View 1 Replies View RelatedOn an G4 iBook I was wondering what advangtes running Tiger over Panther are. I maxed out the RAM to have a total of 1.12 GB. I am running Tiger now but it slows down if I fire up more than 5 apps at the same time. I was thinking Panther would run better. All I do is internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, listening to music and playing old games.
View 2 Replies View Related tell me which version of the MacMini is able to run either Panther OS and which does Tiger.
I'm thinking of buying either a used or new MacMini for one purpose. I need to set up a local test webserver, I don't wanna do it on my main system cause there's a chance it'll make the OS unstable for general uses.
How can I install Tiger 10.4.11 over Panther 10.3.9 ? I tried using a 10.4.2 install disc that I was going to update to 10.4.11, but got message that this would not work on this computer.Â

since buying my mbp, my powerbook has become pretty much redundant for anything other than word processing and internet use, at the moment its super slow because it has virtually no hd space left, so i have backed up, and want to reinstall the os, clean it up a bit and get it running the internet superfast to use when i am travelling, keeping my mbp on my desk for the rest of the time. I have a copy of both panther and tiger that came with the powerbook (i bought it a week before tiger came out and apple sent me it for free!), but it is currently running panther. now its a stock powerbook 12" 1.5 Ghz with 512 ram, and it wont need to run anything too complex: just word/safari/idvd/itunes, however it would be nice to have dashboard (i have got used to it on my mbp), but not essential.
I don't want to spend any more money on this thing, but want to know which would be faster...i have heard that tiger puts more strain on ram, but also that powerbooks run faster with tiger than with panther...which of these statements is true?
I might be getting a iMac G3 (for surfing and maybe itunes) and I was wondering if I should put tiger or panther on it? I had tiger on my iMac G4 before it died and I loved it. I was used to leopard before though (my imac G6). I don't know the processors or anything yet... but since I'm getting two of them for free I'm not really complaining. How much iMac G3 suck. I think they are adorable
View 13 Replies View RelatedI've got my old iBook G4 with loads of docs, musics, pictures etc on it, and have bought a recent 2nd hand MBP running Snow Leopard, and want to transfer everything over to it. I tried Migration Assistant but this doesn't seem to work properly Tiger to SL, seems designed for Leopard to Snow Leopard. So:
1) Should I upgrade Tiger to Leopard on the G4, and then use Migration Assistant? If so do I need a special Tiger to Leopard upgrade disc or will an ordinary Leopard disc do?
2) Should I aim to have the same username on the MBP as on the G4, or will this cause problems?
3) Any other tips on getting my stuff from the old computer to the new one!
I want to upgrade my emac from a panther to a tiger them upgrade ilife to 08 and install a 160 g harddrive, is this all possible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs an "Erase and install" really that complicated. I don't have enough free space on my HD to do an "archive and install". I want to keep all my old Apps but dont have any of the installation CD's as all the apps were all on the computer when its was given to me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to load tiger onto my 12 inch PowerBook G4. The installation cd runs up to the first part when it asks you to restart. Then after the restart it up and comes up with a error message 'unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6,4".' This is not the complete message as it is to long to type out. I have tried every thing I can think of fsck, repairing permissions, removing an after market ram and I have tried lots else.

