For some reason, when I try to delete files from my flash drive, the file disappears but I don't get any space back on the flash drive. This is ruining my 32 GB flash drive.

I have a 500GB external Seagate HD that I have in two partitions, one for Time Machine and one for random media stuff. I was cleaning it out today and realized that when I delete things, it doesn't give me the space back on the hard drive. I've experienced this same problem with a USB drive that I use to transfer files from one computer to another, and it doesn't work unless I use disk utility to "Erase" the drive, then add what I need. I can't afford to erase the drive (not enough room to put it all on the MBP) and am starting to need my space back from the deleted files, how can I do this without ruining the files already on my partition?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently got rid of a partition I had made for bootcamp since I never use it, and would rather have the space back. I deleted the partition through disc utility, and then through the partition tab, tried to get back that space by dragging down the tab to restore the space originally set for the partition. When I go to apply this change, it notifies that my hard drive will be re-sized. I accept and then a few minutes later it comes back with the error "Partition failed with the error: Filesystem verify or repair failed" Does anybody know how I can restore this space successfully back into my main hard drive? I moved 200GB of movie files to an external drive then deleted the movie files from my Mac so I could free up the space on the HD. For some reason the HD still shows only 76GB of space available even though the entire movie folder was deleted. Is there something I need to do to get finder to update the GB available?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to free up room on my hard drive. I would like to delete all my .ipa apps. Can I do that? Â I have itunes match, and I also sync to icloud. I know when I want to reinstall an app I just do that through the cloud. I have deleted apps to test that this is ok but the apps end up getting reinstalled. Here is what I want to do:
1. delete all my .ipa files on my computer to save a lot of hard drive space (I have a lot of apps....)
2. stop syncing to my computer, and only sync to icloud
3. rely on itunes match for backing up music
4. have calendar and contacts sync through icloud
5. if I need to reinstall apps do that through the tab on the app store for 'purchases.'Â
I have a flash drive that I use a good bit, but recently it's started doing this thing where it won't eject. Even force ejects hang and I literally have to restart the computer to get the message to go away.
It also has issues deleting files. Perfect example, I just plugged it in, dragged one file to the trash, didn't do anything else, and when I try to empty the trash it says that file is in use when it definitely is not. Then, giving up on that I try to eject the drive and it won't.
I'd say it won't eject about 3/4 of the time. Other drives are fine, so it's not something I'm doing, and it does it on every computer I try, so it's not just my computer in particular.Any ideas what might be causing this?
I made a partition but delete it now can't add back the space.

I have a 750GB internal HD but film a lot of movies. To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive. I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info. I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.Â

Not sure, but for some reason my mac hard drive has got to be 95% full. I know where all the things I put on my laptop are and have added them up and they do not equal up to 132 GB of space. I have deleted the Previous Systems folder which was taking up a lot of space. Where are there more mysterious locations that are taking up space that are not needed and safe to delete?

I MTR'd them to get the video_TS folders on my desk top, so I could toast them back on to DVDs,
I tought I may as well put them on to my iPhone, so I re-encoded them into MP4 (7x500MB), then copied them into iTunes (again 7x500MB).
I reaslied today that I forgot to turn off Time-machine when I was doing all this and my backup grew by 60 GB!!
MY QUESTION IS:
If I go into Time-machine and track down these video files and "deleate all instances" of them, will it free up the 60 GB on my external drive for Time-machine to be able to back upu more vital stuff?
I've recently switched to a MBP after years using Windows/Linux.
Time Machine sounded ideal but seems to have issues with FileVault (if I wasn't on the same network as the NAS the logout process took >15 minutes, presumably whilst it looked for it).
I'm currently using the bundled Memeo Backup software. It works okay except it doesn't have any way to delete old files from the backup and is rapidly consuming space on the NAS.
I am deleting large amounts of files / directories with 10s of GB of disk usage from my internal hard disk.Then I empty the trash.But I don't get more free space on my hard disk! I am not using File Vault.(I also believe that my file system is not corrupt.) This is quite annoying, since I am still unable to copy stuff on my internal hard disk, but given the amount of files I have just deleted, I should be able to do so.

