I am trying to find out how many files I have on my Internal HD so as I can match them to the copied files on my external HD before I re-format to make sure they have all copied.
My external is MS-DOT (FAT32) and the internal OS Extended Journaled giving me a difference of roughly 7GB, I can only bring up the capacity, available and used information.
I want to analyse record types from a large input file and so far have managed to extract different groups and created the relevant files. All I want to do now is count the number of records in each file so I can produce a report showing the different types but cannot figure out how to do this, I know it will be simple but I cannot get any command to accomplish this

I am needing to replace the bottom case of my late 2006 MBP. It has a large dent in it that is causing some problems. My question is, do I need to get the exact part number listed on the bottom of my laptop (A1211) or can I get a bottom from any pre-unibody MBP i.e. A1260? Also, has anyone ever replaced this part? How difficult is it? I have experience working on laptops, I've just never taken a mac this much apart.

View 11 Replies View RelatedMy computer has been acting strangely so I decided to empty the trash since I hadn't done so in a couple of months. The finder shows 110 "items" in the trash- some of them are folders (some of them iMovie temporary items), so I realize I have more than just 110 to delete. I don't trash many things, and certainly don't use the trash for storage! I was quite surprised and alarmed when the status bar showed over 16,000 items being deleted, so I immediately stopped the process. I then saw the trash included user files (copies?), dated the exact time I started to empty. This, together with the fact that my computer has been flaky at startup, and quite un-mac-like in frequent freezing and other troublesome behavior, had me quite concerned.Â
I asked a similar question over the weekend, but obviously wrote it too quickly and didn't make myself clear, as I only received snarky, unhelpful responses. I would really like some advice here, so I am trying again.Â
I do use Time Machine for backup, I'm hopeful that is the reason for the large number of files (including user files) in my trash, and that it is safe to go ahead and empty the trash. I'd guess that many unnecessary files would be contributing to my initial problems. However, I would feel much better if I had some confirmation from this community. If this is the case, I am also curious if I can change something so that I don't continue to have this many files going into the trash.Â

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm hoping theres something better than me having to crawl through a huge number of files and folders in order for me to know what I can toss off of one hd because I have another copy on another hd that I want to keep. Everything I accumulated and want to keep, I've saved on one hd and put a backup on another drive. But now I'm trying to consolidate some things and toss other things as well as a lot of new stuff I have yet to backup so its getting mixed up.
So I have a ton of crap and I'm trying to make sure I'm not trashing anything I want by mistake. So I'm finding I have to open multiple windows of my hard drives and go through hundreds of files, one by one, to see if I have a copy on another drive so I can either find the backup copy or if its a single file that I need to make a backup of. So is there any kind of thing where I can correlated, or match up, a large number of files on one drive in spotlight or something, to the same files on another drive instead of doing it one dam file at at time?
I am having a frustrating time of late with .rar files downloaded from the web. The Unarchiver has served me well for the most part. But of late it has failed to open a number of .rar files correctly. As a result I have tried both MacPAR Deluxe and UnRarX. On occasion MacPAR has done the trick, but very infrequently. The files in question have all opened correctly on a Windows machine using 7-zip so the files themselves are not the problem.

Only the number keys on my keyboard are malfunctioning besides the number 0. For example when I press 1 it appears as q1. When I press 2 it appears as w2. Â
I am not sure if I accidentally pressed something on my keyboard that has changed the functioning of my number keys. I've tried fidgeting with the keyboard settings in System Preferences and holding down the f6 key but nothing has worked.Â

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased two 2GB memory modules from OWC to upgrade my MacBook 2.4 Core 2 Duo. The memory arrived and I verified the packing slip matched what I had ordered. The install went smoothly. Upon turning on my Mac, instead of booting up I got a gray screen and 3 repeatable beeps. These sounded like "warning alerts", so I immediately shut down and tried to power up again - with the same result. I reopened my Mac and confirmed everything was done correctly by popping out the sticks and re-inserting to make sure the modules we're properly seated. Turned on the machine and got the same thing. Nervously, I re-installed the factory modules and (thankfully) my Mac booted up just fine. So does this mean that the memory I received is DOA? Is there anything else those 3 warning beeps might have been indicating? I'm 99 percent sure the memory I received is matched for my machine, so all I can assume is that it's faulty? Can anyone verify my assumption before I contact OWC to help me rectify the situation?

I no longer use iWork and i want to sell it on eBay, but when i was looking over the documents that came with it I noticed it had a product key included. Now I didn't think I ever put a product key in when I initially installed it so I tried installing it on my newer macbook (not the same macbook as it was originally installed on) and it never prompted me for a product key. I want to sell this copy and i'm pretty sure the key has never been used, but how do I find out if it has? Is it fine to sell to someone? If it doesn't prompt me for a key, does it mean it wont prompt them?

I've noticed that when changing the size of my partitions with Disk Utility, the size of the partition actually ends up being .12GB smaller than what I set it to be. So if I type 300.00 in, the partition ends up being 299.88. If I type 300.12 in, it ends up being 299.88. If I type 300.13 in, it ends up being 300.01. If I type 360.12 in, it ends up showing 360.00 in Disk Utility, but on the desktop when I have show item info turned on it says 359.99GB.
