OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: External Drive Locked After Time Machine Restore?

Apr 3, 2012

I've restored my Mac OS x (10.6.8) from a time machine backup after reformatting the iMac's hard drive. After restoring all my files the external drive that time machine uses is locked and I cannot seem to get it to unlock itself. I've tried resetting the permissions on the "get info" panel without any success (Did a restart after every change- it just seems to go back to custom priviledges). I've also toggled the "Ignore Ownership" toggle on and off- again followed by a restart each time.

The external drive is connected by Firewire 800 and is a RAID 1 configuration using two 2Tb drives.I don't want to lose my existing time machine files on that external disc- hense formatting it is out of the question..

Hardware :: Desktop / Portable External Hard Drive And Time Machine With AEX

Aug 7, 2010

Would a USB bus-powered portable external hard drive (Like the WD Passport) be slower at backing up than an AC powered desktop external hard drive? I've got a desktop external hard drive that I'm using for Time Machine backups over WiFi connected to an airport extreme, but it's dieing and I'd like to replace it. Preferably I'd like to get a 1gb portable drive so I can use it for both backing up and travelling - however if it will result in slower speeds in transferring data then I'll just get a desktop drive.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Restore Failed External HD To New Hard Drive From Time Machine?

Sep 11, 2014

Since the harddrive of my IMac was full, I added an external harddrive to the system for my photos. I use another external harddrive for time machine back-ups (backing up both the IMac and external harddrive with my iPhoto libraries). Recently the EHD with my photo libraries crashed. I now want to restore it from time machine onto a new external harddrive, but am not quite sure how to do this.

Hardware :: Best Portable Hard Drive For Time Machine?

Feb 4, 2010

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or preferences on a good 500gb (or more) portable hard drive for Time Machine on my Macbook. I need it to be portable because I travel quite a bit.

I have been looking at the Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST905003FAA2E1-RK but I can't tell a) if this will work for my macbook and b) if it will work for Time Machine.

Any thoughts or recommendations? Would any portable hard drive that I buy on Amazon work for Time Machine?

MacBook Pro :: Getting An External USB Hard Drive - For Either Music And Movie Collection Or For Time Machine

Aug 14, 2010

I got my macbook pro yesterday and I am already loving it - I was looking for some advice on some accessories and things.

When I got the macbook with my student discount I got a printer for 20 from apple, as well as applecare for 3 years and a 18 ipod nano and a case/sleeve for when I have to bring it travelling.

1. I am at university/college and I was wondering what accessories you would recommend me?

2. I am looking at getting an external USB hard drive - for either my music and movie collection or for time machine.

What drive would you recommend? The apple one is too expensive, I assume any standard USB one will work though?

And is it possible to partition the drive, if it was big enough, and make like a 320gb partition for time machine and then have the rest for normal storage?

3. I know everyone says there are no viruses for macs etc. and stuff, but there is antivirus software available, which there must be a reason for? Is it wise to get antivirus software for a mac, or is it completely un-needed? I have also enabled the firewall.

4. Does anyone think mobileme is worth paying that much for? The guy in the apple store said it would be especially good since I have an iphone as well. And would it work with my gmail account?

Cheers

Applications :: ITunes Keeps Changing Library Folder / Saving Music Files To External Hard Drive?

Oct 2, 2010

I have a WD external hard drive that I got for the holiday's last year. Here lately I've been using it as my iTunes library. A great way to free up some space on my Powerbook g4. Question is, why does iTunes keep changing my library folder after I'd already changed it when I initially set up the hard drive as my iTunes library destination?

Another question is how do I make sure that all my music files automatically go to the folder on the external hard drive when I download music. For example I may snag a free song from a website and will double click it after downloading and it plays in itunes. I want that file to be saved on my external hard drive as well (yes it's plugged up and plugged in).

I only have an 8g ipod so I have to constantly check and uncheck songs that I want to hear, so I want to be sure they are all in the same locale. And one way I know that certain files are on my internal and not external is when i unplug my external those files still play when they shouldn't unless it's plugged up.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: External Drive Mounts But Not Recognized As Time-machine Backup

May 30, 2012

I have a MBP 13" 2009, and had a HDD fail yesterday. I have an external HDD for backups with timemachine (WD 1Tb), with daily backups.I bought a new internal hdd, plugged it in today, and when presented with the install options, I selected recover from backup. There, my drive appears (in yellow), but when pressing continue, I get a message: No system backups found.

I looked around on forums and people suggested that a normal installation should be done followed by migration assistant. When I try using migration assistant and select Time Machine backup, the next page just shows up empty with a rotating thing in the middle.

When I browse the Backups.backupdb folder, everything is there, including my last backup from Saturday. I see that I can recover my files, which obviously is the most important bit, but I would like to restore Applications, settings etc, as to not waste too much time.

OS X :: External Drive - How To Restore From Time Machine?

Jun 25, 2009

I have had Time Machine configured to back up my photos and videos on an external drive. My Time Machine backup is a separate drive attached to my MacBook by FireWire. I have Leopard OS. I have in the past successfully retrieved deleted photos from the Time Machine backups using iPhoto.

Now, unfortunately, the external drive with the photos and videos has developed a problem (possibly power-related) so that my MacBook no longer recognizes that drive. Obviously, this means that iPhoto can't find/open that photo library. Which means that iPhoto can't access the backup via Time Machine. The photos must surely be on the Time Machine backup but I can't figure out any way to retrieve them.