Im having a problem with my HD on my MacBook Air 2011 with 128Gb SSD and Lion.Â
Since about a month after I purchased my computer, I started to notice low HD space. I started managing it but couldnt keep it with more than 15 Gb of space. I transfered my biggest file, a Parallels Desktop virtual machine to an external HD. I have disabled Time Machine and have removed most of my files from the computer. My User folder barely uses 27 Gb of HD Space. The Get Info shows that I have used 90.84 Gb and have 29.63 Gb Free. But when I try to add all of the folders from the HD (Applications, Library, Syste, Users) it comes with a 42.42 Gb used number.Â
I tried lots of programs like Disk Inventory X, WhatSize, OmniDisk Sweeper, etc, and all come up with an aprox. 43.38 used Gb number, so there is no discrepancy between these programs and what Finder is telling me. Here is a screenshot I took with WhatSize.
Where is the rest of the space going? Im lost on what to do to empty space.
I have a Macbook pro (OSX 10.4.11) and all of a sudden it stopped detecting a fairly new Jump/Flash drive that up until now worked fine. The icon doesn't show up on the desktop or in the Macintosh HD window.
The flash drive has "Dane-Elec" printed on it and is 4GB. I've tried it a number of times and nothing. The drive does still work on other computers, and my usb port is working properly with other devices.
The flash drive doesn't seem to show up in System Profiler and my Disk Utility has been "gathering information" for about 5 minutes now." Everything else is working fine with the notebook.
My startup disc reported it was nearly full. I deleted 170 gbs of i tunes media and documents, and it still reports that my disc is nearly full.

I setup a 40gb partition for window's vista. Since vista is such a hog, I only had about 15gb left. Well, I used all but 2 gb on space for games and MsOffice. So I need to give more space to the partition. My specs are as follows: 160gb hard drive. 2GHz intel core 2 duo. 2gb 1067 MHz DDR3. My startup disk is Macintosh HD. give me a detailed set of instructions or the website you may have gotten it from.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just don't want to waste too much of my 1TB storage; that my iMac 24" will have - for Windows Boot Camp.
I guess I'll run Vista 32-bit and plan to install three to five games, maybe Unreal Tournament III, Bioshock.. Bioshock 2 when it's released.
So it's basically a Windows Boot Camp for gaming and I plan to uninstall games after I've finished with them.
I had downloaded some files to add to an external hard drive, the hard drive was assigned to a pc before adding these files so it wouldn't let me add files from my MacBook..Â
Had a look around online and made some changes (well thats what I thought) and I was able to transfer files form my MacBook onto the external hard drive.Â
What I then figured out was that there was nothing left on the hard drive except for the two file sI just transferred..Â
It turns out I deleted everyting without noticing.
The stpes I followed was to go to disk utility then select the hard drive and click erase (not knowing this would erase evrything).Â
So now I have two files on my hard drive and no idea how to recover the 'delted' files.Â
I tried using Disk Drill, which found the files but then it said I need to buy the full version to recover them.Â
I am wondering if there is any free methods to recover these files at all

I have a Sandisk Cruzer 16GB flash drive, which was working fine for months. It was formatted as FAT32 so I could move stuff back and forth between my tech school computer and my mac. I pulled the files off of it, and put an anti-malware program on it to troublshoot a netbook for class. The size of the drive is now shrinking, down currently to 43.5KB. I have no idea what may be causing it, or how to stop it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to update Aperture, but when I go to the App Store it tells me "All apps are up to date". Â I'm running an iMac, OS 10.6.8, current Aperture version 3.1.3 (latest version stated on App Store as 3.2.3).Â
I've tried downloading the update manually, but the updater doesn't work and tells me my version of the app must be updated through the App Store. (This is especially annoying because I transferred my Aperture Library to a MacBook which has a newer version of Aperture installed and it reformatted my library to a newer version. Now I've copied the library back to the MacBook but Aperture won't open the library because it's a requires the newer version of Aperture!)

I just got a new flash drive and it worked fine on my iMac yesterday, and now suddenly it no longer appears on the Desktop or anywhere else on the computer that I can find. But when I pulled it out of the USB drive, it said the device was not removed properly, so it must have recognized something was connected.

What would be the best way to accomplish this (I'd rather not increase the partition w/ a third party app)? I was thinking the best is to eliminate unnecessary files that I am pretty certain were installed as part of the Vista install so that I can recover as much HDD space on the windows partition as possible, but don't know what I can eliminate safely? I am missing something extremely obvious here? Time machine settings show my flash drive but does not allow me to include it in my back ups...seems strange.
