View 3 Replies View RelatedI am looking into some computer issues a friend was having with her G5 iMac. While I was snooping around some simple things that could be the issue she was having I came across an interesting issue. When in System Preferences clicking the "Click the lock to make changes." does absolutely nothing. It is kind of silly as I am unable to do anything in System Preferences, which severely limits what I can do with the computer. I searched Google about 25 different ways and came up with nothing on how to correct this problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running a macbook only a couple of months old so i go the cheap as chips dvd for SL Installed it and things seem fine except the fun that office 2008 wont load at all (gotta love MS) Now though i can not authenticate myself to change accounts in preferences even though i am the only user and i am the admin user. i click on the lock and it simply saying "authenticating" then goes back to "click lock to change settings" this is annoying as i cant do much in terms of users etc and i think this is lnked to the fact that i can't install not programs. In fact i couldn't even install the additional programs from the install DVD!!! i got to the final button to actually instal after selecting the location etc and it does nothing after clicking install. No password prompt or nothing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook Pro with Leopard and the latest iTunes.
For some weird reason iTunes starts to add every file twice. And I don't mean that it just keep the original, it actually adds the file two times in the iTunes Music folder.
I just added 300 Beatles Songs but now it added every single song twice...I have 600 songs now. This happened now and then before and its REALLY annoying. Especially when I need to delete every single file manually. The show duplicates just shows both files but I still need to highlight every 2nd file and then delete it.
My System: Mac Mini running OSX 10.5.8. This is a Pentium processor based device and I have 1 gb of ram a 60 gig hard drive and using a seagate 1.5 TB external for all my media and documents. I am also using a windows system keyboard and mouse (I just replaced my old windows system with the Mac Mini). I have two mp3 players: The first one is made by LG (its sold under a different brand name but it was built by LG) the device shows in the finder's "get info" as MS-DOS (FAT32) format and has 4gb storage space. The other is sold under the Disney brand name the format is MS-DOS (FAT16) it has 1gb of storage space.
I am using each as a USB mass storage when adding and removing mp3 files. I am used to doing this in the windows environment, and I realize that the OSX environment is not the same so I am confused as to how I can successfully delete files from the devices and add new files to the devices. So far this is what I am doing
1. Tether device with USB cable.
2. Open device in Finder window.
3. Highlight files I would like to remove then select "move to trash".
4. Select "empty trash" to clear space on device.
At this point the finder window will show the space has been freed on the device for me to add new files. When I attempt to do so the device says there is not enough free space to do so. Please save the "get an ipod" comments. These devices are for my 10 year old and 8 year old, they were gifts they received and I am not going to buy a new device for them.
I used to be able to add files (pictures) to CD-R that was previously used. Now if I try to add more files to it, it tells me that CD can no longer be modified. Means that it was automatically closed. How can I continue adding files to a same CD without closing it after?

