OS X :: Upgrading Panther To Tiger - Computer Crashes

Mar 2, 2010

I am attempting to load tiger onto my 12 inch PowerBook G4. The installation cd runs up to the first part when it asks you to restart. Then after the restart it up and comes up with a error message 'unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6,4".' This is not the complete message as it is to long to type out. I have tried every thing I can think of fsck, repairing permissions, removing an after market ram and I have tried lots else.

OS X :: Panther Versus Tiger

Sep 11, 2010

On an G4 iBook I was wondering what advangtes running Tiger over Panther are. I maxed out the RAM to have a total of 1.12 GB. I am running Tiger now but it slows down if I fire up more than 5 apps at the same time. I was thinking Panther would run better. All I do is internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, listening to music and playing old games.

Mac Mini :: Panther Or Tiger?

Jan 3, 2009

tell me which version of the MacMini is able to run either Panther OS and which does Tiger.

I'm thinking of buying either a used or new MacMini for one purpose. I need to set up a local test webserver, I don't wanna do it on my main system cause there's a chance it'll make the OS unstable for general uses.

OS X :: Reinstall On Powerbook G4 - Panther / Tiger?

Apr 13, 2007

since buying my mbp, my powerbook has become pretty much redundant for anything other than word processing and internet use, at the moment its super slow because it has virtually no hd space left, so i have backed up, and want to reinstall the os, clean it up a bit and get it running the internet superfast to use when i am travelling, keeping my mbp on my desk for the rest of the time. I have a copy of both panther and tiger that came with the powerbook (i bought it a week before tiger came out and apple sent me it for free!), but it is currently running panther. now its a stock powerbook 12" 1.5 Ghz with 512 ram, and it wont need to run anything too complex: just word/safari/idvd/itunes, however it would be nice to have dashboard (i have got used to it on my mbp), but not essential.

I don't want to spend any more money on this thing, but want to know which would be faster...i have heard that tiger puts more strain on ram, but also that powerbooks run faster with tiger than with panther...which of these statements is true?

PowerPC :: Panther Or Tiger For IMac G3

I might be getting a iMac G3 (for surfing and maybe itunes) and I was wondering if I should put tiger or panther on it? I had tiger on my iMac G4 before it died and I loved it. I was used to leopard before though (my imac G6). I don't know the processors or anything yet... but since I'm getting two of them for free I'm not really complaining. How much iMac G3 suck. OS X V10.4 :: Upgrading (finally) To Lion From Tiger?

Apr 13, 2012

I'm finally ready to upgrade from my Tiger OS to the new Lion. I have the disc, from Apple, to upgrade first to Snow Leopard and from there I'll immediately download Lion. I'm assuming there's no reason, and it's best not to open any files while I'm in Snow Leopard.

I have my Home folder backed up to an external hard drive. Is there anything else I should know or be aware of?  Is there any special way to do this? I read something once about maybe doing a "clean install" of the new OS (Snow Leopard or Lion?).  I don't really know what that is. Will that be necessary?

OS X :: Upgrading From Tiger To Snow Leopard - No Backup

Oct 12, 2009

Posting for a friend who has just purchased Snow Leopard Box Set and wants to upgrade from Tiger. She was half way through the installation when she thought that Snow Leopard had not asked her to back up and she cancelled the installation half way through (not sure how, think she just turned off her Mac). She turned it back on but the only option it is giving her is too continue with the installation of Snow Leopard.

What she wants to know is will the erase all her data on her hard drive, or will she still have her files located in Documents/ Downloads etc when the installation is complete. I know when I upgraded from Leopard all these files were still present, I'm not so sure if it is the same with Tiger. Shes really worried about this as she has some valuable files in there.

PowerPC :: Upgrading Tiger To Leopard On IMac G5?

Jan 28, 2010

I have an iMac G5 17" with 2GHz PowerPC G5 processor , originally had 512 MB RAM and has been upgraded to 2Gb RAM. The HD has been erased apart from the Tiger OS. I assume there is now 1Gb RAM in each slot ... not sure if the original 512 MB was split between two slots or if it was all in one slot. Have been using OS Tiger 10.4 up until now.

