OS X :: Error Messages With External Drives While Disc Cleanup/how Do I Make That Space Available?

so i have been using pc all my life, but now i have a new macbook and ive been downloading a lot of things. the other day an error popped up and said i was running low on disk space... ive been lazy about "reconfiguring my external hard drive for my mac" like the apple employee told me i needed to do, but i decided i should finally do it to free up space on my computer.
i have a seagate external hard drive and i plugged it into my computer and erased everything on it so i could start using it with time machine. after it started backing everything up an error popped up saying that i only have 2.2 MB available.... so on my system preferences i reconfirmed that it says 2.2 MB of 232.9 GB available. this doesnt make any sense because i just wiped my external drive, plus i didnt have much on it to begin with.
so i guess my question is, how do i make that space available?
also, i mainly wanted to back up all of my documents, music, and movies so that i could delete some movies and documents from my computer that i dont need every day and make space for more, but then when i plug my ext hard drive back in to my computer, wont it just mirror my computer with time machine and defeat the purpose of storing things on it because they will just be deleted?
i know im lame, but im really trying to get used to my mac which i know is way easier than im making it out to be.
G5 Dual 2GHz 4GB DDR SRAM OS X 10.5.8 - Fans & disc drive motors begin racing during startup stall each time computer is started up from cold start. Restart works fine and everything launches. Mac Mail startup shows beach ball delay of 1 to 3 minutes at each launch. 17.7 GB remaining on HD. Have started from Leopard install disc and run Disk Utility, but receive error message that system cannot repair.Also receive the following continuing System Log info after continuing SyncServer error messages
I am trying to cleanup my mac a little i just cleared safari's history and reset it, now i want to do my whole computer to clean up like hidden files and stuff that might be slowing me down. how do i go about doing this? when i was on pc i used ccleaner but i heard its bad for mac and gives you a virus.

I am trying to create a bootable copy of my mac and would like to include the windows XP partition as well. I am planning to install this copy onto multiple CPU's after I have created it on the external HD. Is there a way to copy both partitions onto the external and what should the formatting look like.
I have a 24" iMac and it was running fine the other week and now I get this annoying error=36 whenever I try to transfer large files from desktop to my external drives. It goes about 1/4 way with the transfers then stops with the error=36 message. I've tried to reset the pram but it won't let me. It just keeps on restarting to the same gray screen with the single short beep tone over and over until I let go of the option, command, P & R buttons and restarts normally but does not reset the pram.
The disc can’t be burned because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x8002006E). I keeep getting this when I try to burn my daughters wedding pic to a dvd.
I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

It's a 1.5TB Western Digital GreenPower WD15EARS with "Advanced Format" and a huge, 64mb Cache. I wasn't intending to get anything special, just more space.
Apparently "Advanced Format" means the drive sectors are 4kb instead of the usual 512b.
This has apparently been in the works for some time but is just now being phased in.
OSX back to Tiger (10.4) supports Advanced Format drives with no issues.
The big hold up has been Windows 5 (XP) and earlier. Using one of these drives with XP could cause a real slowdown unless special precautions are taken.
The drive installed and formatted normally under Snow Leopard. According to AJA System Test, the 5400rpm GP drive is indeed slower than my WD Blacks (duh!) and a 7200rpm Hitachi. I have yet to compare it to one of my external "regular" GreenPower drives by mounting one internally.

