OS X :: Possible To Make Copies Of Partitions On Other Drives?
Mar 23, 2009
Basicly i thought the best way to explain my hard drive layout is with a picture. So thats how its layed out, basicly i want my macbook to be backed up, but then i also want to have certain things stored off the laptop, but i dont want to lose them through a drive faliure. So i want a 250GB partition from one drive to be completly backed up by another 250gb drive. How could i do this? RAID? or some sort of mirror thing? or can u get a back up program that will automatic do it daily? Does time machine do this kind of thing?I aslo dont mind if they are both plugged into the macbook through cables, or the 250gb drive in connected to the 1tb drive, which is then connected to the macbook, like a daisychain?
I have older OSX versions that are on disc in addition to some older software. I want to have these files stored for when I need to make another boot disc or an install. I want to have them as .dmg files. I guess that is the default that you can open on OSX, add the serial number and install?
Can I use the OSX operating system to make these? I also have toast 11. Can I do the same thing?
I need to have 2 copies of Mozilla Firefox with abolutely separate settings on my iMac.
On my previous PC I had 2 portable copies of FIrefox from portableapps.com Can something like that be performed on iMac?
Why: sometimes I need to use a US proxy setiings in brouser (to purchase @ US stores that block foreign IPs). On the other hand I have my main everyday Firefox set up for my everyday needs. Switching settings is quite annoying. I just had a separate copy of FF on my PC for use with US proxe settings before i moved to iMac.
I'm having trouble with getting Windows to understand the partition structure of my USB drive. I formatted it into 3 partitions: One HFS+, the second FAT, and the third also FAT. For some odd reason, though, Windows refuses to recognize the FAT partitions and mount them, ignoring the HFS+ partition it doesn't recognize in the process. Instead, what it's doing is mounting only the FIRST partition on the drive, ignoring anything else there - even if said partition is the GPT protective partition. I'm understandably baffled by this. The reason I'm doing this is to make a "universal" development drive. I tried formatting the whole drive as FAT, which sort of works (my IDE loads from the drive okay, but refuses to update itself, complaining that the profile is in use, only tested on the Mac side). So, I came up with what I thought was the brilliant idea of mixed filesystem partitioning to work around the issue... but of course that doesn't work either.
I consolidated my iTunes library because some files were on an external and the rest on the computer and when I did this it made copys of most of the songs in my music folder. Also it didn't consolidate the whole library it still shows many songs on the external.
The actual iTunes library is right, just not all songs point to the computer hard drive.
I have about 100 gigs worth of duplicates that I have no idea how to delete besides doing them one by one. Any ideas on how to fix this?
This is how my iTunes folder looks for most albums.
how to make a boot camp installation with three partitions?
I mean one for mac, one for windows and one for data to be shared between the OS's? When I try to create 3 partitions on leopard installation, when I start the boot camp assistant, it doesn't work. Or when I create an extra partition inside windows, mac is not able to see it.
I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage. So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?
so i have been using pc all my life, but now i have a new macbook and ive been downloading a lot of things. the other day an error popped up and said i was running low on disk space... ive been lazy about "reconfiguring my external hard drive for my mac" like the apple employee told me i needed to do, but i decided i should finally do it to free up space on my computer.
i have a seagate external hard drive and i plugged it into my computer and erased everything on it so i could start using it with time machine. after it started backing everything up an error popped up saying that i only have 2.2 MB available.... so on my system preferences i reconfirmed that it says 2.2 MB of 232.9 GB available. this doesnt make any sense because i just wiped my external drive, plus i didnt have much on it to begin with.
so i guess my question is, how do i make that space available?
also, i mainly wanted to back up all of my documents, music, and movies so that i could delete some movies and documents from my computer that i dont need every day and make space for more, but then when i plug my ext hard drive back in to my computer, wont it just mirror my computer with time machine and defeat the purpose of storing things on it because they will just be deleted?
i know im lame, but im really trying to get used to my mac which i know is way easier than im making it out to be.
I have to hard drives in my powermac. And I am running out of space with the one that has the OS on it.
I want to make the 2 internal hard drives i have appear as one so i can still install and use things that say "must have mac OS installed on this drive to use" or whatever.
i've heard of people using RAID to join them, but i want details on how i could do this.
I'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...
Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.
Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.
I have a question regarding Time Machine functionality. Here's my situation. I have two hard drives in my Pro: one that operates as a Boot drive, and one for storage. Right now I have Time Machine set up to backup my storage drive, but I was wondering if it was possible to have plug in a second external drive and use it to back up the Boot drive. I searched for a similar thread, but couldn't really find anything. Has anybody successfully done this?