OS X :: Time Machine And Snow Leopard Restore?

Jun 14, 2009

I am a little new to Time Machine, so I was wondering if anyone could answer this? I am currently using Time Machine to backup my Mac. I am running Leopard and I want to move to Snow Leopard when it comes out. When i get Snow Leopard, I will perform a reformat on my hard drive so its a nice fresh install. My question is what options will I get when I get when I go to install it as I have Time Machine? I'll be honest and say I'll be happy to just copy across my iTunes, iPhoto, contacts and calender over to Snow Leopard and not worry about anything else (stuff like downloading Firefox takes seconds and isn't a problem). Is this an option? Can i just install Snow Leopard totally fresh, then connect the Time Machine drive and copy the iTunes (etc etc) folders/files/docments over to my fresh install?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Restore Backup From Time Machine In 10.6.8

Feb 28, 2012

I am running 10.6.8 on my MacPro (early 2008). I have 4 internal hard drives. The main boot drive has 10.6.8 and the secondary drive with a system has Lion. I cannot completely upgrade to Lion on my main drive until all my software is compatible. My main boot drive started acting like it's in slow motion 2 days ago. No matter what I do (DiskWarrior, Disk Utility, zap PRAM, fix permissions) nothing seems to work. Every mouse click or movement gives me the dreaded spinning wheel and it hangs for about 5 min and then does what it's supposed to do.

I have logged into a new account w/ no special 3rd party apps or utilities and it still does the same thing. Hard drive diagnostics say my hard drive is ok. I have tried reinstalling the 10.6.8 combo update but that hangs after a few minutes of starting. I thought about restoring a Time Machine backup from 1 day before this happened, but before I attempt a full disk backup, need to ask what to do so as not lose everything. I assume I must boot up from another disk or hard drive, correct? Can I simply select all the system folders and apps folder or do you think I should do a complete restore?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Get Time Machine Restore Done On IMac

Mar 25, 2012

Having issues getting a Time Machine restore done on my iMac running Snow Leopard. I was using a Seagate GoFlex Home network drive for the Time Machine Backups and my main drive failed and had to be replaced. When trying to restore the Time Machine does not recognize that the GoFlex has a backup to restore from. I have tried several different strategies around this. I used the terminal to make hidden files visible and I can then see some hidden files and directories on the GoFlex Home but still no actual time machine files.

I then got the adaptor for the Network Drive to turn it into an external USB 3.0 drive. I could then see and mount a time machine directory that was now visible as .timemachinebackup on the GoFlex Drive. When I reboot with install disk to perform restore the GoFlex Drive is not recognized as having any backups to restore from. Is there another terminal command or some type of special mounting I am missing? BTW - The GoFlex Drive appears as a NTFS drive in the Disk Utility.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Restore Strategy?

Mar 29, 2012

I'm using a combination of Super Duper and Time Machine to back up my Mac Pro at work. My question is this (and at this point it is hypothetical): Let's say I need to do a complete restore of my system. The Time Machine backup is current and the Super Duper clone is a couple of days old. I know how to reverse the clone in Super Duper. To restore the files that Time Machine has and Super Duper doesn't have, would I search the Time Machine backup for all files created since the Super Duper clone and restore them? Or is there a better way? I know I could do a complete restore from Time Machine, but I am comfortable with Super Duper. We would be talking about two or three days' worth of files that may not be in the clone.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Restore A Second Volume From Time Machine?

Apr 15, 2012

I lost an external hard drive due to failure. Luckily, I found out that for some reason Time Machine had backed up the drive's volume along with my startup internal drive. Now I just want to restore that lost  drive's volume folder from Time Machine to a NEW external drive. However, I imagine that if I merely click "Restore" from Time Machine app it will attempt to put this volume (which is 100GB) onto my internal drive.

Is there a way to direct the location of the restore of that volume folder to my new external drive? Or can I just go into my Time Machine Backup drive and drag and drop the volume contents from the Time Machine volume onto it?

OS X :: Won't Restore From Time Machine After Complete Format Of Hard Drive

Jul 29, 2010

I recently (2 months ago) got a 17" MBP, and I used Target Disk/Firewire to "clone" the contents of my 2 year old iMac onto it. It all worked great, and went fine, however last night I attempted to use Boot Camp to create a 64GB partition to install Windows 7, and got the dreaded "The disk cannot be partitioned" error, "please format your HD and reinstall OS X" message.

I ran various tools (Disk Utility from OS X Install DVD, Disk Warrior, MainMenu, Onyx, etc) to try repair and perform maintenance, then I bought iDefrag and ran a full defrag overnight, but this morning I noticed it had failed half way through, and it too suggested reformatting the HD.

I have a full Time Machine backup on my 1TB USB drive (connected to my Mac Mini, it backs up to the MBP over the network) so my question is how easy is to it completely format my MBP hard disk and restore a complete Time Machine backup? I'm completely panicking even about the though of it, I've never done a reinstall/format since I switched to Macs in July 2008!!

I've installed a new drive in my Mac Pro. I now have to move my iTunes Music folder into the new drive and junk the old one. I know that I can use iTunes/File/Add to Library menu item to get iTunes to locate the new Music Library; however, this is going to leave me with two entries for every track, one good and one broken after I remove the old drive. I think I should junk the old library and then have iTunes rebuild it from the Add To command...
