OS X :: Noticed When The Computer Is Idle (black Screen), Wired Mouse Does Not Work?
Jan 2, 2011
I recently purchased a refurbished 24 inch imac from the noticed when the computer is idle (black screen), my wired mouse does not work. When I pull the cable out of the usb port on the imac, the computer screen comes on and then I reinsert the cable back into the usb port in the computer to use the wired mouse (wired mouse works fine after I reinsert the cable back into the usb port).Could this problem be associated with the wired mouse or with the usb ports on the imac?

I have a 15'' 2010 macbook pro that I've only owned for about a month and a half. At first the isight camera worked great,I used it multiple times for photobooth. But a few weeks ago I tried to used it for skype and noticed it just showed a black screen. I thought maybe the problem was just with skype, but I started checking other programs and it's the same in all of them. The green light is on and it's recognized in system profiler, but the screen is black.
A few days after this happened, the problem seemed to fix itself, but then it went right back to the black screen 2 days later, and had been that way ever since.
I tried resetting the PRAM, but it didn't help. Is there anything else I can do, or is it time to give in and take my macbook to the Apple store?

I'm having a bit of a problem with my Macbook. Once the display goes to sleep, I can't seem to get the screen to come back. The computer doesn't actually turn off, but when I try to get it back with my mouse it goes black. I can usually still slightly see my applications and stuff, and the fan still runs. I end up having to shut it down and then restart it every time. Just wondering if anybody knows how to fix this.

Recently my Mac Pro has been going to a black screen when idle for a while and I need to power off using the power button and restart. It's not set to ever go to sleep but if I use the sleep function under the Apple, it functions as it should, waking when I touch a key (although I don't let it sit for a while before I wake it). When it is in the black screen mode, it still is performing Time Machine backups.

My Mac Pro has started to go to a black screen when idle for a period of time. When it does this, I need to use the power button to power off and restart. It does not appear to be asleep (I have it set to never sleep) since Time Machine is still backing up and Mobile Me is still syncing. Oddly, if I manually put the computer to sleep (under the apple), it will come back to the normal screen by using a key on the keyboard (moving the mouse does not work) no matter how long I am away.
I have tried resetting, disconnecting and reconnecting all cables but the problem still exists.

I've had my mac for about three years now and everything was working fine. After I installed lion, I notice that this started to happen. I don't lose any of my information though when it does that. It just goes into a sleep mode I guess? Anyways, is this a feature from the lion update? Something standard?

New to Mac computers. When trying to open computer after being in sleep mode, I clicked the mouse to open the password screen, & a blank blue/black screen appeared & the mouse timer( colored circle) appeared, as if to be waiting. I had to unplug the computer to reboot it. This has happened twice in 2 days.

Looking for an alternate wired mouse to the Mighty Mouse thats works flawlessly on a Mac Pro under Snow Leopard. Also an answer from somebody on this who does not get any kernel panics would be good. I ask this because I haveread of somebody who was using a MS mouse which should have worked on a Mac Pro but turned out that the softwareprovided with said MS mouse was calling bad Kernel Extensions and was therefore causing Panics.

I'll try to keep my post short somewhat: I've acquired what appeared to be my most useless piece of equipment: the bluetooth mighty mouse. I am not against wireless stuff per se, I love the keyboard. But the mouse has these annoying problems:
1. Batteries wear out way too fast.
2. Trackball clogs way too easily.
Now I can do without scrolling down, and might clean the thing one day from the insides, but what annoys me is the battery life. And having to buy batteries every other week. A simple workaround would be to buy a cheap wired mouse. But for the sake of thinking about a project, has anyone with some background in electronics tried, or tried to think of the possibility, of modding a mighty mouse and enable it to get some juice through USB?.......................

Computer starts (keyboard lit, music plays, caps lock light on), but no screen. I need to open and close 2 - 30 times before the screen will turn on. Once on, the computer works perfectly. I've tried PRAM and safemode reset.

I have an early 2008, 24-inch iMac. This problem started after I installed an OS X Mavericks update (and has continued). Basically, after the screen is asleep for a while, if you come back and move the mouse / tap the keyboard, the desktop never reappears. The screen stays black but the mouse cursor shows up and you can drag it around. I've seen some similar issues that said they could get the app switcher, but that never happens for me. Just mouse cursor and black screen, no matter how long you try to wait it out or tap buttons. The only solution is a cold restart, although I think in the past I was able to fix by turning off energy saver settings for putting the display to sleep. It doesn't happen every time, I'd say it happens over 50% of the time. The problem actually kicked in with one particular App Store update of Mavericks. I believe it was 10.9.3 if I recall correctly.

When I run the SMC 1.3 update, my computer just stops at a black screen, at which point I have to force shut down the computer and restart it. It then informs me that I need to run the update again.

