OS X :: Permission Restrictions While Copying Files From Backup Manually

May 10, 2010

I am running into "chmodperation not permitted" when I try to change the permissions on my time machine backup manually.

Here is the complete info. I brought a new MacMini server and was trying to copy my music folder from time machine backup(of my MBP) into the Server. From the Server I logged in as root and tried to change the file permissions of the music folder with this command
sh-3.2# chmod -R o+rw Music
It throws the above error.

I don't have my MBP with me to do anykind of stuff. I don't want to install SL on my macmini and restore from time machine bckup. Is there any other way.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Copying Data From Clone Backup To Drive - Permission Differed

Mar 25, 2012

I am copying data from a clone backup to another drive. After the copy I looked at the permissions and they are not the same as the source. When checking the source I do not see permissions for my logged in account. When I look at the destination I see Root has read-write permissions. BTW, I also logged in as root do to the copy because I was getting copy errors.

OS X Mavericks :: Copying Files To Another Mac From Time Machine Backup

Jun 4, 2014

I have a MBP, backup to Time Capsule by Time Machine.

I will have a new MBA, I will would like to transfer Photos / Music from MBP to that MBA. MBA will have a different account as MBP has.

I understand it could be as easy as copying whole iPhoto library / Music folder to an external drive or NAS and then copy to MBA. But since I already have everything on Time Capsule, am I able to copy selected files from Time Capsule to MBA directly?

I know Migration Assistant could be able to do that but I also heard Migration Assistant could cause some unexpected issues such as permission conflicts, a new created migration account etc... I cenrtainly don't want to mess up MBA.

So my question, am I able to directly access Time Capsule just like a NAS via Finder from MBA, and drag and drop selected files from MBP's backups? Are MBP's backups visibile to MBA?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Error Occurred While Copying Files To Backup Disc

Skipping all the fine details, my MBP is having insane freezing issues and I need to reinstall Lion ASAP. But I also need to backup my files since I haven't been able to backup in a month. Yet whenever I try to backup, I'm told: The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. While Trying to repair my external drive thinking it was the problem initially, I verified and repaired that disc and still had the problem. I tried verifying/repairing my permissions for my internal drive, and I get these amounts of errors:[URL]. No idea what these mean.

OS X Mavericks :: Copying Time Machine Backup

Jun 4, 2014

I'm transferring Bacckups.backupdb to a new external hardrive - however, when I copy over the file structure is disrupted

So on the original drive everything is correct file structure... Backups.backupdb/MyMacbookPro/x14 dated folders

After copying to a new drive 3 of the dated folders are in the correct place and the other 11 (including 'Latest' folder) are sitting in the directory above

like this Backups.backupdb/MyMacbookPro + x11 dated folders/x3 dated folders

When opening up Time Machine it only sees those 3 dates and there seems no way of transferring the folders ...

Software :: Files Disappearing After Copying / Newly Copied Files Missing From New Location

Dec 25, 2010

This only happens when she copies files between internal hard drives. After copying the files, she verifies that files exist in both locations. She then deletes the files in the old location. Then, newly copied files are missing from the new location.

I've never heard of this happening before, except for with improperly unmounted external drives. I have run disk utility and verified that there are no problems with either drive.

IMac :: Stop Downloading Files/copying To Clipboard And Saving Files To Desktop?

Nov 29, 2009

Why does my mac stop downloading files, copying to clipboard, saving files to desktop, etc?

iMac g5 1.9 ghz 17" running 10.5.8. Had a hard drive crash and bought a new one. Loaded new OS leapord. Everything works fine at first, but after the computer has been on for a while, it will stop downlading files, disk verify doesn't work. I can't copy and paste stuff. It seems as if the hard drive is full, but I have only used 32GB of 300GB.

When I restart, it works again, then slowly not. Is it an overheating issue? How do I know if my fan is running? Is it a bad hard drive I put in it? Bought it new with three year waranty.

