OS X :: Share External Drive Between 2 Macs

Apr 8, 2009

Ok, was excited to get a refurb Mini today to setup as a Media Center using Boxee. I've got a 1TB WD External Drive used to store all my media, and I figured sharing that drive between the Mini and my Blackbook would be a cinch. WAY not the case. Both computers are running 10.5, fully updated.

These are the steps that I thought it would involve:
- Connecting the Drive to the Mini
- Turning on File Sharing
- Adding the specific folders on the Drive I want shared, and setting permissions accordingly
(Don't know if its relevant (or a stupid idea regardless), but I have the same user name and password setup on both of these machines as the admin)
- Connecting to the Mini in Finder on the Blackbook..............

OS X :: Two Macs Plugged Into One External Drive

Nov 20, 2009

I'm running SL. I have a MBA, an iMac, and a LaCie external drive. I want to plug the MBA into the USB port on the external drive and the iMac into one of the Firewire 800 ports on the external drive. (On the LaCie, I have two backup partitions for each of the computers -- one for ? backups and one for a CarbonCopy clone of the computers.) When I connect them this way, the iMac can see the drive, but the MBA can't. The MBA will see the drive only if I unplug the iMac from the drive. Is there some sort of trick for getting both computers to see the drive at once? I don't care if they see all four partitions; I'd just like the MBA to be able to see "its" TM and CCC partitions on the LaCie and the iMac to see "its" partitions.

OS X :: Using External Hard Drive To Switch Macs

Sep 29, 2009

I am switching from an iMac to a Macbook. I'll be selling my iMac later. I also have an external hard drive. My iMac and Macbook both have Snow Leopard. So we're good there. With an external hard drive, how do I "switch over" from Mac to Mac? Obviously I won't want to startup from the external hard drive. So just configure Time Machine on my Macbook and restore, just hand-selecting what I want transferred after going through the OS install on my new Macbook? Both computers have a different version of iWork though. So basically, how can I switch all of my programs/files over to my Macbook without overwriting the iWork-related programs? What's the best way? Hand-select Time Machine files/applications?

Software :: Sync Two Macs Using External Drive?

May 10, 2008

I have a Mac at home and one at work. They are both Panthers and about 4 or 5 years old (still run great). The two machines are sort of growing apart from one and other as far as the data contained on each machine. Some is very similar and some isn't. Like I said, they are growing apart. Is there a way I could sync them by using an external drive? I would not want to lose data in the process.

Mac Mini :: Can't Share New External Drive

Jun 14, 2012

We have a Mac Mini which is our media player. I have all the actual media on an external USB drive. The previous drive was failing, so I've now copied everything over to the new drive. The new drive has the same name as the old drive: Media Drive. As far as the Mac Mini itself goes, all is well.

However, we also access the media drive through filesharing from our other Macs. Now with the new drive, it doesn't appear in filesharing. So I went into filesharing. I removed the old Media Drive (it said it couldn't locate it, because of course it's gone). Then I added the new Media Drive. Still it doesn't appear in filesharing.

Intel Mac :: How To Manipulate & Share Pictures From An External Drive On Mac

Jun 25, 2012

I recently got an imac, and I am new to the the mac world but decided I loved my iphone how bad could a mac be? My husband and I each have our computer he has a PC & I have a mac and a PC laptop. We bought an external hardrive to dump all my many many pictures on it.The idea is we will not save anything on our computers but instead work off of the hard drive that is automatically backed up.Ok now that you know the back ground. How can I view pictures from the external hardrive in iphoto with out haveing to make an iphoto library on my external hardrive.I would not mind putting all my pictures in the iphoto library as long as I could view or manipulate the pictures from a PC, does anyone know if this is a possibility? I have asked at the one to one sessions that I paid for but they can't help.  I guess it also hard for them to help when I can't very well be lugging my desk top in and out of the mac store for help.

Any ideas I really like the iphoto tools and it could be very helpfull, but only if it doesn't limit me to always working from my computer.I have great photo editing software on my laptop and want to be able to access the pictures from my laptp edit save and later view from my mac.I found out how to make iphoto open the iphoto library on my external harddrive but I am asking for more.

OS X :: How Do I Share Between Two Macs On The Same Wireless Network?

Mar 4, 2009

This is probably very basic but I don't know how to do it.I have an iMac (2007) running Leopard. I have an iBook (2004) running Tiger. They both share my home wireless network.

