MacBook Pro :: Backup Data On Hard Drive When Time Machine Is Setup On External Drive?

Sep 5, 2014

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Backup Drive Failed

Mar 30, 2012

I bought a new drive and need to get my Time Machine files off the old failed drive. I'm sure there are plenty of discussions about this but I can't find any. (I so dislike the new design for the support communities.)The old drive sometimes lets me access TM so I want to take advantage of one of those times to get everything across. I know it is a very slow process if it can be done

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: External Drive Locked After Time Machine Restore?

Apr 3, 2012

I've restored my Mac OS x (10.6.8) from a time machine backup after reformatting the iMac's hard drive. After restoring all my files the external drive that time machine uses is locked and I cannot seem to get it to unlock itself. I've tried resetting the permissions on the "get info" panel without any success (Did a restart after every change- it just seems to go back to custom priviledges). I've also toggled the "Ignore Ownership" toggle on and off- again followed by a restart each time.

The external drive is connected by Firewire 800 and is a RAID 1 configuration using two 2Tb drives.I don't want to lose my existing time machine files on that external disc- hense formatting it is out of the question..

MacBook Pro :: External Hdd As Network Time Machine Drive / Backing Up On Snow Leopard?

Oct 1, 2010

I have 2 macs in my house.. a macbook pro and a macbook air. I have an old dell desktop running windows 7 that has a terabyte external harddrive hoooked up to it. I want to be able to use it as a network time machine drive. Both laptops are running snow leopard. I was wondering is this possible and if so, how can I do it. Currently I am able to see the desktop and the external hardrive on my network from the macs, and I am able to drag and drop onto them, however I want to be able to use time machine.

OS X :: Unable To Backup With Time Machine / Snow Leopard Cannot Locate Network Drive

Apr 20, 2010

So I have a 15" MBP running Snow Leopard and have recently installed a Western Digital MyBook 1TB World Edition on the network to serve as my Time Machine backup drive. Most of the time, it works flawlessly and OSX / Time Machine does its thing and backs up.

Every once in a while, Time Machine says backup has been delayed because it cannot locate the network drive. This when I can easily access the network drive from other machines on the network, and also from my MBP in Finder. It's just Time Machine that somehow fails to find that drive. When I enter Time Machine preferences and look for the drive, it brings it up immediately and asks me for the username and pwd and viola ... it's up and running again.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: External Drive Mounts But Not Recognized As Time-machine Backup

May 30, 2012

I have a MBP 13" 2009, and had a HDD fail yesterday. I have an external HDD for backups with timemachine (WD 1Tb), with daily backups.I bought a new internal hdd, plugged it in today, and when presented with the install options, I selected recover from backup. There, my drive appears (in yellow), but when pressing continue, I get a message: No system backups found.

I looked around on forums and people suggested that a normal installation should be done followed by migration assistant. When I try using migration assistant and select Time Machine backup, the next page just shows up empty with a rotating thing in the middle.

When I browse the Backups.backupdb folder, everything is there, including my last backup from Saturday. I see that I can recover my files, which obviously is the most important bit, but I would like to restore Applications, settings etc, as to not waste too much time.

Hardware :: Recover Data From Dead Lacie Hard Drive / Unable To Mount Hard Drive

Sep 6, 2009

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.

Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.

Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.

I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

Hardware :: Need The Data Off From A Dead Hard Drive

Feb 9, 2010

Would anybody have any ideas for getting a user account off of a dead hard drive from a Power PC G5? I've heard alot about Disk Warrior but it's a company computer so I won't be allowed to use any software we don't currently own.I was reading freezing the hard drive would help the contraction of the materials and causes whatever is stuck to become unstuck. So I left the hard drive in my car last night in zero degree weather but it didn't help. It still doesn't mount. Any ideas even if they are crazier than putting it in the freezer .

Hardware :: Copy A Time Machine Ext Drive Contents To Another External Drive

Jan 14, 2009

I've got an external drive that was a Time Machine backup drive. It's at the police station as evidence for something and they will not let me take it back. However, they will let me come down and make a copy of it. I might only have one shot at this so I'm trying to think of the best way to do it successfully and quickly.

Can I just bring another external with me, my Macbook, and then copy the files from the Time Machine backup external drive to the other external drive? If so, what is the facility for doing this quickly? I'm kind of new at Macs and am unsure. I do not have an extra Mac that I can simply use Time Machine to restore to to replace it's contents.

Mac Pro :: Time Machine Drive - RAID0 V Slower Single Drive

May 27, 2010

I'm a graphics professional taking the plunge into a Mac Pro. After some research, this is my notional drive setup:??GB SSD Boot Drive in the optical bay2 x 1TB 7200rpm SATA in RAID0, partitioned for 1.Data and 2.Scratch (therefore <2TB data)I obviously need to make sure that RAID0 is safely backed up. I've got an online backup service in case my house burns down and I'll be backing up individual projects onto optical media, but I will of course want to Time Machine the Data partition of the RAID.Now, for that Time machine drive I can either create another RAID0 from the same kind of drives (with the risk that entails), or for about the same money get a 2TB 5400rpm (leaving a drive bay free for future use, possibly another backup).

OS X :: Installing Leopard With Dead DVD Drive?

Feb 19, 2009

I've googled and searched and tried so many things. I'm coming up on my wits end here. OK! Backstory. Have an iMac and a macbook (specs in my sig). The iMac has a dead DVD drive, I have a lacie external DVD drive for it now. Can't load Leopard from external drive. I load a disc image of the Leopard install onto an external harddrive (usb not firewire) - no workie. I partitioned the drive on my laptop thinking I can use this computer to boot from via the firewire. First I installed Leopard on the laptop (wish I hadn't done that now!) - and now I can't get the computers to see each other. When I restart T (on either computer) the drive/disc won't pop up on the other. What do I do? I can't find anything on the net regarding problems with tiger and leopard OS's not seeing each other.