I lost the install disk for my computer (Mac OS X 10.4, Tiger), and need to change my password (I forgot it ). I can only access single user mode. Is there any way that I can create an Administrator-Status user in Single User Mode? (NOTE: The "root" user isn't really an option since I enabled it a while ago and it has the same password as my current user, which I forgot...).
View 15 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of buying a hard drive for a PowerMac G4 that i just purchased. The computer doesn't have a DVD drive, just a CD. I have a copy of Tiger that could be installed but I would need a DVD drive. Would I be better off buying a cheap copy of Panther online somewhere and just using that, or buying a DVD drive and installing Tiger? Or finding another way to install one or the other on my Mac?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Panther (OS X 3.9), can I install Leopard (OS X 5) without Tiger (OS X 4) ever being installed ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter 5 years with 10.3.9 on an iBook, I've bitten the bullet and bought one of the new iMacs. The transfer has gone fairly well, but I'm having trouble moving my address book and keychain data across to the new machine.
They didn't come across using the Migration Assistant: the Snow Leopard Keychain won't accept anything exported from the Panther version. If I export the address book as V-cards from the old system (the only means of export, the new systems asks me whether I really want to import n cards, but after I say yes nothing appears in the bbok.
It's al very frustrating, (and not very Apple-like!) I'm on the verge of doing the whole thing manually, one address and one keychain entry at a time, which seems quite daft.
I have a ignorant friend that just upgraded from Panther (10.3) to Leopard (10.5) via the upgrade method and did not backup before hand. His issue is that the Mail conversion didn't complain, but all mailboxes contents were missing.
The Inbox folder in Mail was empty and Drafts was completely missing, as well as some other system generated folders (AFAIK). Other user created folders were in Mail on the left, but were empty. We were able to import the Foo.mbox folders into Mail, so we got the user created folders contents back, but that doesn't help for drafts or few hundred emails in the inbox.
I know this has kind of been dealt with before but I have a few specific questions.
I have a 2004 Powerbook G4 1.25GHz, 15", 80Gb HD, Panther.
I'm trying to clone a new imac running leopard to an old g4 running panther.
They only have 2 different versions, one that will run on leopard and one for panther.
I've set it up and everything but it says "the bootability of the target volume cannot be determined."
Do you think trying to clone to panther using the leopard ccc version will mess it up?
My mum bought a MacBook two or three years ago, but after a while it became unbearably slow. She stopped using it. I recently dug it up to try to do something about it, needed her password for reinstalling the OS, which she of course forgot (the password, not the OS). Anyway, I messed around in Single User Mode and accidentally effed something up - the "Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again." message started flooding the screen.
I read somewhere that I should delete a file that would make the MacBook show me the initial setup screen upon startup, so I did - all was well until I got to the end of registration. When I click 'Continue' it should take me to the screen responsible for creating a new login account - instead there is a grey 1px line in the middle of the light-grey box. I can still click 'Go Back', but that obviously takes me no-where.
I was wondering whether i could access and control my ibook G4 running panther from my leopard based MB?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a powermac in the office with latest version of tiger installed, when the main user logs in I can see his wallpaper but only the spotlight search icon in the top right hand corner and thats it. When I move the mouse over it it beachballs. All other profiles are fine.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm expecting a new mac mini (with super drive) from the FedEx guy any hour now with snow leopard on it. I want it to run time machine backups for my macbook pro that runs leopard. Is that an issue? The two versions of OSX?By the way of more information, I'm also going to use the mini as a centralized music and video source -- it'll hook up to my stereo system and my projector.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been getting these messages below in the list of feedback that Disk Utility generates during a "Repair Disk Permissions" run for at least 3 years now (through several OS updates). I am currently running 10.6.8 for the past several months. Is there an easy/SAFE way to repait this USER issue? I don't know if it is causing me any problems, but obviously it is not what it should be. [code]

Whenever my battery gets drained, my MacBook Pro turns off as if the battery was pulled out, I lose all my work when this happens. This started after I installed Snow Leopard, before, it would just go to sleep and my work is safe.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy laptop has been having problems track pad doesn't always work, runs slow, freezes. I replaced the hard drive on advice and that didn't help. I went to disk utility and verify and repaired disk permissions, that didn't help. I went to the erase tab and I clicked on "erase free space" thinking that would "defragment" free space, like a PC has.Now all my available memory is gone.I thought I was freeing up space. Now my apps don't work correctly and I can't reinstall because I don't have enough disk space.

I have just lost my user account that I normally use. It happened after I changed my name for my user account in the Finder. I clicked Get Info and changed the name from Helen Andersson to only Helen. and after that nothing is the same and i cant go back either that I know of. When I start the computer now everything that I had on my desktop and in my Itunes, Icalendar, addressbook, and Aperture are not there. I have found them (well at least what i had on my desktop and my itunes but not the other information), so they are still on the computer but I dont know how to get back to my normal user account.
When I check my System preferences Account I only have one account so its not like I made a new one and have two. But I can also see that the one I am using now that has nothing on it is made today.
So please if anyone can help me get my iMac to go back to the old user and all its settings the same way I would very much appreciate it. Because this user has nothing and I have to start everything from scratch even my internet settings I had to download again to be able to go on the internet. This user has nothing.

Question in the title - just wondering if I will need to upgrade to Leopard before Snow Leopard.

My Mac Book Pro forgets time, date and network password when battery runs flat. My software is up to date. The computer is about three years, but surely it shouldn't be necessary to change battery every three years?