Software :: Files Disappearing While Copying / Newly Copied Files Missing From New Location

Jul 2, 2009

On several separate occasions, one of our users has had trouble with files "disappearing."

Could anyone help explain why this is happening or how to prevent it?

OS X :: Manually Sorting Files In Mac?

Jun 20, 2010

This may sound like a silly question, but I would like to know how I can arrange files manually in Mac? For example, if I have a folder of 100 photos in running order and I want to move London3.jpg between London 1.jpg and London 2.jpg, how do I do that? I've tried all the different sorting/viewing options. This is a very basic feature in Windows but I can't seem to do it in Mac. I am using Snow Leopard v 10.6.3. am getting very frustrated trying the various options to no avail.

I have some photos that won't open because it says 'I Don't have Permission to Access."  Out of 700, all in the same folder, only about 200 have this problem.  I did the "Get Info" cans changed permission, but I had permission to 'Read and Write' the file.  Then I tried letting Disk Utility fix it, but it's not an Apple File so it doesn't touch it.  Then I tried the Terminal, but sense it's just in one folder I couldn't figure out how to adjust the one folder. How to regain access to all my pictures?  It's on a Macbook Air running Lion

ITunes For Mac :: How To Manually Add PDF Files To IBook

Dec 6, 2014

I manually manage my videos and music.  I don't want to sync.  However, when I try to add books to my iPhone using iTunes 12, the only option I have is to sync and then an iTunes window opens up and says that I will lose all of my music and videos on my iPhone if I sync.  I don't mind syncing my iBooks, but I don't want to be forced to sync my music and videos as well.

There is no book tab in iTunes 12.

Any other way to add iBooks to an iPhone and iPad manually.

There is no option in the iBooks application to add books to an iPhone or iPad that I can find.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Manually Arranging Files In Finder?

Jun 5, 2012

I have a folder with many pictures in it. Right now, they are in a list sorted by name:

Pic A

Pic B

Pic C

Pic D

I would like to manually re-arrange a few so that it looks like this:

Pic A

Pic B

Pic D

Pic C

However, Finder won't let me take them out of their arrangement. When i try to drag a file down, it just snaps back to its original position.

I've set it as Arrange by-none and sort by-name, so shouldn't this let me move them?

OS X Mavericks :: How To Manually Move Mail Files

Aug 28, 2014

My desktop system (an i3 running Mavericks) will not boot from its internal disk (it simply sits "spinning" its little progress bar at the Apple icon). It also fails to recognize an attached disk that has the Time Machine backups in Recovery mode.

Migration Assistant is worthless. I get part way through (specifying a different user as a destination with the i3 disk mounted in Target disk mode) , it exits, and nothing has changed.

Yet I can mount the iMac desktop and its disks on a laptop (also running Mavericks) in Target disk move, and see all the files on both disks. I have copied some, and they seem to be intact.

So, while I ponder this confusion, I would like to get the most critical info off and onto the laptop. One of those pieces of info is the email contents.

Now Mail files "were" in the users Library as I recall, but I believe things were moved in Mavericks (or maybe even a version earlier).

Does any one have ( and I remember seeing this posted somewhere online, but just can not find it) the steps to manually move the mail folders over to a new machine so that nothing is lost with the most recent Mail file locations?

OS X :: Can I Manually Drag Back Files From Time Machine

Jun 1, 2010

I'm planning to reinstall Snow Leopard. I'm using Time Machine. I want to avoid automatic solutions like "Restore from Time Machine backup" and the Migration Assistant because I want to make sure my system stays clean.

This is how I imagine it:I boot my freshly installed system, plug in my Time Machine external drive, open it with Finder and start dragging back all the stuff I need (Photos, Music and Documents) just as if it were a regular external hard drive with files on it. Then I will reinstall all applications manually.

Will this work? Please tell me if you have ever tried this and whether it worked. Will this not cause problems with permissions or anything like that?
