Software :: Connecting Two Macs Together For Internet Access
Dec 10, 2008
We have some friends visiting that would like to join our wireless network. We cannot get them logged on because we would need to have our provider add the computer ID# to our account. They are closed today and cannot do it. Is there a way we can connect them to the internet via our macbook computer?
My notebook is about to arrive and I'm trying to learn how to connect two macs to a single internet connection. I'm starting from scratch, really -- I'm learning what a router / switch / ethernet are! Ideally, it would be nice if I could keep my existing cable connection to my Imac and install a wireless connection to my notebook. But I don't know if it is possible and how to do that. I've not found clear advices on such installation, yet. Also, since I'll move in June, I searching for the cheapest solution.
I'm sure this has been posted, but my search pulled up hundreds of threads. After I scanned the first 50, I decided to just post my question.
I have to wait a few days (at most) for my job to register my MAC address so that the new Mac Pro has access to the network/internet via ethernet. It does not have an Airport card or Bluetooth. While I am waiting, is there a way to connect the Mac Pro to my Powerbook (which has Wifi internet access) such that it can piggyback on the internet connection as a temporary solution?
I have an iMac and a Mac Pro that I frequently connect with a ethernet cable to transfer movies back and forth, When I do this, it messes up the internet connection between the two Macs as well as Windows computers in the house. The internet connection will just stop every few minutes and it takes several clicks to get links to open. If I click on a link once, I just get the spinning wheel and that will keep spinning all night if I let it, same with the Windows computers. Web pages never load up completly, even now there is a blue bar accross the internet address as I am typing this in Safari.
The problem remains for a long long time, even days after I've removed the ethernet cable from the Macs.
My friend was having some issues with an old mac of his, so he bought a new one. He said that when he connected the two macs to move files from the old one to the new one, something weird happened. Te new one found the processor and ram from the old one and used it as its own resources.
I have lost contact with this guy so i have no way to find out how this was done. I think he said he used a firewire cable between the two macs but am not sure
does anyone know how to do this? I dont think it was xgrid cause it worked with all programs and could see the processors in activity manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you all probably have heard by now, some schools that give computers to students have been accessing the cameras in Macs to spy on the people using them. My sister is a college professor and her school gave her a Mac with a camera, how can she verify that no one has been spying on her? Is there anything she can do to prevent it from happening in the future?
I just recently installed Windows 7 on my macbook pro. Everything seemed to work well, especially after I installed boot camp for windows and its drivers.
However I can't seem to connect to the internet. My router is detected but when I select to connect to it I get no internet access.
1 Mac Pro connected to a Netgear DGN2200v3 (Etnet 1) for internet connection : Etnet 2 connected to a router for internal fast network.Other 4 Macs connected to the Etnet router. The problem i get it's : if the Mac 1 is connected to the Netgear i get slow access to the others Macs, if not the sharing ( for example screen sharing ) it's fast as usual. Previously i've used another Netgear wireless Etnet modem and all was fine.I think there is a need for a internal DGN2200 settings.
currently I connect to the internet by doing this: Go to System Preferences / Network. Then I select my internet provider name on the left pane and finally click on the Connect button. That's all. This internet profile has a PPoE service name, an account name and a password. My internet connection uses a cable DLink router (it's not wireless).
Question:
1) Does the password I mentioned above mean that my neighbors can't access my internet, or are they able to do that and, in this case, I need to set another password somewhere else?
2) If I need another password, how and where do I set it,
Is there any easy to follow video tutorials or other explanation for "ME" the ultra layman on how to access and share information on three computers at different locations via the internet?
I have two macs an iMac and a MacBook. I use Earthlink, have a BritePort modem and a Linksys wireless router.Everything was fine. No problems. I was able to get online with the two computers with ease, then I had problems connecting last week.If I went directly through the modem to my MacBook I can connect, but I would lose the internet wireless intermittently throughout the day.Earthlink said everything was fine as far as signal reaching my modem. So I bought an Airport Extreme.
Both Macs connected wirelessly but then I'd lose internet whenever BOTH tried to get online.I would be working fine on my MacBook, but once my wife tries to get online with the iMac, it kicks us both off! If she's online on the iMac and I try to get online on the MacBook it kicks us off! This is what was happening with the Linksys too! I reconnected it, and it was only when both Macs accessed the internet that we both lost connection. It was working perfectly fine a week ago, nothing has changed, which is why I am baffled!
