OS X :: USB Drives, Multiple File System Partitions & Interoperability

I'm having trouble with getting Windows to understand the partition structure of my USB drive. I formatted it into 3 partitions: One HFS+, the second FAT, and the third also FAT. For some odd reason, though, Windows refuses to recognize the FAT partitions and mount them, ignoring the HFS+ partition it doesn't recognize in the process. Instead, what it's doing is mounting only the FIRST partition on the drive, ignoring anything else there - even if said partition is the GPT protective partition. I'm understandably baffled by this.The reason I'm doing this is to make a "universal" development drive. I tried formatting the whole drive as FAT, which sort of works (my IDE loads from the drive okay, but refuses to update itself, complaining that the profile is in use, only tested on the Mac side). So, I came up with what I thought was the brilliant idea of mixed filesystem partitioning to work around the issue... but of course that doesn't work either.

I have searched but I can't seem to find an answer to this question...
I have 4 x 500MB drives in my Mac Pro and 4 x 500MB external firewire drives.
Currently I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone each internal drive to it's respective backup. ie Drive 1 > Backup 1, Drive 2 > Backup 2 etc
Is it possible to use Timemachine in a similar way? so that each internal drive has it's own corresponding Timemachine backup?

Basicly i thought the best way to explain my hard drive layout is with a picture.So thats how its layed out, basicly i want my macbook to be backed up, but then i also want to have certain things stored off the laptop, but i dont want to lose them through a drive faliure. So i want a 250GB partition from one drive to be completly backed up by another 250gb drive. How could i do this? RAID? or some sort of mirror thing? or can u get a back up program that will automatic do it daily? Does time machine do this kind of thing?I aslo dont mind if they are both plugged into the macbook through cables, or the 250gb drive in connected to the 1tb drive, which is then connected to the macbook, like a daisychain?

I currently have a 250gb hdd with lion and a bootcamp partition of windows 7.
I would like to upgrade my hdd because I am running out of room. Â
I understand that I could most likely back up the entire drive to an external, then install the new hdd and reinstall the backed up data. That should put both partitions the way they were onto the new hdd. At least that is what I think.Â
But I would like to have a bigger partition for windows and I am unsure how I would do this correctly. I don't know if reinstalling the backed up data to the new drive, deleting the bootcamp partition, then creating a new partition and reinstalling my same windows would work. Would I even be able to install windows a second time on the same computer without having to buy another key?Â
Final thoughts:
1. Will backing up the entire drive to an external, then install the new hdd and reinstall the backed up data put both partitions the way they were onto the new hdd?
a. Will the OSX partition get all the new space?Â
2. How do I get a bigger windows partition on the new hdd, while keeping all of my existing windows content? Â

I am not sure if there is anything I can do, but here is my situation.Boot Camp will not install if my main hard drive which contains OSX has more than 1 partition on it. I have previously successfully installed boot camp before but recently have reformated and repartitioned my drive into multiple sections, One for the OSX and one for Multimedia, Movies Music and pics.Now Boot camp is telling me, Boot Camp cannot install because your primary drive is partitioned.So My prediciment is this. I want boot camp, because I need windows for games... no problem. However I need an extra OSX Journaled Partition for my Music and stuff, because I do not want this on my OSX partition. what can I do? before I reformat again

I purchased my mac from a friend of a friend a while back. It runs great and there are just a few custom things the previous owner did that have not caught up to me: the available disk space in Leopard is almost completely used up. There are two other drives (or partitions I believe they are called), each of which has roughly 25GB available. Does anyone know how I can get this free space in the other partitions transferred to my main leopard os?

been trying to set up something like this under bootcamp butgetting nowhere. even lost half of my mac hd in the process.support couldn't get disk utility to recover it. finally got itback with a linux live disk called 'parted magic.' that allowedme to delete the ntfs partitions and leave them as free space. once i'd done that disk utility could then resize the mac hdpartition to the whole disk and i was able to start over.can a partition scheme as i've described above be done on a mac?

for various reasons, I've got three windows partitions on my Mac Pro. 1 x XP, 1 x Vista and 1 x 7. The annoying thing is, when I hold 'alt' to get into one of them, they all show up as 'Windows' (ie, OSX, Windows, Windows, Windows as my choice). A smarter man would remember, or write down what's what - but I'm wondering (as I'm not smarter) if there's a way to rename how they appear in this startup point. I've renamed the drives on the desktop so I know what's what - but it'd be nice to be able to change the startup option too.

