OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Fixing An Alias By Editing Path Of 'original'

Mar 19, 2012

I had to move around data and now I have a ton of aliases to fix. I know you can fix an alias by doing "get info" and find original but the window that opens hides the original path and can't be moved. Further more I'd simply need to edit out the first part of the "original" location. I thought opening an alias in textedit would allow me to do that easily but it's unreadable. how I could fix these quickly instead of browsing deep in folder structure to find them again?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Software Update Server / No Original For Index.sucatalog Alias?

Jun 28, 2012

Trying to set up the Software Update Server under 10.6.8 Server. Have everything set up properly as per Apple's documentation, but all clients error out on software updates (saying they can't find the index. sucatalog file). When you view this file, which is an alias, within the HTML folder that is created when you enable the Software Update service in Server Admin, the alias doesn't link to an original.I've tried this on two separate 10.6.8 Server installations and I get the same error on both machines.Where is the alias "index.sucatalog" supposed to point to?Software Update Error Log in Server Admin says "Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible" and points to the alias file.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Grey Screen Startup Due To Path Monitoring?

Feb 2, 2012

I have a mac pro running 10.6.6. Occaisionally startup gets stuck at a grey screen and requires a hard reboot or two. I've not found any correlation between what is plugged into the mac or not plugged in and the successful or unsuccessful startup. It just appears random. I've begun studying the console for anything that might indicate what's going on when this happens. One thing I notice is the following line: 2/2/12 8:37:31 AMcom.apple.launchd.peruser.501[134](com.apple.FolderActions.folders) Path monitoring failed on "/Volumes/LittleWet_02/SFX_aiff": No such file or directory

This line was the last line in the console before the hard reboot a few times, suggesting it might be the culprit. The volume it is looking for is an external HD that was connected to this computer once almost a year ago and never again. I can't determine what startup process is looking for that SFX_aiff directory, or why. Is there any way to tell this system to cease looking for that volume upon startup?

Nov 1, 2008

I was cleaning up my desktop, and I created a new folder and was going to just drag everything into it. I selected everything, dragged and WHOA! All of my original files were GONE and only alias's were left. I search and the originals aren't found, I open the alias's and they want me to find the originals. The originals are just GONE. And I still don't know what I did!!

OS X :: Fixing Snow Leopard Memory Leakage?

Sep 6, 2009

I'm running SL, haven't rebooted in several days.

I have no desktop applications running.

I'm on a MBP 13" w 4GB RAM.

Activity monitor is reporting 2.21GB memory active, 908.5MB wired. 106MB free.

Most unusual, is that I do not see any application in Activity Monitor using much real memory, yet it reports 2.21 GB memory active. I have had as much as 1.4GB swap space used, with no obvious culprit.

Any idea where the memory is going?

OS X :: How To Remove Alias (arrow) Symbol For Alias Icons

Jul 23, 2008

I want to create stacks for my Applications and put them in the dock by type. Utilities, Music & Video, iLife, etc. I think what I will do is make aliases for all the applications and put them in subfolders separate from the Applications folder, so then I have these 3-6 subfolders in my dock as stacks that I can display in Grid or Fan mode. And I don't have to see all my applications in one jumbled Grid and search for them.

Yes, I know Spotlight or QuickSilver could access them differently.

My question is, when I have created this duplicate system with the aliases to the apps, how do I remove the Alias (arrow) portion of the icon so that they look just like the actual icon down in the stack (or in my subfolders, etc)?

OS X :: Fixing Leopard Terminal Character Set?

Dec 18, 2007

Can anyone explain to me why this is happening and how to fix it (see screenshot)? It's supremely irritating when I happen to be in a directory where a parent folder ends with "o", because then it does this crap with the slash and it shifts all the text back one space but leaves the cursor out in front. This happens on both my Leopard machines.

On a related note, what's with the fancy quotes in Terminal now? How unnecessary...is there a way to turn those off too?

OS X :: Need Original Leopard To Install SL?

Oct 21, 2009

At the moment, I am using the Unibody MacBook Pro with Leopard (OSX 10.5), but I would like to install Snow Leopard. How does it actually work? Do I have to install Snow Leopard over my existing Leopard? And if I want to reinstall Snow Leopard while using it, will I have to install Leopard again in order to be able to install Snow Leopard? The problem is that I heard that Snow Leopard checks whether you have original Leopard installed on your mac in order to progress with the installation. So will I always have to install it over Leopard so that I will need both dvds (Leopard and Snow Leopard) in the future?

