OS X :: Connecting Macs To Share Resources?

Jan 27, 2010

My friend was having some issues with an old mac of his, so he bought a new one. He said that when he connected the two macs to move files from the old one to the new one, something weird happened. Te new one found the processor and ram from the old one and used it as its own resources.

I have lost contact with this guy so i have no way to find out how this was done. I think he said he used a firewire cable between the two macs but am not sure

does anyone know how to do this? I dont think it was xgrid cause it worked with all programs and could see the processors in activity manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hardware :: Using Time Capsule To Share XP Workgroup Resources

Oct 17, 2009

I run a windows XP workgroup network in my office and plan to use a mac mini as a file server, coupled with a Time Capsule to use as back up and to provide wifi access to several PC laptops. My question is, will the Time Capsule allow the PC laptops wireless access shared files and printers hosted by other PCs in the workgroup, as opposed to printers connected to the Mac Mini/Time Capsule?

OS X :: How Do I Share Between Two Macs On The Same Wireless Network?

Mar 4, 2009

This is probably very basic but I don't know how to do it.I have an iMac (2007) running Leopard. I have an iBook (2004) running Tiger. They both share my home wireless network.

How can I best share documents between them? Eg how can I browse the hard drive of each machine from the other- ideally without entering passwords etc every time?

Additionally, the iMac is connected to the printer (because it is also a scanner); can the iBook share the printer too?

OS X :: Share External Drive Between 2 Macs

Apr 8, 2009

Ok, was excited to get a refurb Mini today to setup as a Media Center using Boxee. I've got a 1TB WD External Drive used to store all my media, and I figured sharing that drive between the Mini and my Blackbook would be a cinch. WAY not the case. Both computers are running 10.5, fully updated.

These are the steps that I thought it would involve:
- Connecting the Drive to the Mini
- Turning on File Sharing
- Adding the specific folders on the Drive I want shared, and setting permissions accordingly
(Don't know if its relevant (or a stupid idea regardless), but I have the same user name and password setup on both of these machines as the admin)
- Connecting to the Mini in Finder on the Blackbook..............

Applications :: Two Macs To Share One ITunes Library?

May 14, 2010

I have two Macs, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini.I have all my music on MacBook Pro. I want to be able to access iTunes from Mac Mini. But I don't like Home Sharing, because it doesn't really sync my music, and that route keeps two separate libraries.

When I'm home, both Macs are connected to the same network. I want my Mac Mini to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library, update new music from Mac Mini which gets reflected on MacBook Pro. So that if I consolidate the file from Mac Mini, it gets put into the hard drive of MacBook Pro.

I understand what I'm trying to do, doesn't actually put physical files on Mac Mini. If MacBook Pro is not in the network or is turned off, that I wouldn't be able to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library.

I don't want to use any third party applications to "sync" my music. I want to be able to do it by using File Sharing and such.

Mac Pro :: Can I Connect Two Macs To Share Wireless Internet Access?

Aug 28, 2006

I'm sure this has been posted, but my search pulled up hundreds of threads. After I scanned the first 50, I decided to just post my question.

I have to wait a few days (at most) for my job to register my MAC address so that the new Mac Pro has access to the network/internet via ethernet. It does not have an Airport card or Bluetooth. While I am waiting, is there a way to connect the Mac Pro to my Powerbook (which has Wifi internet access) such that it can piggyback on the internet connection as a temporary solution?

OS X :: Connecting Two Macs Via Ethernet?

Mar 23, 2009

I have an iMac and a Mac Pro that I frequently connect with a ethernet cable to transfer movies back and forth, When I do this, it messes up the internet connection between the two Macs as well as Windows computers in the house. The internet connection will just stop every few minutes and it takes several clicks to get links to open. If I click on a link once, I just get the spinning wheel and that will keep spinning all night if I let it, same with the Windows computers. Web pages never load up completly, even now there is a blue bar accross the internet address as I am typing this in Safari.

The problem remains for a long long time, even days after I've removed the ethernet cable from the Macs.

The computers are all using WiFi and an AEBS.

OS X :: Unable To Share Files On Two Macs / Some Items Are Locked And Can't Be Modified

Aug 26, 2010

I just setup my new iMac (coming from a PowerMac G5). There is another PowerMac G5 on the same network that is still in use.

With my old setup, I was able to access the other PowerMac computer including all files...I found see, copy, change everything on the other computer. I don't recall how I initially did it but it worked great.

I can't seem to duplicate it on the new iMac. On the PowerMac still in use, it says that Admins are supposed to have total access but my access seems very limited. It will only work for folders that I specifically add in File Share and even then it says some items are locked and can't be modified when I open them on my iMac.

It seems as if I am not gaining access as an Admin but as a regular user. What am I doing wrong here?

MacBook Pro :: Connecting 2 Macs To One Internet Connection?

Jan 9, 2011

My notebook is about to arrive and I'm trying to learn how to connect two macs to a single internet connection. I'm starting from scratch, really -- I'm learning what a router / switch / ethernet are! Ideally, it would be nice if I could keep my existing cable connection to my Imac and install a wireless connection to my notebook. But I don't know if it is possible and how to do that. I've not found clear advices on such installation, yet. Also, since I'll move in June, I searching for the cheapest solution.

OS X :: IMacs Finder Crashing Repeatedly When Connecting To SMB Share?

Feb 8, 2010

I currently have about 8 iMacs in our lab on OS X 10.5.8 with all of their updates. When attempted to reach an SMB share on a Windows 2008 server by way of smb://10.x.x.x each mac starts to error. It reaches the server and asks for their login, but after the correct info is inputted the mac starts to act up. The apple menu disappears and so does every icon on the desktop. The finder navigator becomes inaccessible and you aren't really able to do anything until the computer is forced to shut down by holding down the power button. I turned on Activity Monitor and then tried to connect to a server and saw that the processes Finder and ReportCrash both appear and then disappear about every 15 seconds or less. Over and over again with no popup reporting the crash to the user.

Remote has been configured via a command line found in an other discussion in this board (Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?. Connecting via the RealVNC App is super fast (like 5 sec).configuration was exactly the same in Mavericks and it worked well and fast !

Limiting Resources To Apps In Mac OS X

May 23, 2012

To reduce the signal to noise ratio, please do not respond to this post asking questions of why I want to do this or with opinions about the validity of the task.I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro Core i5 and I am consistently enraged that a computer this powerful is always lurching along when I am trying to do multiple things at once.I would like to limit the amount of RAM/CPU available to applications on a systemwide basis. All mobile OSes institute this policy (except for Android and its runaway memory munching) and this is what makes those system react so quickly.I know about nice and freezer but these solutions require constant tweaking for each process run. I would like a solution that is applied to every process, systemwide, if that is possible.

OS X :: Leopard Or Tiger (Less Resources) Better For Pro Audio?

Mar 11, 2009

I'm picking up two laptops next week and am wondering if there will be much of a performance difference between leapord and tiger. One Laptop will be a G4 1.33ghz with 1gb of ram. I hope for this to run the midi tracks to control lights on stage and the backing audio tracks(roughly 15 audio files running at once). The other will be a macbook pro 2.0ghz (core duo) with 2gb of ram. This will run the live VST synthesizers(no more than 2 at a time) through my sequencer (cubase or maybe a mac alternative). I'm thinking it would be easier to just have leapord on both machines but I may need to squeeze everything I can get out of the G4. Is their a performance difference or does one OS take more resources?