I was using my MacBook Pro , which I only bought a week ago , when the screen suddenly went black and the computer seemed to power down , when this happened it was on 40% battery , I plugged In the MagSafe it didn't seem to light but when I looked closely it was on but it was very dim and flashing green and orange . When I put my ear to the case I can hear a faint noise.

I just bought a PowerBook G4 off of craigslist today. 1.67GHz G4 processor, 15" screen, etc etc. The battery shows 99%, and when I unplug it I can count one Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi, four.. oops, it's dead. In the menu bar I can see it recognizing that it's switched to battery a split second before the screen goes black.
An excerpt from System Profiler, leading me to believe the battery is fine:
Battery Installed: Yes
First low level warning: No
Full Charge Capacity (mWh): 3615
Remaining Capacity (mWh): 3587
Amperage (mA): 0
Voltage (mV): 12494
Cycle Count: 274

I got my Macbook in January of last year, and things were working (for the most part) fine until earlier today. Currently, I am writing this on my PC.
My screen won't work. It's completely black, and won't show me anything. It's not the brightness - it LITERALLY looks as though it is off. If I hit the volume buttons, I can hear the little noises it makes, and if I just hit the power button and then "enter", it turns off, so I know the display is there, I just can't see it. Even the little light on the front of the Mac (the one this is supposed to blink when it is in sleep mode) won't blink, and remains on when it is closed.
I am beyond frusterated! Can anyone out there help me? It would be GREATLY appreciated.

I was BBMing while trying to plug in my headphones with my pheripherals, and I accidentally pushed it (not very hard) into the USB port. The tip of the headphone jack connected with the little connector ball at the bottom of the USB port. The screen went black and I instantly hit the power button on instinct, so I don't know if it shut off. Did I do something very bad, or is that normal? I'm not sure if that's even considered an electric shock or what.

Everytime I turn it on I get a black box asking to shut down or restart the mac. I have managed to get it to turn on to powersave and managed to update the software. Thought it might help but just made it worse - it won't boot up at all now past an apple symbol with a little swirly thingy underneath (I apologise now for my lack of intelligence when it comes to computers/knowledge/names of things!) The first time I managed to boot the computer up it came up with the grey screen and a little folder flashing between a face and a question mark which I assume meant it couldn't find anything but that appears to have gone away now. I bought this computer new from Apple about 2 - 3 years ago and no disks were provided with it.

When I open my macbook, the screen remains black (as though it's in sleep mode). Adjusting the brightness always fixes this problem, but this is a temporary fix. The brightness is not at zero when I adjust it after opening, often I need to dim the screen to reactivate it.
This problem is not: related to *clamshell mode*related to unintentionally dimming the screen. related to any of the settings in the Energy Saving panel in system preferences
Extra info: The computer seems as though it doesn't actually enter sleep mode when I close the computer.I don't think there are any processes running that would prevent sleep mode. I really just want the computer to go to sleep properly when I close the screen and more importantly, that it wake-up when opened, or at least when a button is pushed aside from the brightness buttons.

I've purchased a Mac mini with the Apple mouse (Mighty mouse) and Apple keyboard and I can tell a difference between how tracking speeds on Mac's compared to PC's, in that with a Mac the tracking speed is less linear and slower if the mouse is moved slower and accelerated if the mouse is moved faster. I'm starting to adjust to this change but can you guys tell me what mouse speeds you have set for your mighty mouse and what screen size you have. Just want to see what speeds other people are using on their Mac's.

I have tried the following
- Resetting the pmc.
- Rebooting / shutting down, swapping USB ports.
- Verify HD permissions
- Disabling bluetooth (even tho this is wired usb mouse I've seen people mention this so just before you do!)
- Plugged the mouse into a Windows 7 Machine (sorry its not mine! :-) and YES it works fine!
Also there are no drivers for this 'Imation' wired usb mouse as its plug and play and on the box its states fully supports mac os 10.x brand new.

My macbook is running Mavericks OS X 10.9.4, and I'm having difficulty getting rid of the vertical black columns on my computer screen when it is connected to my classroom projector. I've played with the resolutions, and the best resolution for the VGA display is 1024x768...Unfortunately this creates less than desirable black columns on my computer screen. Another teacher in my school has display settings of "1024x768 stretched," and her macbook does not have the issue mine does. However, I don't think she is running Mavericks 10.9.4. I cannot find this display option on my computer.

I have a 27 inch desktop. Upon turning the computer on within seconds the fan comes on. Then it goes to a high fan. Then it goes to a black screen. Then it shuts off. Then if you click the mouse it will come back on. This cycle repeats itself every 5 seconds. Only one time in the past month did it turn on normally and run for me.