MacBook Pro :: How To Move Original Files To External Drive, Not Just Copy And Delete Original

Dec 31, 2009

I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

As I have not yet got much data on my Mac I am thinking of going back to my original installation that came with the imac. I have backed up my data I want keep photos, music etc; onto DVD. When I put the installation disc in what is the best option to pick ? I do appreciate that I will have to re-install photoshop and other apps; I have installed. Will I have to re-configure my internet again? Basically I want to re-install the operating system I am also thinking of buying Superdupper any thoughts on this product.

OS X :: Installing Leopard Back On Original HD / SuperDuper Unable To Perform Operation

Aug 7, 2010

I'm planning of sending in my white macbook to AppleCare for a few repairs regarding the white casing (cracks) but do not want to send in my Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive.

I called AppleCare and they said they prefer it when you send in the original hard drive, for whatever reason they stated. My personal reason why I don't want to send in my 500GB Hard Drive is that I have a ton of files in there that are important and don't have another 300+ hard drive lying around to back everything up. Another reason is that my Leopard Family Pack disc I purchase years ago is at my parent's house in New York and I live in California, so getting it would be a huge hassle considering it's somewhere in boxes of storage and my folks are in Venice till the 15th of June.

Look, essentially what I'm freaking out over is that I've heard many cases that when you send in your computer to applecare, its not uncommon to get a macbook back with an erased hard drive.

I just don't wanna deal with the hassle. So am looking to avoid it altogether. Doing so bytaking out my 500GB HD and popping in the original 80GB HD that the Mac came with. I thought I had Leopard in there but when I put in the 80GB HD in the Macbook and turned on the Mac, a confused faced folder came on and turned off.

I want to send in my Macbook with the 80GB HD and that HD to have Leopard on it...so I decided to do the same method I used when I transferred everything from my 80GB HD to my 500GB HD when I first purchased it.

I used SuperDuper! application, free version...but it didn't work.

I set it up to "Copy: Mac HD to Untitled" (Untitled was the name of the 80GB since I erased it when I got my 500GB HD hoping to use it for Time Machine but never did)

I tried this twice, each time taking about 2 hours to transfer and copy to the untitled HD. I tried "back up all files" & "back up user files." But after this process was done and I popped in the untitled HD into the Mac I continued to get the same confused folder face..twice.

Any help on the matter is really appreciated as I'm highly considering not even sending my Macbook in with the 500GB HD to completely avoid any possible frustation if that HD was to magically erased.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Migration Assistant - Data/content Files Isn't Recognizing The Old, Original Contents?

Mar 13, 2012

I had an Imac running Snow Leopard... I mistakenly(?) thought i could change Permissions by selecting "Everyone" from the startup volume HD icon's Permissions panel and in turn, chose "Apply to All Enclosed Files and Folders" option thinking this would allow all other computers on a small office network to have total free and clear no-security-required, file-sharing read/write- access to this Imac's contents. After doing this and attempting reboot, I couldn't get access to the OS  at all even after i ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtilities, so, wound up doing Archive/Install - but used an OS 10.5 disk because i (mistakenly)thought that my 10.6 Snow Leopard disk was only an Updater.  So after installing 10.5 again I ran the OS 10.63 disk's installer, bringing the new System Folder up to Snow Leopard. I'm up and running - most system software updates downloaded/done.  Problem is now this --  stuff like:  Email Clients,  Itunes, Browsers, any Apps  that had associated data/content files isn't recognizing the old, original contents that belonged to them - instead, these apps all

OS X :: Leopard Upgrade To Snow Leopard ... The Same As The Full Version Of Snow Leopard?

Jun 13, 2009

... long time reader, first time poster!! So I'm doing it. I'm switching from PC to Mac. I've been waiting for a while now and the new MacBook Pro's have convinced me. I'm buying the 13 inch this week.

However I'm slightly worried about the upgrade to Snow Leopard in September.

My question is if I buy a new MacBook Pro this week and upgrade from the current version of Leopard to Snow Leopard will it be the EXACT same as the version of Snow Leopard that ships with new MacBooks after September?

Is the upgrade just the same as the full software version available post September? Does the upgrade it just detect if you have the previous software and installs as if it were the full? Or does it just "patch" things depending on what's different from previous versions?

I can wait till after Snow Leopard is released in September 09 if it is different to Leopard upgraded to Snow Leopard.