Is there a way to add files to multiple iTunes libraries simultaneously?
I currently store all my media on a network drive; so I don't want to copy the same file to multiple locations. Instead, after the DVD is ripped I'd like to have the movie added to two different libraries. Simply copying the iTunes library from my primary computer won't work. The library on my primary computer, has all my personal song ratings and playlists. The second computer is connected to a TV to be used as a HTPC and is more of a family computer. I would like to be able to maintain different playlists for this computer.
Essentially is there an easy way to make sure any new files added (or modified) to my primary iTunes library are also added to another iTunes library?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't mean tags, but short comments attached visually to files within the Finder? like a sticky note. I have huge image archives, and want to add short comments to certain pics / files, which are visible by an icon as I scroll through.
I'm not after a third-party solution, I prefer to access my images via Finder (which I find the best and least-fuss image browser since Snow Leopard), just wondered if anyone had made such an app?
I am still pretty new to Mac and OSX and i had a question about itunes.
Ok, So if i add say 1 album and 1 Movie. Lets say the the album is in My Music folder and the Movie is in My Movies folder.
Now if i go to add to library in iTunes and add them then i am done. If i go and delete the 2 files from the folders i notice that the album and movie is still in itunes and still playable? How is that if i deleted them from the folders on my Mac?
Does iTunes actually COPY the movie and music i add to its own folder? so that way if i do delete it from my mac, its still in a iTunes folder somewhere?
Like with windows, WMP copies the location of that media, So if i add a album and later delete it from my PC and go and try to play it in WMP, it will say NOT FOUND or just no longer show it.
Reason i ask this is because i do not want to have double of everything on my HD and take up more space then i should...
I started this thread on another forum. Im coming here because theyve been less with forthcoming with help or things to attempt. See the related link.I've been handed control of a Mac lab at my school. The former admin was supposed to document, but he didn't. To lock this slack-tastic wonder out of my network I wanted to change the password on my local Panther server.
Being the Unix geek that I am, I SSH'd to the server, logged in as administrator and called 'passwd' to change my password. Now Workgroup Manager doesn't work.
It was suggested that I attempt to edit the NetInfo database directly. I tried via the 'Netinfo Manager', but that didn't do anything helpful. Now I can't authenticate on the 'Netinfo Manager' on the server and I still can't become fully authenticated with the 'Workgroup Manager' on my own account. I am able to authenticate on the server directly, with the GUI and console. I'm able to install software, use 'sudo', etc.
I tired to use the 'pwpolicy' command since 'administrator' authenticates with the PasswordService, but I got an odd error: Code: pwpolicy -a administrator -u administrator -setpassword apple
*** Error: dsDoDirNodeAuth failed with error = -14090
Method = dsAuthMethodStandard:dsAuthSetPasswd
I can't find a reference to that error code anywhere. I have verified that I can authenticate correctly with 'pwpolicy'.
I tried to modify the password with the install discs, but I didn't see any simple tools for changing the password when browsing the CDs. I assume I have to boot off them in order to change the password, but when I restarted the server with the OSX install disc inserted it did not boot off the disc. Is there an easy way to allow for booting off the disc on a Mac platform? I'm only familiar with the PC configuration methods.
Im having problem problems all over Lion Server. I can't manage Profile Manager on client machines..nothing authenticates. So I thought I would rebuild the Open Directory replica functions....however in recreating an Open Directory I get an error.
"Cannot replicate a directory with augment user records.Your server cannot become a replica of 'server.com' because its directory contains augment user records. Please refer to the Open Directory Administration Guide for more information about this issue."
How do I get rid of the augment users records?By the way..I set this server up per Lynda Lion Server essential training. Part of the server functions with File Sharing and users accessing folders..but Profile Manager does not authenticate on client machines.
I have just installed 10.4.9 Server on a Mac Mini, I am no expert but I got most of the services running using a book on setting up server.
The problem I have is everyone on the local network can send and recieve mail no problem using IMAP or POP3 accounts and even Webmail works offsite,
But when someone is offsite like at home, they cannot authenticate and connect to the server to send mail, we use Apple mail but have even tried Thunderbird and Outlook on a PC. None will connect.
Currently we are using CRAM-MD5 for mail authentication.
I keep getting the message "unable to authenticate" when trying to sign in to the YouTube app. The website allows me to sign in just fine.

I'm trying to copy my music from a hard drive to my mac and it won't let me for certain files.
for example: You cant copy Muse because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesnt distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames.
this pops up for only certain artists and i dont know why because i havent named anything on my hd muse.

View 2 Replies View RelatedA suspicious popup came up on Firefox, but as soon as I clicked the red X to close it, another message popped up and asked if I was sure I wanted to continue closing the window. The options were "ok" to continue, or "cancel" to stop. I was in such a hurry I didn't see what the popup was for, but this was the first time I've been prompted to click another option to close the window, so I am suspicious of what it could possibly be. I clicked cancel and the window immediately closed. I have never had a questionable popup such as this in the two years I've had my Mac, so I was curious as to whether I should be concerned. I've restarted Firefox and deleted all browsing history/cookies. Is it possible this is malware or a virus?