I unplugged my PC and my two macs because of the potential threat of the whole April Fools Day Virus. Well I heard nothing happened so I turned on my PC. Interent would not connect.. then I realized my wifi modem wasnt connected. I connected it and the internet worked fine. I went downstairs and turned on my old imac and my new 17 inch macbook pro. I booted up Safari just to make sure and it won't connect. It just keeps acting like it's trying to load and won't connect even though I have full signal. Any ideas what's up? It's going on with both of them yet for some reason my pc is working fine.
Before I was able to access files in my drop box on my desktop from my macbook. Now i can't sing on at all....I didnt do anything different and didnt adjust any firewall settings or anything like that...anyone know wtf is up wit dat??
I am taking an evening course on web design. I am learning with asp to connect to an access data base. The computers are all Pc and all works fine. When I try to do the same on my mac it wont work. Is is just not possible or is there a work around?
I'm wondering if there is a way to tell which base station I am connecting to my network through. my setup is one timecapsule which is creating the network and it is extended by another airport express through ethernet. The network is 5ghz N only if that makes any difference. I was wondering if there is an application or some other way (terminal??) of finding out which one my computer is connecting to.
I'm an iBook G4 user. I've had my computer for about 4 years and never had any problems, but in the past two weeks, I've been experiencing a lot of difficulty with my internet.
The problem's got to be with airport, because I'm connected right now with an ethernet cable and am having no issues.
Using my airport, I can still usually connect to the internet-- in fact, when I first connect to a wireless network, I have strong signal strength-- but I lose my internet connection after just a few minutes.
When I click on "Open internet connect," I can often reconnect to the network, but then I get the error message "out of range of network" and am booted off again.
This has happened to me on two separate internet networks-- both in my home and at the library-- so I think the problem is with my computer, not the signal.
There's not any physical object blocking the signal as far as I can see, and I've been able to use this wireless network in the past without any problems. (It's my partner's network and is and password protected, so it's not like I'm stealing it from someone next door or something.)
I'm running Mac OS X.
I've looked at getting airport express, but I don't want to pay money for something that may or may not fix the problem.
I have had non stop trouble with my internet connection. I use Tiscali in the UK via a Netgear router and an Airport Extreme (the UFO shaped one). I now cannot access the web again and have been told by Tiscali that they do not provide technical help for either Apple or Netgear. A couple of questions. What is the benefit of using a router and airport extreme? Who is the best broadband provider for mac in the UK?
I currently have my mac connecting to a wireless network and have since plugged in a ethernet cable to use because I can get a better connection, but even with it plugged in I still seem to be connected to the wireless network How can I make it so its only using the ethernet connection?
I have G5 that I am running leopard on. I have an airpot extreme network setup in the house. The G5 shows its connected to the network but will not open internet pages. It was working fine a few days ago. I also have a Macbook that works great on the network and can connect to the internet. All the network settings seem to be the same for the G5 and the Macbook. Literally one day it worked and the next it did not. Is there a setting I am missing somewhere that would cause it not to be able to open internet pages?
I have an external monitor that I am trying to hook up to via the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. When it's not hooked up, the internet works, but as soon as I plug in the monitor, the internet stops working.
I was able to get this machine to connect to my wireless home network, yet I still get the "Server cannot be found" error. Have tried with the old IE program, then I downloaded an older version of Safari on my iMac and transferred it via disk to the PMG4. The safari loaded fine, a window opens, yet it will still not connect. There must be a setting I'm missing - can anybody tell me what it is?
i have a Macbook (2009), Snow Leopard, 60GB of HD free.My widgets, including BOM (Bureau of Meteorology), Adam Internet and Fetch do neither flip nor refresh. even when clicking on the 'i' button, or the refresh icon they neither flip nor refresh.presing Apple + R, having clicked on the icons did not work either.Does anyone have an idea how to fix this problem?
I recently picked up an iMac G3 running on panther. It is my first Mac and I know nothing at all about them. I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to set up the internet in computer. I have connected the IMac to the router via Ethernet cable.
Safari can connect to the server.Suddenly I have this problem. It will connect to some sites, but for the most part and searches in google etc ar nil. Just a gray screen in browser window. Chrome and FF work fine. Just Sarafi that is corrupt. What can be done beside hacking the system via Terminal?
Have just inherited a lovely old Imac G3 and am having problems connecting it to the internet. My ISP tells me I need to be running 0SX10 and not 0S 8.5.
My Macbook Pro running on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) says i have full connection to my wifi but anytime I try to open a web page it says I am not connected to the internet. I connect to my router wirelessly. I have tried running test and the MacBook says I should have full connection to the network and internet. I have a iPhone and a HP laptop working fine with the same router but my wifi doesn't seem to work at all on my MacBook,
