OS X :: Deleted Files Not Give Space Back On External HD
Mar 19, 2010I have a 500GB external Seagate HD that I have in two partitions, one for Time Machine and one for random media stuff. I was cleaning it out today and realized that when I delete things, it doesn't give me the space back on the hard drive. I've experienced this same problem with a USB drive that I use to transfer files from one computer to another, and it doesn't work unless I use disk utility to "Erase" the drive, then add what I need. I can't afford to erase the drive (not enough room to put it all on the MBP) and am starting to need my space back from the deleted files, how can I do this without ruining the files already on my partition?

Jul 1, 2014I have some photos that won't open because it says 'I Don't have Permission to Access." Out of 700, all in the same folder, only about 200 have this problem. I did the "Get Info" cans changed permission, but I had permission to 'Read and Write' the file. Then I tried letting Disk Utility fix it, but it's not an Apple File so it doesn't touch it. Then I tried the Terminal, but sense it's just in one folder I couldn't figure out how to adjust the one folder. How to regain access to all my pictures? It's on a Macbook Air running Lion

May 10, 2010I am running into "chmodperation not permitted" when I try to change the permissions on my time machine backup manually.
Here is the complete info. I brought a new MacMini server and was trying to copy my music folder from time machine backup(of my MBP) into the Server. From the Server I logged in as root and tried to change the file permissions of the music folder with this command
sh-3.2# chmod -R o+rw Music
It throws the above error.
I don't have my MBP with me to do anykind of stuff. I don't want to install SL on my macmini and restore from time machine bckup. Is there any other way.

MobileMe :: Lacking Permission To Delete Old Sync Files
Jun 25, 2012In preparation for leaving MobileMe, I was clearing out my iDisk. Im noticing there are some old sync files in the Library/Application Support/ that cant be deleted (Contacts, Bookmarks, etc.).Â
I get the error: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."Â
I believe these might be old sync files from back in the .Mac days. Not a catastrophe by any stretch, but I'd like to be able to clear everything out before being completely disconnected from MobileMe if possible.

Feb 24, 2010I am trying to find out how many files I have on my Internal HD so as I can match them to the copied files on my external HD before I re-format to make sure they have all copied.
My external is MS-DOT (FAT32) and the internal OS Extended Journaled giving me a difference of roughly 7GB, I can only bring up the capacity, available and used information.
Intel Mac :: Alarming Number Of Files In Trash?
Feb 13, 2012My computer has been acting strangely so I decided to empty the trash since I hadn't done so in a couple of months. The finder shows 110 "items" in the trash- some of them are folders (some of them iMovie temporary items), so I realize I have more than just 110 to delete. I don't trash many things, and certainly don't use the trash for storage! I was quite surprised and alarmed when the status bar showed over 16,000 items being deleted, so I immediately stopped the process. I then saw the trash included user files (copies?), dated the exact time I started to empty. This, together with the fact that my computer has been flaky at startup, and quite un-mac-like in frequent freezing and other troublesome behavior, had me quite concerned.Â
I asked a similar question over the weekend, but obviously wrote it too quickly and didn't make myself clear, as I only received snarky, unhelpful responses. I would really like some advice here, so I am trying again.Â
I do use Time Machine for backup, I'm hopeful that is the reason for the large number of files (including user files) in my trash, and that it is safe to go ahead and empty the trash. I'd guess that many unnecessary files would be contributing to my initial problems. However, I would feel much better if I had some confirmation from this community. If this is the case, I am also curious if I can change something so that I don't continue to have this many files going into the trash.Â

Jun 17, 2009I'm hoping theres something better than me having to crawl through a huge number of files and folders in order for me to know what I can toss off of one hd because I have another copy on another hd that I want to keep. Everything I accumulated and want to keep, I've saved on one hd and put a backup on another drive. But now I'm trying to consolidate some things and toss other things as well as a lot of new stuff I have yet to backup so its getting mixed up.
So I have a ton of crap and I'm trying to make sure I'm not trashing anything I want by mistake. So I'm finding I have to open multiple windows of my hard drives and go through hundreds of files, one by one, to see if I have a copy on another drive so I can either find the backup copy or if its a single file that I need to make a backup of. So is there any kind of thing where I can correlated, or match up, a large number of files on one drive in spotlight or something, to the same files on another drive instead of doing it one dam file at at time?