I am looking at the WD MyBook Studio Edition II 2 TB and have some questions I need answered before getting it. Perhaps someone who uses it with their mac knows the answers.I want to use it with the RAID1 configuration. Just a quick rundown of what I'm trying to do here:I have a 1 TB external USB SimpleDrive hard drive that is currently partitioned into three partitions, two formatted with FAT32 and one formatted with HFS+ for Time Machine. I learned how to enable Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard's NTFS read-write capability today and so I no longer need to keep my first two partitions as FAT32 (especially since I have files larger than 4 GB I would like to store on them). I have data on the first FAT32 partition that I would like to transfer to the second FAT32 partition once I have reformatted it as NTFS whereby I will then be able to reformat the first FAT32 partition to NTFS without losing my data.I have nothing important on the second FAT32 partition, but when I opened Disk Management in Administrative Tools in Windows 7, I found that the second FAT32 partition is currently set as the active partition of that volume. I have a macpro setup with two partitions.Originally one partition assigned to Snow Leopard.I log in using a network user (using OSX server) and that user has local Admin rights.I setup a new instance of Snow Leopard on the secondary Partition and logged in using the network user.This had the effect of using the partition 1 Home directory for this user and I can't get the secondary partition to use itself for storing the users home directory.The workaround I have is to log in to Partition 2 snow leopard with a local admin user then temporarily rename the Users folder on partition 1. Next login to partition 2 as the network user, then everything gets created on partition 2 as expected.Finally rename the Partition 1 Users folder back.Now I can log in to either partitoin with the same user and have different local home setups.
Anyone else had this or is there a better procedure for setting up multiple partitions? The same happens with LION. I need to keep a snowleoapard partition with all the setup I currently have, but start a new LION partition.I don't want any cross contamination, hence the requirement for separation.

I have a Drobo hung via USB off my airport extreme. When I first connected it, the Drobo was formatted to be 2 tb but has since grown to over 6 tb in capacity. Now, one of the great things about Drobo is whenever you add space, it will partion the drives to give you the additional space, but this only really works if you have it connected to your computer directly.I have close to 6 tb of available space on my drobo, and only about 2 being used. My mac thinks the drobo is full and won't copy to it. Any way to get my iMac or airport extreme to recognize there is actually more space, or partitions?

I need an AppleScript to restore a bunch of partitions from a master drive to a stack of external target drives. I don't mind partitioning them 1st, if necessary.The master drive has 16 partitions, all equally sized, and I'd like a script to run that will have Disk Utility to just go down the list restoring each partition to the matching 16 partitions on one of the target drives.

I just got my first Mac computer (yay), but as I always do with new operating systems, I have already run into a few problems. I tried to use Boot Camp to install Windows XP, and it all went through, but after the installation somehow the XP system was deleted and now I have 2 Mac OS 10 partitions.Um, I'm sorta lost at this point. Since I just got my Macbook Pro today, I don't have any files on it except for 24 music files. I am currently reinstalling the operating system onto the Macintosh HD, but I'm not sure if that will relieve the problem.

i was wondering if the following set up is possible (and if so, how to go about setting it up).
drive 1: my laptop, 120gb. holds all my documents, personal stuff, etc.
drive 2: 500gb wd passport drive. would hold most of my photos, movies, etc. this will come with me along with my laptop
drive 3: 1 tb wd desktop drive. can i back up both drives 1 and 2 to drive 3?

I have a few external drives for my Macbook Pro. One of the drives is an Iomega MaxMini with USB ports on the back to add drives.
My question is; when I hook up the drives to my laptop I get about 4 drive icons on the desktop for each of the partitions, and when I need to remove them I have to eject them or move them to the trash icon.
Is there a way I can put the drives in a folder of some kind that I can just eject and make the desktop look less cluttered?

I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with two internal drives. Last night I experimented with boot camp by partitioning 50gb of my startup drive to test Windows out. Worked beautifully with the exception of lacking in some graphical processing power for some of my editing suites like 3ds max and Maya (taking care of that buy replacing the 5870 with an r9 270x).
I decided that I want to make Windows a permanent useful option on my Mac Pro by providing dedicated drives for it. Specifically, I was wondering if it is possible to install Windows on an ssd and then use another hard drive as storage for Windows. For example, can I use a 128gb ssd for my windows startup partition while using another 1.5tb hard drive for Windows applications and stuff?

Can time machine work on multiple drives?
Currently, I have time machine backing up my iMac on to an external drive.
I also have a third drive filled with movies and music. I would like to set iTunes to play directly off of that drive but I don't want to risk losing that stuff.
Can I set time machine to back up my iMac on HD2 AND ALSO back up HD3 to HD4?

I want to get a 2 TB external for BU purposes.