I am running my Macbook Pro at work through the LAN. My work has a windows 2003 server. Everything has been fine (well just about) until today, when I couldn't get onto any internet sites. It would let me access all of the local work intranet site, but it wouldn't even let me on google. It worked fine yesterday, and all the Win PCs around me were all still up and running. I tried using a different port but to no avail. Also, I am still trying to access my root drives that are on my profile space at work. e.g R:\Venusgroupswbl etc etc. I want to connect to these through my mac.
Okay, so I check my GMail account 3 places, through the web-based client, my iPhone (IMAP) and Mail (IMAP). Everything works perfectly except for the fact that when I read an email on my phone or the web-based client, the message stays as unread on the Mail app on my MBP.
The read message syncing works perfectly between the iPhone and web (i.e., if I read an unread message via the web it will be marked as read on the phone the next time the phone talks to the server and vice versa). However, it just doesn't work like this on the Mail app on my computer. If I read a message on the iPhone the message will stay marked as unread on the Mail app until I click on it.
Basicly i thought the best way to explain my hard drive layout is with a picture.So thats how its layed out, basicly i want my macbook to be backed up, but then i also want to have certain things stored off the laptop, but i dont want to lose them through a drive faliure. So i want a 250GB partition from one drive to be completly backed up by another 250gb drive. How could i do this? RAID? or some sort of mirror thing? or can u get a back up program that will automatic do it daily? Does time machine do this kind of thing?I aslo dont mind if they are both plugged into the macbook through cables, or the 250gb drive in connected to the 1tb drive, which is then connected to the macbook, like a daisychain?
I'm wondering if there is a way (and room) to replace the standard drive with 2 hard drives. I was thinking something like a 128G SSD and then the biggest notebook drive I can get (7200rpm).
The SSD would be the primary drive and should just scream.
I am on the latest 10.10.1 Yosemite, but this problem has happened to me on previous operating systems. On my dock I have a red bubble that says I have unread messages waiting. When I go to messages, I have no unread items. I even went as far and deleted every single conversation. The bubble went away but returned quickly.

I am having difficulty burning a dmg file to a blank disc. I have a macbook pro with OS X 10.5.8. I am using disk utility to attempt this feat but it is being difficult. The blank disc is a 702 MB and the image is ~540 MB. When I attempt to burn the image onto the blank disc, it says the disc inserted does not have enough free space. 1) The disc is blank. 2) The image is less than the capacity of the disc. I tried another blank disc and it still reports the same issue. The blank discs work just fine in Windows and it reports it as such. Why is Mac OS reporting there is no free space when, in fact, there is?
I have an Ibook G4, and it has great to me until i downloaded a few movies this week. My mistake. So the two major problems I now have is, that its telling me I am out of space on my disc, and the computer does not shut down properly, making me have to force quit everything and hold the power button in until it shuts off. I have checked disk utility, and verified disk option, and it says there is a volume problem and and exiting problem. I ran a free virus scan on my hard drive, but it says there are no viruses and no corrupted files. I dont know what to do anymore.
I am trying to free up disc space. I have a file i my home folder called migrated PC files, which contains a subfolder called cDrive files. I assume this is a leftover from my old Dell from 2007. Can I delete this file?
Over the past few days, I've been pruning my hard drive of excess files and moving many of them to external hard drives. My machine is a year-old Macbook Pro. Even after removing over 100GB of files from my 750GB internal hard drive, the info pane for my hard disc still tells me I have only about 60GB of free space.I have been using Disc Inventory X to find files and get rid of them. My latest scan of my HD with this program yields 450GB of actual files stored on my computer, yet the info pane for my HD (powered by Finder) is still telling me I have about 76 GB free. Does anyone have any ideas for how this discrepancy could exist? If the actual files on my computer only come to 450GB, how can I free up the remaining 250GB of space that seem to be missing?
On my previous OS version I simply clicked the activity monitor to see how much disc space was used and how much was available? I can't find that function now.

I have a MacBook Pro 10.6.8. I work with a lot of large files. When I'm done, I transfer these large files to an external hard drive, erase them from my lap top, and at least once a day, restart my computer, allowing for the formerly used disc space to be recovered. I occasionally will run ONYX and restart the computer, this also recovers lost disc space. Usually after restarting my computer there is between 100-150 GB of available space. My problem now is the space is not coming back. I'm down to 45 GB. Trash is empty. I've cleaned with ONYX, but the space is not recovering.