May 23, 2010I am having a frustrating time of late with .rar files downloaded from the web. The Unarchiver has served me well for the most part. But of late it has failed to open a number of .rar files correctly. As a result I have tried both MacPAR Deluxe and UnRarX. On occasion MacPAR has done the trick, but very infrequently. The files in question have all opened correctly on a Windows machine using 7-zip so the files themselves are not the problem.

Apr 24, 2012I moved the files from my external hard drive from the back up files made by Time Machine into the trash, as I've always done. This time I get an error message (error code 8003) and am not allowed to move the files back onto the drive or out of the trash, even after changing the permissions. I've searched the support forum for error code 8003, but find nothing that relates to back up files.

Only the number keys on my keyboard are malfunctioning besides the number 0. For example when I press 1 it appears as q1. When I press 2 it appears as w2. Â
I am not sure if I accidentally pressed something on my keyboard that has changed the functioning of my number keys. I've tried fidgeting with the keyboard settings in System Preferences and holding down the f6 key but nothing has worked.Â

Feb 13, 2012(1) How can i have get-info on a folder display the number of files *in* the folder?I do not like having to count them by hand.
(2), how can i get new folders (and other files) to be placed at the bottom of a drive's window rather than off to the right at the top of the window..?
I have hundreds of files on this drive, arranged essentially in a tall column 3 or 4 files wide. I DON'T want new folders (or files that i copy or save to the drive) being placed all the way up at the top, out of view to the right because then i have to drag them all the way down to the bottom. Follow? Yet, this is what OSX is doing (usually).

Since both computers use the same gateway (same external IP address that the internet sees), the payment processor can only process payments from one iMac at a time. Both iMacs cannot run an order at the same time. My question is this: Is there a way to configure the router to give each iMac a separate IP address that the internet sees, so that they can both process orders with the payment processor at the same time? Jun 6, 2009I just don't want to waste too much of my 1TB storage; that my iMac 24" will have - for Windows Boot Camp.
I guess I'll run Vista 32-bit and plan to install three to five games, maybe Unreal Tournament III, Bioshock.. Bioshock 2 when it's released.
So it's basically a Windows Boot Camp for gaming and I plan to uninstall games after I've finished with them.
Mac Pro :: GPU Monitor Application Give Accurate Temperature?
Oct 11, 2009I'm currently using Early 2008 Mac Pro and the ATI HD2600XT which came with it. When I use the ATI utility or GPU temperature monitor apps like GPU-Z on bootcamp (Windows XP SP3), the temperature is about 87C on idle, and goes to like 93C when running benchmark softwares. (I ran the Final Fantasy XI benchmark software). I know this is hot.
Do the GPU temperature monitor apps give accurate temperatures? Or are the temperatures displayed wrong? Because I noticed that the temperature for the CPUs are displayed higher on Boocamp than on Mac OSX.(Used HWMonitor on Bootcamp and Hardware Monitor on Mac OSX). And I have a question for the people who use or have used the Early 2008 Mac Pros and the ATI HD2600XT with it. How are your temperatures?
OS X :: Pink Swirl When Trying To Give Admin Rights?
Apr 30, 20101st time use of the forum, so forgive me if I posted incorrectly.
I'm running MacBook 10.6.3.
I'm trying to change the permissions and password to a user that uses the notebook. When I try to change the permission to "enable admin" it gives me the pink swirl. Only way I can escape is by rebooting.
2ndly, the option to "change password' is not there.