How can I best share documents between them? Eg how can I browse the hard drive of each machine from the other- ideally without entering passwords etc every time?

Additionally, the iMac is connected to the printer (because it is also a scanner); can the iBook share the printer too?

OS X :: Connecting Macs To Share Resources?

Jan 27, 2010

My friend was having some issues with an old mac of his, so he bought a new one. He said that when he connected the two macs to move files from the old one to the new one, something weird happened. Te new one found the processor and ram from the old one and used it as its own resources.

I have lost contact with this guy so i have no way to find out how this was done. I think he said he used a firewire cable between the two macs but am not sure

does anyone know how to do this? I dont think it was xgrid cause it worked with all programs and could see the processors in activity manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Applications :: Two Macs To Share One ITunes Library?

May 14, 2010

I have two Macs, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini.I have all my music on MacBook Pro. I want to be able to access iTunes from Mac Mini. But I don't like Home Sharing, because it doesn't really sync my music, and that route keeps two separate libraries.

When I'm home, both Macs are connected to the same network. I want my Mac Mini to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library, update new music from Mac Mini which gets reflected on MacBook Pro. So that if I consolidate the file from Mac Mini, it gets put into the hard drive of MacBook Pro.

I understand what I'm trying to do, doesn't actually put physical files on Mac Mini. If MacBook Pro is not in the network or is turned off, that I wouldn't be able to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library.

I don't want to use any third party applications to "sync" my music. I want to be able to do it by using File Sharing and such.

Mac Pro :: Can I Connect Two Macs To Share Wireless Internet Access?

Aug 28, 2006

I'm sure this has been posted, but my search pulled up hundreds of threads. After I scanned the first 50, I decided to just post my question.

I have to wait a few days (at most) for my job to register my MAC address so that the new Mac Pro has access to the network/internet via ethernet. It does not have an Airport card or Bluetooth. While I am waiting, is there a way to connect the Mac Pro to my Powerbook (which has Wifi internet access) such that it can piggyback on the internet connection as a temporary solution?

OS X :: Unable To Share Files On Two Macs / Some Items Are Locked And Can't Be Modified

Aug 26, 2010

I just setup my new iMac (coming from a PowerMac G5). There is another PowerMac G5 on the same network that is still in use.

With my old setup, I was able to access the other PowerMac computer including all files...I found see, copy, change everything on the other computer. I don't recall how I initially did it but it worked great.

I can't seem to duplicate it on the new iMac. On the PowerMac still in use, it says that Admins are supposed to have total access but my access seems very limited. It will only work for folders that I specifically add in File Share and even then it says some items are locked and can't be modified when I open them on my iMac.

It seems as if I am not gaining access as an Admin but as a regular user. What am I doing wrong here?

Applications :: Store ITunes Songs On External HD Accessed By Two Macs?

Mar 13, 2009

I want to know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it.

Currently, my iMac's HD is overloaded by my 220GB collection (mostly podcasts).

My idea is to have the iTunes collection on an external hard disk (e.g. a Western Digital Passport 320GB).

When connected to the iMac, iTunes on the iMac reads the MP3's from the external disk.

Then, when I'm on the road with my MacBookPro, the MBP's iTunes would read from the same external hard disk.

A problem could be how to make the second MBP recognize any updates to the iTunes list that has changed when used with the iMac since the last hookup.

OS X V10.4 :: Starting From An External USB Storage Device (Intel-based Macs)?

May 31, 2012

I have a 2006 Intel Macbook with a crashed hard drive. I'm kinda broke right now, so instead of buying a new hard drive I loaded ubuntu 10.4 onto an external hard drive (USB) and tried to boot the macbook from it. (Failed). I hold down option to launch Startup Manager and all it shows me is a cursor (no drives). I know the external drive is bootable because I a) booted the laptop from a LiveCD and used it to create the hard drive and b) I booted a Dell from the external. I've tried moving the drive to a different USB port, but no chips. I don't have anything else connected to the computer.

my question is: Can I boot the macbook from the external hard drive if the internal hard drive is shot?

OS X :: Macs Get Slower When Put Hard Drive Like PCs?

Do Macs get slower as you fill the Hard Drive like PCs? The reason I?m asking this question is because I just transferred 40gb of files from my external hard drive (to use this HD with time machine) to my computer so I ended up with 80gb in my MacBook and I?m afraid that this will affect the performance since the HD is only 160gb. This usually happens with PCs.
