OS X :: Networking IMac From Mini And Vice Versa

Mar 8, 2010

I have added a Mini to my Apple family and Im loving it so far. For a while now Ive been ripping Blurays on my iMac for streaming to my PS3 for playback. Well the Mini has taken the PS3s place as my HTPC. So I setup the Mini on my network and all is well. I can connect to my iMac from the Mini and Vice Versa. I can screen share, no sweat. I can copy and paste files between the 2, no problems. My issue is mainly with the program Plex and iTunes. All my BDs are stored on my iMac so I pointed Plex to the iMac drive to add the movies. It appeared to work until I restarted the Mini at which point it appeared to lose track of where that folder is. If I try to play a movie it gives me an error like "file doesnt exist". I can go back in and add the source again, but this is starting to take a while to do and it keeps losing link when I shut one of the machines down.

So my question is... is there a way to automatically mount a shared folder on my Mini upon startup? Anyone have experience with plex know of a better way to do this? I tried it as an SMB share but that also didnt seem to consistent. iTunes is a whole other issue. I dont want to have a different copy of iTunes on all my Macs, not sure how to address that one though. Ill have to start googling. I would prefer to have my iMac as the mainframe storing all the media and have my Mini and MBP get its content from there, but Im having a tough time figuring that out.

Hardware :: Using DD-WRT To Bridge AEBS (Or Vice-Versa)

Apr 30, 2010

I'm moving into a new apartment soon, and I really don't want to worry with running wires again. I want to setup my linksys WRT610N (running DD-WRT) in my office, and connect it to my AEBS which will sit in my living room, connected to my gateway.

I initially tried to do the reverse of this, and have the AEBS join the DD-WRT network, but it didn't seem to want to do that at all. So I'm trying to join the DD-WRT box to the AEBS network. I'm just having trouble on defining the security settings.

I'm using WPA2 Personal on my AEBS. What encryption algorithm does the AEBS use? My wrt gives me options for aes, tkip, or both.

So whenever I delete Mail within Gmail or MAIL, the other program is updated to represent itself in the same way.

For the past few weeks i've been looking for a place to jot down my to-do's and notes within a computer and figured Gmail was perfect since I tend to visit Gmail at least once a day. at least.

Switch 1 is in my entertainment center and had ethernet port 1 connected to this switch since I have had my computer but when plugged into switch 2 which I have just added to my workstation and on the switch there is no lights and in system preferences port 1 flashes between not connected and no ip address. OS X Mavericks :: How To Automatically Switch Between Two Different WiFi Settings

Jun 3, 2014

I have to work with two different Wi-Fi (at home and office) one of which uses DHCP and other requires me to manually enter IP address. Right now I have to keep on changing Wi-Fi settings (putting IP addresses when at office and setting to DHCP at home) whenever I go from home to office and then do the reverse when I go from office to home. Can I automate that so I don't have to repeatedly fiddle with settings?

OS X :: Make Computer Think WiFi Is Actually Ethernet?

Jun 19, 2010

I'm sure everyone heard of Onlive which launched yesterday, one of of the downsides currently is they wont allow you to play over Wi-Fi due to latency issues. Mostly they don't want the user to experience latency issues and blame it on the service rather than the connection. (They say Wi-Fi will work eventually once they optimize it more, and currently their closed beta testers are able to use it over wireless, and even on the iPad, and iPhone). Anyway, Windows has a nifty feature where you can bridge your connections, and by doing that, Onlive will work over Wi-Fi, I tried it out and it actually worked great, very minimal latency issues, but I usually am on my OSX partition, and want to play it on here. Does anyone know of a way to fake out Onlive? Or do a bridge connections type thing within OS X?

Hardware :: Way To Switch Off Airport Extreme Or Time Capsule Wifi?

Nov 26, 2010

Is there a way, in the settings, to turn off the Time Capsule's Airport wifi? I've been looking at the "Apple Airport Networks" and the "Designing Airport Networks" manuals and haven't found an On/Off setting similar to the MBP's Airport On/Off. I live in a high-rise, with a lot of wifi networks, and would like to configure the Time Capsule via wired LAN with wifi off, until it is secured with WPA2 encryption, and MAC address filtering. Also, I will probably be using the gigabit LAN connection most of the time, when at my desk.

Mac Mini :: Ethernet Does Not Route Unless WiFi Is Connected

Jun 25, 2012

I am having the darndest problems with routing on my internal network, specifically with my Mac Mini Server which originally came Snow Leopard Server and was upgraded over the top (no clean metal) wtih Lion and Lion Server (10.7.4) Router is a Cisco/Linksys E4200 with firmware 1.0.04, but have had same problems with 1.0.02 and 1.0.03.Internal LAN/WiFi is defined as 10.0.0.0/255.255.255.0. Router is 10.0.0.1 and gateway. DNS is supposed to be served by the Mac Mini on 10.0.0.7, which also hosts my DHCP server to configure others on my home network.

With WiFi off on the Mac Mini "netstat -rn" returns essentially the same thing as on my Mac Pro (10.7.4 not-server) but for the MacPro at 10.0.0.3. In this condition the Mini will ping the MacPro and I can ssh between, through the ethernet switch on the E4200. The MacPro can ping the E4200 but the Mac Mini can not. The E4200 has some ports opened to forward to the Mac Mini. But, enable WiFi on the Mac Mini and suddenly the ethernet starts working through the E4200.

Sometimes I can change the static IP address on the Mini's ethernet with WiFi off and then it starts speaking to the E4200 and internet. For instance tonight I changed it to 10.0.0.8 and it didn't work. But 10.0.0.6 did. Moved it back to 10.0.0.7 and it still didn't work trough the router but it did work internally Mini to MacPro through the enthernet switch on the E4200.

MacBook Air :: Use Ethernet Instead Of Wifi For Reinstalling Lion?

Jul 3, 2012

The harddrive became unbootable, so I re-formatted it from Recovery HD and now I need to reinstall Lion, which requires an internet connection to do so.

I've connected my Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter but it isn't picking up an IP address according to the Network Utility within Recovery HD.  Do I have to use wifi?   It's a 4 GB download.  Wifi will be slow.   When I plug the same ethernet cable into the ethernet port on a MacBook Pro, Network Utility there picks up an IP, so I know that the ethernet part is working.

Here's a picture of the screen of Network Utility within Recovery HD detecting the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter but not detecting an IP:
