OS X :: Unable To Share Files On Two Macs / Some Items Are Locked And Can't Be Modified
Aug 26, 2010
I just setup my new iMac (coming from a PowerMac G5). There is another PowerMac G5 on the same network that is still in use.
With my old setup, I was able to access the other PowerMac computer including all files...I found see, copy, change everything on the other computer. I don't recall how I initially did it but it worked great.
I can't seem to duplicate it on the new iMac. On the PowerMac still in use, it says that Admins are supposed to have total access but my access seems very limited. It will only work for folders that I specifically add in File Share and even then it says some items are locked and can't be modified when I open them on my iMac.
It seems as if I am not gaining access as an Admin but as a regular user. What am I doing wrong here?
I was doing a major cleanup with an external Seagate USB HDD due to low free disk spaces. It has two partitions/drives: FAT32 (using it for on other non-Apple machines like Windows 2000 SP4) and HFS [Time Machine only]). I threw about 30,000 items (copied from an old Windows 2000 SP4 machine's HDD with NTFS back a few years ago) from FAT32 partition/drive into the trash can. However, I am having problems emptying it.
Most of them were emptied, but some were left behind. This four years old MacBook Pro's Mac OS X 10.5.8's Trash dialog boxes said "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." and "Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "<filename>" is locked. To empty everything in the Trash, including locked items, press the Options key while selecting Empty Trash".
[URL] for the screen shots/captures of the error messages.I tried holding Option key and emptying trash, but that didn't work. I used Finder to look at the files, and they had locked status. So I unlocked them which worked, but I can't delete the empty folders/directories, and these don't have locked. What's going on and how do I empty the trash?

I have a new iMac MacBook air and aebs with a USB drive, both computers are set up as the same user and passed and with full file sharing running. From the iMac I can see the laptop under the shared heading but clicking on it just sits for a while and then says unable to connect, the same thing happens when I click connect as. This happens from the laptop also and also exactly the same when trying to connect to the drive on the aebs.
They only way it works is to go the finder and going through connect to server and this is fine, any ideas what to do? Also my understanding is that the drive on the aebs should automatically connect but this doesn't? Which means every time I restart the laptop I have to manually reconnect to the drive which is annoying as I use it for time machine. I would also like to easily connect both macs together so I can keep files synced easier.
Before I was able to access files in my drop box on my desktop from my macbook. Now i can't sing on at all....I didnt do anything different and didnt adjust any firewall settings or anything like that...anyone know wtf is up wit dat??
I can't seem to edit any pictures with Preview anymore since I upgraded to Lion. Every time I try to save an image after resizing or whatever, it says the file is locked. If I check the info of the file the "locked" checkmark is unchecked. And I have all the permissions to the file. Tried everything, switched the "lock after 2 weeks" thing of in Time Machine (even though tha would probably not help: images I took today are still "locked" in Preview), tried copying them and then saving them, and tried to lock them and then unlock them, but I can't seem to edit and save them.
I need some guidance getting the items I have on my computer permanently deleted from the trash. When I go to delete them I get the following message below and I can't delete anything. What do I need to do?
Message Received: This operation can not be completed because the item is locked wmphelp.htm wmpicon.gif windowshade.gif whatsnew.htm volume.gif viewinginfo.htm upgradingwmp.htm And the list just goes on .......
Running 10.6.4 on a 27" iMac 3.06 GHz C2D. I was irritated by sometimes not being able to empty items from my trash(message that file was in use when it wasn't). I found on lancelhoff.com a command for terminal(cd ~/.Trash && sudo rm -rf ) followed by directory/filename which allowed these pesky files to be deleted which worked great. I was showing my manager the trick I'd found and while doing so, it stopped deleting the files.
Now when I put items in the trash I get a message 'Are you sure you want to delete "xxxx.yyy"? This item will be deleted immediately. You can't undo this action" instead of putting it in the trash. The files I was trying to delete when I was doing my doomed demo will not delete even after a restart. I did a fix permissions on my drive with Disk Utility which was no help in this regard.
Getting a message within photoshop that files cannot be saved as they are locked. I check the same files with 'Get Info' and the locked file box is unchecked. I have changed file permissions on the entire disc so that everyone can read/write but still the same message. Tried terminal command to uncheck flags also to no avail. I can do save as but a little frustrating. Is there a workaround to get all my files back onside?
This is a new disc that I may have installed without due care to permissions/ownership when I formatted it.
