MacBook Pro :: Computer Crashes With Iphoto?

May 22, 2012

I have a macbook pro MAC OS x and have started having issues with my computer's screen going black while working in iphoto.  The only thing I can do is to press the power button to power down and then reboot.  My memory is fine on the computer.  All updates have been completed.  Best I can tell, this only occurs while using iphoto.

OS X Mavericks :: IPhoto Crashes When Try To Export Photos To Computer - No More Free Upgrades?

Sep 11, 2014

I am currently running Mavericks 10.9.4 and iPhoto 8.1.2 on my MacBook.

I'm waaay behind on organizing my pictures unfortunately, so I haven't worked in iPhoto for a while. When I try to export pictures to the computer it "quits unexpectedly". Hmmm, maybe I should see if there's an update. OK, so the only option it gives me is to spend $14.99 for iPhoto 9.5.1?!?!?

No more free upgrades for something I already own?

MacBook :: External Drive (RAID) Crashes Computer

Dec 31, 2009

I recently installed os 10.6 on my MacBook, upgraded to 10.6.2 and everything was still working fine. Then, without thinking, I ripped out my shuffle and plugged in my mirrored (software) raid array of 2 drives. I immediately got the dimmed screen / you must restart your computer in all languages-screen. Now, whenever I plug in the raid into the usb the computer's screen goes dim and I get the same error message in all languages. I've tried booting with the install disk, still crashes. I have all my most important files on that drive.

MacBook :: Start Skype While In Windows, The Computer Crashes / Blue Screen?

Feb 19, 2009

Everytime I start skype while in windows, the computer crashes and I get the blue screen... I think it has to do with the sound drivers, because when I'm using msn messenger also in windows suddenly the microphone mutes itself.

I tryed updating the realtek drivers with no help, updated skype, no help, I uninstalled the realtek drivers and the laptop did not crash anymore but I had no sound, any advice like for example how to get the microsoft drivers to work on the laptop without using realtek??

For whatever reason with the microsoft drivers,I think the sound is trying to come out of the digital outlet, I can see the ligth inside the jack, but nothing comes out of the laptop's speakers...

By the way, the vista version is Home basic.

MacBook Air :: Unlocking Time Machine Backup Drive Crashes Computer?

Sep 8, 2014

Unlocking my external hard drive crashes my computer. It was encrypted by Time Machine (and I think that means it used FileVault because the unlock window has the FileVault icon).

There's a prompt to unlock the hard drive as soon as I plug it in but when I press the Unlock button my computer crashes.

I've tried different user accounts, safe mode, disk utility, recovery mode, different USB cables and different USB ports all with the same problem. As soon as I press enter on the password prompt the system crashes. If I type the wrong password it denies me so I know the password is correct.

The drive is in a SATA to USB dock but unfortunately I don't have another one to test with. Other drives work just fine in this dock.

The data recovery software I tried is useless because all the data is encrypted .

Software :: IPhoto 6.0.6 Crashes On Mac OS X 10.4.10

Jan 9, 2008

Whenever I try and open iPhoto, a message saying 'the application iPhoto quit unexpectedly'. I have googled this phrase and found a string from a user with similar problem on this forum.
http://macosx.com/tech-support/mac/iphoto/4681.html

Unfortunately, I tried all the suggestions in this string including multiple reinstallations from the bundled software disc of the software but nothing works. I've tried repairing permissions, deleting the file com.apple.iphoto.plist in preferences. I've deleted and recreated the iphoto folder in Pictures etc. I am using a MacBook Pro which is 6 months old. The only thing that I can think off is that a while back I uninstalled various bundled software packages that came with Mac OS X that I thought I wouldn't need to free up disc space. I can't remember which ones unfortunately however I can't see why this would affect iPhoto if I've reinstalled it and updated it. I don't want to reinstall Mac OS X by the way.

Applications :: IPhoto Crashes On Slideshows?

Feb 3, 2009

Every time I hit the slideshow button on iPhoto '09, I get the spinning rainbow wheel and then the app will eventually crash. This is very frustrating. Is anyone else having this problem with the new iLife version as well? Can you test for me using a large photo album that this might be happening to other users too? I refuse to believe that my MBP can't handle it.

Mac Pro :: IPhoto Getting Slow With Each Update - Crashes Often

Jun 19, 2012

My initial pleasure with the speed of my new-to-me Mac Pro (8 core) is turning to frustration as Lion and iPhoto get glitchier and slower with each update. Tonight, while simply saving a file in iPhoto, it crashed and took 97 seconds to reopen and stabilize (SBOD). I've seen posts as far back as early 2010 regarding iPhoto '11 being slow and unstable. Before being forced to "upgrade" my iPhoto library to accomodate the latest iPhoto update, I saved a copy, with the notion of returning to the previous iteration of iPhoto which always served me well. Has anybody tried this with Lion? I'm also considering going back to Snow Leopard.

Mac Pro :: Frequent Crashes When Computer Is Sleeping?

