in other words, take it back to "fresh out of the box" condition.

How can I erase all data from a MacBook Pro?

I have a 700 GB external HD with a 349 GB MacOSX Extended (Journaled) partition, and a 349 GB FAT32 Partition.
I need to shrink the FAT32 partition to make room for another smallish HFS+ partition so that I can back up my virtual machine (around 30 GB). My question is whether resizing the FAT32 partition in Disk Utility will harm the data in either of my existing partitions. I understand Leopard to have an on-the-fly partitioning ability, but I wasn't sure whether this applied only to certain file systems.
I am running OSX 10.5.8.
I have a mid-2007 20" iMac, 250 GB hard drive, 4 GB memory, and it runs Lion.I understand I will have to reboot the computer with Snow Leopard, since Lion is non-transferrable, but do I do this after I've deauthorized iTunes and done a 35-pass wipe of the hard drive? Also, do you recommend that I add biogradable peanuts to the inside of the box (I have the original) before shipping it, or are the Apple-provided styrofoam bumpers that fit on each corner sufficient? It's going USPS to a military base overseas.

I am selling my MacBook, is there a way to completely erase it of my personal data if I don't have the original disks?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of selling my iMac G5 (I'm getting a new iMac). I've got all my personal data backed up onto an external hard drive. The question I have is regarding my G5 - what's the best way of deleting all my personal data on it? Should I reinstall Tiger using the CD that came with the system and do a complete "Erase and Install", or is there a simpler way?

My MB Air is not booting (I get the ever gray Apple logo screen with the spinning wheel, and nothing happens) Following instructions I found online, I tried the disk utility repair disk and permissions and, apparently, there's nothing wrong. Still, the system won't boot!Â
I'm now trying to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but the system requires about 0.5 GB of additional free disk space to install!Â
Is there anyway I can access the OS terminal screen (command line interface), so I may delete a few files, creating additional disk space?Â

I have about 60 GB of data on a new 750 GB drive that I want securely erased as I am passing that drive on to someone else.
Zero out the drive or do a 7 pass is secure BUT takes a long time for 750 GB
What if I drag those files to trash and do a SECURE EMPTY TRASH - much quicker as I am not writing 750 GB of zeroes but is it as secure?
I bought an imac 2 years ago, and updated it to leopard when that was released.
I no longer have the discs i used for Leopard, only the original mac os x 10.4 discs.I am very soon going to be selling this machine and need to wipe everything so that all is left if the operating system in the form you would expect as if you had just bought a new mac.How can this be achieved, i tried disck utility> erase, but only erase free space was 'highlighted'.
