OS X V10.7 Lion :: "Secure Erase Free Space Failed With The Error: Some Information Was Unavailable During An Internal Lookup"

Mar 25, 2012

Out of the blue tonight, my Mac Mini running OS X Lion will no longer secure erase my empty space. Whenever I try to do so, I get the following error: "Secure Erase Free Space failed with the error: Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup" I've rebooted to no avail. I also did a complete shut down and boot up, but the error persists.

Info:
Mac mini (Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Applications :: No Disk Space After Failed Disk Utility Erase Free Space?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.

The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.

If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

OS X :: Erase Free Disk Space Function Error?

Oct 18, 2010

I interrupted the erase free disk space function and I ended up with zero kb of space left on my HD. I have tried to find the EFTFile1.sparseimage file to no avail. I have also tried deleting other files in order to "flush out" the trash and hopefully open up the rest of the space, but that didn't work either.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Volume Erase Failed - Media Kit Reports Not Enough Space On Device

Jun 20, 2014

I was having problems with the external drive where I store my Time Machine backups, so I tried plugging and unplugging the drive but could not mount the drive. I ran Disk Utility and tried to verify the disk, which told me the disk needed to be repaired. I tried to repair the disk only to get an error message that Disk Utility could not repair the disk and it needed to be reformatted. So I tried to erase the disk with Disk Utility only to get the error message "Volume erase failed: Media kit reports not enough space on this device for requested operation". I am not sure what else to try at this point and could not find any similar questions here.

The drive in question is a 3TB USB Seagate Backup + Desk Media, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It's divided into two partitions, one of which (2.2 TB) holds only Time Machine backups of my desktop and laptop and the other of which (800GB) is formatted similarly with some files stored on it. I was able to verify and repair this other partition. I'm running Disk Utility 13 on an iMac (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running OSX 10.8.5 ...

OS X :: No Free Space - Erase Free Space Interrupted

Mar 20, 2009

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.

This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).

Trash is empty.

I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.

I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.

I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.

OS X :: Skipped Erase Free Space, No Space On HD?

Apr 23, 2009

I managed to interrupt the computer when I selected the "Erase Free Space" option. I had 0GB left on the computer and had to cancel almost all of the applications. I Googled and found that /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems should locate the file when entered in Terminal, but whenever I try that, it just says "Permission denied." It only asked for a password once, and when I tried entering it, it said that there was no such file. I located a few other temporary files and deleted those, and also tried making empty folders on the desktop to empty the trash. It freed up 6.7 GB, but there's still a lot of space missing. I'm not sure what else to try or how to get the space back.

i was Erasing Free Space in Disk Utility, after a while I needed to Force Quit another program but I mistakenly quit Disk Utility and now it says I only have 3.1 GB space available when it should be around 270 GB available. I'm sure Disk Utility said it was 'Creating Temporary File' at this time this happened.

I'm now also getting a message which states I need to clear out space on my start up disk.

Sep 23, 2008

I purchased a 32gb usb flash drive from ebay. I transferred some music on there, it crashed half way through transferring.

When I restarted and plugged it in, it didn't appear on the desktop. I went into Disk Utility and tried to erase it, I get the following error:

So I then tried the following in Terminal:

diskutil eraseDisk HFS+ newdisk disk2

But got the following message:

OS X :: Disk Erase Error - File System Formatter Failed

Apr 26, 2010

I'm trying to format a new external hard drive and it is not working. It is a Seagate 1TB Expansion drive. The box only says PC and Windows, but the guy said 'it should work on a mac too, as long as you format it on a mac', and other people on the internets say it should be fine also e.g. here.

So, when I go into Disk Utilities > Erase tab > change Volume Format to Mac OSX Extended > click erase, it gets about 2% in and then an error window pops up which says "Disk Erase failed. Disk Erase failed with the error: File system formatter failed."

MacBook Pro :: Difference In Free Space On Internal Drive?

May 13, 2012

I'm confused - when I look at my Storage info under the "About This Mac" item, my internal drive shows that it has "141.6 GB free out of 499.25 GB" Yet when I look at a Finder window, the drive shows 230.89 GB available. That's an almost 90 GB difference. I'm assuming (until someone tells me otherwise) that the "About This Mac" information is the 'truest' but I, frankly, don't know.

I am trying to copy 2000 or so files (jpg images) from the hard drive of my imac running show leopard to a sd card. I keep getting the item "filename.jpg" can't be copied because there isn't enough free space. I can go back and copy smaller groups of files and then the file that I get the error on. But even coping 10 files I run into the error on certain files but I can copy all the other files in the selection and then the file that gave the error without a problem. All the files were exported from iPhoto resized to fit a digital photo frame I bought for a christmas present. Looking for a way to get the files to the sd card without coping small batches.

MacBook Air :: How To Erase Data To Make Space Available To Reinstall Mac OS X Lion

Mar 13, 2012

My MB Air is not booting (I get the ever gray Apple logo screen with the spinning wheel, and nothing happens) Following instructions I found online, I tried the disk utility repair disk and permissions and, apparently, there's nothing wrong.  Still, the system won't boot!

I'm now trying to reinstall Mac OS X Lion, but the system requires about 0.5 GB of additional free disk space to install!

Is there anyway I can access the OS terminal screen (command line interface), so I may delete a few files, creating additional disk space?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Free Space Fragmentation?

May 1, 2012

I recently downloaded the iDefrag demo and it reports that my files are 0.7% fragmented but the free space on my disk is 75% fragmented, what does this mean?  Should I be concerned and should I defrag the drive?  My mac seems to take forever to boot up these days and programs open very slowly.  I work with quite large Photoshop files regularly, but my scratch disk is set to a different drive to the system disk.

Any recommendations for the best way to learn about troubleshooting the Mac would be appreciated, as I'm keen to avoid any down time due to failures of any kind (I don't mind investing some money for the right training).  The area I'm particularly interested in is restoring a system, if there are certain corrupt files, but doing this without affecting all the third party program files etc.  I use carbon copy cloner to keep an exact copy of my system disk but am worried that if the system files becomes corrupt, I'm just making a copy of the corruption onto another disk!