Jun 29, 2012

I have a Mac Pro Early 2008. Here's my set-up: BootDrive (Mercury Excelsior PCI SSD 240 GB): contains OS X and applicationsDataDrive (2.25 TB RAID 0 with three 750 GB drives): contains files, pictures, music, videoTime Machine Backup (2 TB drive) Recently I've been experiencing frequent crashes. These mostly happen when the computer is sleeping. For example, I'll put it to sleep before going to bed, and I'll wake up in the morning to find it unresponsive when I attempt to wake it up. (Also: the computer tends to be waking itself up from sleep, i.e. I'll wake up and it will be powered up, even though I put it to sleep the night before.) When I notice that it has crashed, I hold down the power button on the tower until it shuts off, then press it again to start up. When I do, it boots into Safe Mode. Does this suggest a problem is due to a peripheral or drive?

The first time this happened, one of my internal drives got corrupted and I had to use Disk Utility to repair it. The second time it happened the permissions on my data drive got screwed up, and a few files on that drive got corrupted (including my Lightroom library). It just happened a third time, and once again the permissions on the Data drive are screwed up. If I recall, this all started happening after I installed the Mercury Excelsior PCI SSD. But it appears to be functioning well. I've run Verify Disk and it says it has no problems.

Software :: Two System Crashes - Need To Restart Computer

Sep 30, 2009

I just rebooted my iMac for the second time after getting a system crash (the grey box on the screen that says, "You need to restart your computer..."). After I held the power button, and turned it back on, this message popped up AGAIN, but this time while it was still on the white screen.

Two system crashes... in a row?
-once while using the computer
-again while restarting it

Why did this happen twice? Overall I've noticed my iMac has been sluggish since installing Snow Leopard. I realized it happens whenever I plug in my Line6 TonePort (which is a USB device which switches the audio to go to my speakers via 1/4" outputs). I don't understand why this is suddenly causing the problem, it's been working fine for the last 2 years.

IMac :: Computer Crashes And Loses Hard Drive When Goes Into Sleep Mode?

Dec 21, 2009

I just had the original 300 GB hard drive fail in my aluminum 24" inch iMac running the latest update of Leopard. I wasn't able to save it using diskwarrior (diskwarrior said it was some sort of mechanical failure) but I was able to recover most of the data from it by booting from an external hard-drive.

So I went out and purchased a brand new Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB drive. The install went fine, it found the drive partitioned it and installed Leopard successful. Then is crashed and disappeared when I left it alone to run all the software updates. I came back and the computer was stuck on "Restart Required" after downloading all the updates. I went to hit restart now, and the system just hanged, wouldn't do anything. So I hard powered down the system and restarted it. It came up with nothing, just stuck on the White Screen of Death. So I plugged the external drive back in and booted from it. Mac OSX couldn't find the drive and diskwarrior would crash if I tried to run it. I tried to boot up from the OSX start-up disk and it couldn't find the drive either.

So I took the case apart and made sure all the connections were solid and the drive was mounted correctly. Everything looked fine so I plugged it in and it started up fine. Finished the updates and the iMac ran great.

So I thought maybe it was overheating, so I've installed smcfancontrol and started to monitor the temp of the drive. I also took the mac apart again and sucked out any dust in the fans or vents. The drive never goes over a 105 F, so it doesn't seem to be overheating.

However, this is where the problem is consistent: everytime the iMac goes into sleep mode, it crashes and the iMac is unable to find the hard-drive again. Unless I unplug it completely for 5 minutes or so. Once I unplug it, it finds the drive and operates like a champ.

I think maybe there's an issue powering the drive back on? Anyone have any ideas?

And my follow up posting later that day:

Quote:

So I ran some tests just to see if was an overheat issue, hard drive malfunction, or sleep issue. I decided to start encoding a video, pulled up Word, Power Point, Excel, started downloading all 6000 mail messages off my server (I never delete my e-mail :-/), also started installing iLife 09, and pulled up a bunch of webpages in Firefox with multiple tabs.

However, I shut off all sleep mode options on the hard drive. I let it run for an hour and came back. Everything is fine, hard drive isn't locked up and smcfancontrol shows the hard drive running pretty hot (115 degrees) but not so hot I'm worried. So it's definitely something to do the hard drives going into sleep mode and not powering back on. It's also weird that I have to leave the computer completely unplugged for 10-15 minutes before the drive is recognized again.

So turning off sleep seems to be my work-around, however, this shouldn't be a long term solution. I'm worried that there is a bigger issue with the iMac, but I'm not sure what would cause this. I've been a PC guy for years, this was my first Mac, and honestly I don't know enough about the inner workings to narrow this down. I would assume this would have to do with the motherboard in some way? But I'm not sure how you would even test it.

Applications :: After Card Reader Failure "Volume Can't Be Found" Msg Crashes IPhoto

Nov 25, 2009

My external memory card reader is temperamental and one day while importing its contents into iPhoto, it ejected itself. I got the warning about not safely ejecting my memory card and thought everything would be ok since that happened before and nothing too bad came from it. Only this time, iPhoto crashes regularly as it's searching for this one file--a .mov--that was on the ejected memory card. It searches for this file every time the app loads, and immediately after I try uploading a new batch of photos. The message I get is "The volume for "file name" cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume..." The crash entails beachball, fans going crazy, and the app freezes so must force quit.

I deleted the entry in the iPhoto library (in Finder) but it didn't help. I tried uploading a backup copy of that same file back into the iPhoto library. I've also tried inserting the original memory card with the file on it and nothing helps. What can I do? Version of iPhoto is 6.06.
