I just got a new 256GB SSD drive for my mac, I want to import my data from time machine backup, but its larger than 256GB since it used to be on my old optical drive. How can I import my latest backup keeping out some big files on the external drive?

I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

I am doing a backup prior to my first ever format & reinstall. Time Machine will not allow my use of this external hard drive that I had previously used for a Time Machine backup . Time Machine says, " The backup disk is not in Mac OS Extended ( journaled) Format, which is required." how do I change it to Extended (journaled) Format?
Yes the external hard drive in question is meant for Mac.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just replaced the stock 160GB HD in my unibody macbook with a WD Blue Scorpio 640GB HD. I used Super Duper to clone the old drive to the new one, approximately 115 GB.
Now Time Machine wants to backup the full 115GB to my Time Capsule, which kinda sucks because it's going to be a redundent backup that's gonna take up over a 10th of my TC's space. Is there any way to avoid this and still use Time Machine?
I have a hard drive that has backed up my desktop computer using time machine. My desktop computer is now on it's way to my new location, and in the meantime I'd like to put all the backed up stuff onto my laptop. How do I load all the time machine stuff onto the laptop? Is there a way of like, important it all, or do I have to go in and just manually copy over whatever I want?

My MBP has a 500GB HDD and I have about 70GB free. My backup drive is also a 500GB HDD and has been erased. I chose the drive for my Time Machine backup but it fails and Time Machine says it needs 507GB when the estimated was only 429GB. Why does it need the additional 80GB?

My problem is time machine now says I don't have enough space for a backup. The iMac has a new hard drive so I am not sure what is going on. I could always Format and restart TM but I am not real happy about trying that. It will be may last resort.

After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back
I recently upgraded to Yosemite on my iMac and now I can not access backed up data on my time machine. Time Machine will open normal, but does not allow me to click on different favorites to the left in Finder. I tried my other iMac which was also upgraded to Yosemite and even though this Mac is connected to the time machine via cable, I still can not access favorites in Finder. Seems like Time Machine is frozen.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Book Air with Yosemite installed. I also have Time Machine backing up to a Time Capsule. Plus, two other Macs are backing up to the Time Capsule. The problem I am having is that the Mac Book Air backups are not working. It keeps say "Preparing Backup" then after a while it says "Stopped". I have tried deleting the "In Progress File" but this has not worked. The other backups on the other machines seem to be working fine.

I have a Mac Book Air that has been backing up to a Time Capsule. I do have other Macs backing up to the Time Capsule which work fine. For some reason it is saying the last backup was the 9th of November. I thought maybe this has something to do with the lack of space. So I have added another disk to the Time Machine and I am not sure whether it is backing up to this one as it is saying the "Backup is incomplete".

Since my Mac was freshly formatted, I tend to keep it tidy and clean and keep good track of what comes in. I noticed my time machine backing up 15 GB of data which allegedly would have been added within two days. I could absolutely not trace this on my computer nor when I compared current folder contents with the most recent backup. Downloads, Apps., System are all excluded from my time-machine and couldn't represent such a dramatic data increase on my separate HD.

I was thinking of storing music and pictures, as well as a Time Machine backup of the SSD, and storing a Time Machine backup of my music and pictures on the Time Capsule. Will I need to partition the G-Raid?

My time machine hasn't backed up since November 22. Every time it went for it's scheduled back-up it skipped and went to the next scheduled backup. When I tried to reconfigure the time capsule it won't let me select the disk that I would like to use for the time machine. Everything else is working fine (airport wifi at least). View 1 Replies View RelatedAm I understanding correctly (from reading some other discussions here) that there are issues with Time Machine back ups and Yosemite, and that it's not just me having these problems? Since I upgrade I am having major issues with wifi connection being dropped and my Time Machine hasn't performed a back up in 19 days. It looks as though it will but stalls at "preparing back up". When it finally stops I get an error message saying it can't find the disc. I've restored the Time Machine to factory settings and started over more than once but still get the same message. Am I doing something wrong or is this an Apple issue?

Each time im doing a time machine backup, the external drive does not eject, the icon becomes pale, but remains on the desktop. But when I did not just make a backup I can eject it normaly.
My disc contains two partitions, one with the backups. When my problem occurs the first partition is ejected but not the Time Machine one.
I tried to reformat the partition but the problem persists. My hard drive is a GDrive mobile usb 1 TO purchased at the apple store.

I want to upgrade my macbook pro to Yosemite (I have mavericks installed). The Apple guy recommended me to backup. So If I backup through time machine ON my Mavericks macbook, Will I be able to restore it on Yosemite after installing it ?I am asking this because time machine captures the "look" of Mavericks and Yosemite looks different. Will the (Mavericks)backup be compatible to Yosemite ?