When I try to empty my recycle bin it tells me that there are some locked items, so I select the option to empty all items. It starts emptying it but then it stops without telling me what the issue is. I have about 1,000 items, what can I do?
Info: MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
How do I remove locked items from trash? I want to delete unneeded (duplicate) backup files that were on an external disk. I have not succeeded using empty trash or secure empty trash. I am the administrator. Mac OS X (10.9.3) Mavericks.
I cannot delete items from my desktop. The message says "This item can't be completed because backup items can't be modified" This is a new problem, and it is happening wtih pdf, jpg, Word docs. Just about anything.
I'm trying to delete items from my computer that no longer use and need the space and it gives me this message: 'The operation can't be completed because the item AppleWorks 6 is in use". Any idea how I can delete everything even the locked items?
I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??
This is probably very basic but I don't know how to do it.I have an iMac (2007) running Leopard. I have an iBook (2004) running Tiger. They both share my home wireless network.
How can I best share documents between them? Eg how can I browse the hard drive of each machine from the other- ideally without entering passwords etc every time?
Additionally, the iMac is connected to the printer (because it is also a scanner); can the iBook share the printer too?
Ok, was excited to get a refurb Mini today to setup as a Media Center using Boxee. I've got a 1TB WD External Drive used to store all my media, and I figured sharing that drive between the Mini and my Blackbook would be a cinch. WAY not the case. Both computers are running 10.5, fully updated.
These are the steps that I thought it would involve: - Connecting the Drive to the Mini - Turning on File Sharing - Adding the specific folders on the Drive I want shared, and setting permissions accordingly (Don't know if its relevant (or a stupid idea regardless), but I have the same user name and password setup on both of these machines as the admin) - Connecting to the Mini in Finder on the Blackbook..............
My friend was having some issues with an old mac of his, so he bought a new one. He said that when he connected the two macs to move files from the old one to the new one, something weird happened. Te new one found the processor and ram from the old one and used it as its own resources.
I have lost contact with this guy so i have no way to find out how this was done. I think he said he used a firewire cable between the two macs but am not sure
does anyone know how to do this? I dont think it was xgrid cause it worked with all programs and could see the processors in activity manager. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have two Macs, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini.I have all my music on MacBook Pro. I want to be able to access iTunes from Mac Mini. But I don't like Home Sharing, because it doesn't really sync my music, and that route keeps two separate libraries.
When I'm home, both Macs are connected to the same network. I want my Mac Mini to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library, update new music from Mac Mini which gets reflected on MacBook Pro. So that if I consolidate the file from Mac Mini, it gets put into the hard drive of MacBook Pro.
I understand what I'm trying to do, doesn't actually put physical files on Mac Mini. If MacBook Pro is not in the network or is turned off, that I wouldn't be able to access MacBook Pro's iTunes Library.
I don't want to use any third party applications to "sync" my music. I want to be able to do it by using File Sharing and such.
I'm sure this has been posted, but my search pulled up hundreds of threads. After I scanned the first 50, I decided to just post my question.
I have to wait a few days (at most) for my job to register my MAC address so that the new Mac Pro has access to the network/internet via ethernet. It does not have an Airport card or Bluetooth. While I am waiting, is there a way to connect the Mac Pro to my Powerbook (which has Wifi internet access) such that it can piggyback on the internet connection as a temporary solution?
I just got a new MAC..But all of my other systems in the office is Windows..We need a way, so that I can all of that windows systems folders from my MAC and copy the files to Mac.
I received an email with a pdf file that I had to complete and send back. I opened the document with Preview, made the changes to complete the form, and saved it ("saved as" because the program wouldn't let me just "save" it. A box popped up saying that changes may affect the original format and that I had to "save as" to get a copy of the file). I opened it again just to make sure, and all the changes were there. I sent it via gmail, and a few hours later the original sender tells me that the form was empty. I checked, and it was empty, even though the name of the file was the one I gave it. I tried again with the same result. Using a PC I had no problems, so I am guessing that the issue is with Preview. Does anyone know what I did wrong?
I have a few RAR files I downloaded from the internet. They are sitting in my Downloads folder. These are some of the latest files I've downloaded, but when I sort by Modified and Created Date, they are scattered throughout the folder. The dates the files have are from before I even downloaded them.
I'm used to Windows where I could sort by Modified or Created date and I could see the latest files I downloaded in descending order from the most recent to the oldest. So, is OSX different, am I misunderstanding something or is there something weird about these RAR files? Furthermore, when I unpack the RAR files, their modified/created date is not today's date.