I have been running OSX on both partitions of a dual partitioned drive for some time now. I need to do this because I run both Avid and Final Cut. Avid hates when you update your system and Final Cut hates when you don't update your system. I keep all my media on an external and both partitions use it for storage. The solution I have works great, except I'm running out of storage space on my internal drive.
I'd like to move the Avid partition out to a USB drive and boot from that for the rare times I use Avid. I'd still keep my media on an external and use my internal drive for the primary boot (my final cut system). I hear this would be a horribly slow option though as a flash drive is not quite fast enough for a boot option.
My alternative is install OSX on my external. I hear this is a bad idea too because that is where I keep my media. Apparently you should not cut video with your capture media and your OS on the same drive because they are accessed at different speeds.
Here is my question. Which option is the lesser of two evils? Is it better to boot from a flash drive or boot from the same drive as captured media?
Is there any way to have 2 copies of itunes running at once so that I can have different music playing through my airport express then I have playing through my computer? I'm running Leopard if that makes a difference.
Is it possible to have one computer with time machine, but doing two diferents copies of it in two different hard disks. But I want to do the same copy, in two hard disks. Can it be done.
I am new to Mac and was using AnyDVD and CloneDVD to back up my DVD library. They do not make software for the Mac so I was wondering if you guys could make recommendations for programs that will allow you to make backup copies of DVD's for home use.
EDIT: I did do a search but the most recent discussion about this is almost 4 months old so I just wanted to see if there was anything new.
Does anyone know how to change the way OS X copies images when you drag them?
When the images are equal to or smaller than 1024x768, you the standard small ghost image that follows the cursor until you release to copy. But, if you're doing the same thing with images that are equal to or smaller than 1600x1200, then see a jpeg file icon instead of the ghost image.
What I'd like to do is to change it to always show the file icon when dragging to copy instead of the smaller image. Being able to toggle back and forth would be nice.
I can't seem to be able to print multiple copies of a document in Leopard. I've tried 3 different network printers (2 windows printers, 1 direct IP printer) using 3 different MacBooks. All running 10.5.1. It'll print 1 copy just fine, but that's it. If you want multiple copies you have to keep sending it to the printer, which is a pain.
Can anybody try printing 2 or more copies with a local printer and see if that works? I think I may have found my first truly annoying Leopard bug
i discovered that if you modify a photo, iPhoto makes a copy of it somewhere in its library (and on your hard drive). Does anyone know how to prevent iphoto from doing this? If i modify a photo, I just want it to overwrite the original (and not waste disk space).
I am a Mac user and I'm totally addicted to Pages '09. I am currently writing my thesis in Pages and I am strongly considering leaving Word aside. My only problem lies with safety copies: I am the only Mac user in my house and I'm afraid that if something happens to my computer I will be unable to use the .pages files in my Macbook because the damned Word processor is unable to read them. Using the export function is not very useful because this would oblige me to maintain hundreds of copies of my files.
Are there any Windows programs that can convert .pages to .doc? This way I could ask my Parents to install it in their PC and I could go there with my external disk in case anything happens (knock three times). Alternatively are there any Windows word processors that can read pages files?
digital copies have an expiration date (most of them anyway) & I really don't have much space on my computer to fit all the movies (I think I'm literally down to 3GB). So am I able to download the digital copy to my Mac, delete it from iTunes & the computer to free up the space & then re-download at a later date as long as I'm using the same iTunes login? Also, would this work if I got a new Mac & tried to re-download to that?
I do the Time machine daily on an external Hard Drive.I´ve must had done something wrong, because suddenly my Mac did the security copies on the internal Hard Drive and I cannot erase them.
Just got my new mac and im having a bit of trouble with itunes. I transfered my music over from my PC and now whenever I add music to itunes on my mac it makes doubles of those any songs I put in.
Is there a (preferably free) application that will burn exact copies of DVD's. I know theres the Mactheripper which excracts the dvd but you have to convert it and use a bunch of other applications to get in onto a DVD. Is there a free DVD coping program out there for a mac?
I have noticed that when Mail is downloading my new email, and I look at the "Mail Activity" box in the lower right corner of the application, it seems to be downloading double the mail I am seeing. For instance, if I see 6 new emails, there will be a blue bar and the message "downloading X of 12 messages" as they come in. It doesn't seem to happen with my Mobileme account, just with my IMAP account from GoDaddy. Only the correct number of messages appear visible in my Inbox. I deal with large files on a regular basis, I really don't want my storage to double, and it just seems like something is wrong that should be fixed.

When you compose a Mail message, if you double-click the send button it sends TWO copies of the mail? I just sent someone a message, and my hand accidentally clicked the mouse twice when I hit send. I heard two whooshes and saw two message windows briefly appear. And sure enough, two copies listed in the Sent folder. I thought I'd sent an earlier draft which was sitting behind the first message. But no -- I tried it again with a new message to myself. And I received two mails.