Recently I bought a RETAIL edition of Leopard 10.5.1 to install ( the one with the big X on the front) but after 10 minutes of the installation got the message "Install Failed ... Source Media Disc damaged" . I previously tried another Leopard installation disc and got the same message. I think it's unlikely that both installation discs are damaged; they are both new and came from reputable sources. I can reinstall Tiger without any problems. I have tried erasing the HD volume using Disc Utilities at the initial install stage but still get the same message .

A colleague has now advised me there have been problems with some iMac G5 machines with upgraded RAM when trying to install Leopard ... the Leopard installation disc does not like upgraded RAM.

Before I try and source some RAM to the original spec. ie 512MB, and then try again with Leopard, can anyone advise me if it might be worth taking out just one of the existing 1 Gb RAM modules ( I assume there are two there, I dont know for sure because the upgrade was done by a Mac Repair Shop ) and then trying the Leopard Install with just 1Gb RAM ? Or do I need to go back to the original 512Mb module(s) ?

PowerPC :: Upgrading IBook G4 Running On Tiger To Leopard?

So I'm just gonna reinstall everything from the ground up. My question is though, should I install Tiger again or would Leopard be better? The only thing I am afraid of is that Leopard would slow down the iBook since it's an older Laptop. Here are the specs:

OS X :: Insterted The Tiger Disc It Would Tell That It Was Unable To Install Mac OS X On Computer?

Jun 8, 2010

I recently purchased a MacBook 2.1 running 10.4.11, however the seller of the item sent the computer to me with a lot of his own data on so I decided to delete this and start fresh.Whenever I insterted the Tiger disc it would tell me that it was unable to install Mac OS X on my computer so I decided that the best thing to do would be to erase the hard drive, however in doing so I erased the operating system and now whenever I try to boot the computer from the disc I am faced with a folder with a question mark flashing at me.

It appears to do something when I insert the disc that my housemate got with his MacBook Pro which runs Snow Leopard but still tells me that it is unable to install OS X.

Mac Pro :: Frequent Crashes When Computer Is Sleeping?

Jun 29, 2012

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008. Here's my set-up: BootDrive (Mercury Excelsior PCI SSD 240 GB): contains OS X and applicationsDataDrive (2.25 TB RAID 0 with three 750 GB drives): contains files, pictures, music, videoTime Machine Backup (2 TB drive) Recently I've been experiencing frequent crashes. These mostly happen when the computer is sleeping. For example, I'll put it to sleep before going to bed, and I'll wake up in the morning to find it unresponsive when I attempt to wake it up. (Also: the computer tends to be waking itself up from sleep, i.e. I'll wake up and it will be powered up, even though I put it to sleep the night before.) When I notice that it has crashed, I hold down the power button on the tower until it shuts off, then press it again to start up. When I do, it boots into Safe Mode. Does this suggest a problem is due to a peripheral or drive?

The first time this happened, one of my internal drives got corrupted and I had to use Disk Utility to repair it. The second time it happened the permissions on my data drive got screwed up, and a few files on that drive got corrupted (including my Lightroom library). It just happened a third time, and once again the permissions on the Data drive are screwed up. If I recall, this all started happening after I installed the Mercury Excelsior PCI SSD. But it appears to be functioning well. I've run Verify Disk and it says it has no problems.

Software :: Two System Crashes - Need To Restart Computer

Sep 30, 2009

I just rebooted my iMac for the second time after getting a system crash (the grey box on the screen that says, "You need to restart your computer..."). After I held the power button, and turned it back on, this message popped up AGAIN, but this time while it was still on the white screen.

Two system crashes... in a row?
-once while using the computer
-again while restarting it

Why did this happen twice? Overall I've noticed my iMac has been sluggish since installing Snow Leopard. I realized it happens whenever I plug in my Line6 TonePort (which is a USB device which switches the audio to go to my speakers via 1/4" outputs). I don't understand why this is suddenly causing the problem, it's been working fine for the last 2 years.