Currently I keep my time machine backup on an external usb hard drive which is a seagate hd in an enclosure I bought a while ago. I want to maintain a second copy of the time machine back up.
Is it better to buy an external RAID enclosure, put the current drive in there, get another drive, and then just have time machine backup to that drive?
Or should I just get another enclosure and another drive? If I do it this way, can I automate the time machine backups across two drives in any way, or I have to manually run it twice?

I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage.So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

I would like to sort out all my drives and keep the organisation simple... it's recently turned into a bit of a mess after my hard drive on the iMac went into melt-down (fixed but having other issues... see other post! ) and as it had difficulty in backing up (for several months!) etc I did a mini panic of just saving my most important stuff on other drives - sometimes it would save on one drive but not other stuff so then had to use another drive etc... I have all my files etc but it's a bit of a mess... sooooooo. I have different things on different drives etc and it would be interesting to see how others organise themselves if they have multiple external drives. Which is best to use for time-machine back-ups and the other to keep all my photo's, videos and general other work on. I would like to keep my computer free of most of my work... maybe just have the current projects kept there. so far I have 53GB of photo's (I dabble in photography and work as a retoucher) I usually keep some original images and then there's the retouched or best images in separate folders. I'm studying digital media as well (BA) and while websites don't take that much space, the 3D stuff did and I've started doing stop motion animation ... then trying out different formats etc I end up with a huge amount of GB used up with .mov files (I'm new to moving images!) I have two desktop Western Digital Studios drives - 1.5TB and 500GB
I did used to just have the 500GB and kept the time-machine/backups on this disc and I recently switched this over to the 1.5TB but I'm wondering if I really need all that space just for back-ups - I can't personally see wanting a back-up from a year ago... a couple of months back maybe so should I switch my back-ups to the 500Gb drive and keep all my images/video/docs etc on the 1.5TB instead? also have 2 Western Digital portable drives - 320GB each. use one for Uni/work which means I can transfer large files to and from work computers to my home computer and I don't have to lug my macbook around ... plus the Uni doesn't have the same software versions as I do and it's easier just to take the files in rather than my laptop etc. I use one for keeping movies on - it's more convenient to keep my DVD films on the drive rather than keep taking dvd's out of the case etc... so my dvd collection is in a box on the wardrobe How do others organise themselves?

First one was a portable 500gb freeagent, and also I put it in a folder in my 1.5tb time machine drive. Tonight I am updating the second, and I think I'm noticing a problem, but not sure. First of all, when I move my library locatation in preferences to the ext. drive in preferences, and do consolidate library the "info" on a few of the songs still shows a filepath leading to the built in hard drive on my mac (the original library). Also, when I perform the Library>consolidate library function it seems like it copies all of the files that are already on the drive, too. So they only appear in itunes once but they appear in the actual folder more than once, in appended form. Anyone else think this is unnormal. How do you manage a library on mulitple drives? The original reason I did this was to clear some space on my macbook's hard drive, but I'm always too scared to delete the files on it.

Here is what I want to achieve: I have my MBP with a 500GB hard drive that I want backed up to an external 750GB drive (A). Then I have an external 1TB drive (B) that I also wanted backed up to an external 1TB drive (C).
Or:
Internal -> drive A
Drive B -> drive C
Can Time Machine do this all for me or am I going to need a 3rd-party app to help. I know I can easily use TM for doing one of the backups, but will it handle both? If not, what's a good 3rd-party app that will help me accomplish this?

Does anyone know if it's possible to have two sets of striped drives using a single hardware RAID controller? I'm looking at the ARC-1210 and it seems like you can have more than one set of striped drives, but I'm not positive. My plan is to have two small SSDs set up for the boot drive and two HDDs for storage, each pair set up with RAID 0. Can this be accomplished using a single controller? Note: I'd just use OS X's software RAID but I need to keep the cores freed up for computation. I'm not concerned with redundancy--just speed.

This is the third drive that has failed since I was assigned this Mac Pro at work a few weeks ago, and the drive was purchased less than a week ago. The other two were older drives. They would suddenly stop being readable. Sometimes there was a problem ejecting the drive before it stopped becomeing readable (message would say the drive couldn't be ejected because another program is using it, when there were no programs open). One of them eventually mounted again and I recovered some of the files (but some files weren't readable when I tried to copy them). But that was just luck as they all seem now to be consistently unreadable. When I plug them in I get the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". same if I plug it into a different computer. And when I try to repair, it shows this: http://i.imgur.com/ivK9d.png. When it happed to the second drive, I just thought it was a fluke... but now a third, brand new drive? Something about the computer must be causing it.
