Mar 2, 2010I've got a 1.83 GHz 17" iMac and for all intents and purposes it fits the "Intel Processor" requirement for Snow Leopard but it isn't a true '64 bit' processor(?) like the later Intel chips... anyone installed the new OS on a similar machine and can report any major differences in speed (or not)?

Jun 21, 2012Every few weeks my iMac will suddenly freeze, the screen going black or white or pink etc. The only way I can get the computer back is to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. Then after a restart everything is OK for a few more weeks. Usually it occurs when I am on the internet. I click on something and suddenly the computer is frozen. I am on OS X 10.6.8 and usually use Safari. Ironically when I opened this forum 5 minutes ago there was a similar sounding problem at the top of the list!

ARM, Motorola, and Samsung are also among the involved manufacturers.The group's focus will be to develop widespread standards for calculating "heterogeneous data" regardless of whether it's onboard a conventional central processor or on a new wave of video cards that can handle some specialized calculations in addition to their normal graphics duties. If you do not use it, and don't need to attach a 2nd HD inside, can you not just simply remove it and make your MBP lighter?I looked around for some specs on the internal drive but could not find how much it weighed. Dec 4, 2010I see the numbers of everything from Core 2 Duo, to the slightly faster and cooler Core i3, to the supposedly faster core i5s and i7s. The benchmarks go up accordingly, but I found this does not always equate in a faster experience on most tasks.
Here's my experience so far on processor upgrade:
In one computer trade school re-certification class I am in, we are working with Windows Server 2003 on a Quad Xeon platform and it's incredibly slow.
But in a previous class we had the previous generation server edition on older Xeons, and while not fast, it was much better. On paper the newer multi-core Xeons should have made a difference, but could 2003 server software be that much more bloated than the previous Windows server edition that it would stall like that and make us wish we had the older setup?
I am going to try out the Adobe CS lab and put the new high end Dells to the test there and see if they work better than when we had an older CS version on older Xeon equipped Dells.
I don't know if this is something to do with Dell, or if Apple's increasing processor bumps/generations are going to similarly not make a difference in the speed things appear to go at, whether it's Adobe stuff, server stuff, or anything else that needs power.
I know somebody who plans on a Core 2 Duo, i5 or i7 MBP and I was wondering if the higher end processor is worth it in that case (iMovie being the main program of use).

Feb 5, 2009I've tried installing Leopard on my G5 quad core (Intel cores) that was running OS 10.4 before. It said there was a problem with the BaseSystem, so I asked it to quit and reboot from the old OS, but now it's stuck in the Terminal application. I've removed the Leopard disk and inserted the original install disks that came with the machine, but it's not doing anything. All I can get is the list of 950 commands that I could type in.
