I might be getting a iMac G3 (for surfing and maybe itunes) and I was wondering if I should put tiger or panther on it? I had tiger on my iMac G4 before it died and I loved it. I was used to leopard before though (my imac G6). I don't know the processors or anything yet... but since I'm getting two of them for free I'm not really complaining. How much iMac G3 suck. I think they are adorable

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a new 21.5 iMac to replace a G3 iMac running 10.3.9. There is no Migration Assistant on the old Mac. I have attempted to figure out how to transfer the files from the G3 to my new Mac, but I can't figure it out. The new Mac says to insert the "Install Disc 1" into the old computer and to install "DVD or CD Sharing Setup" software. I can't find any such software on the only install DVD I received. (titled "Mac OS X Install DVD") (Nor on the accompanying "Software Install DVD.") Further, the new Mac says to open Migration Assistant on the old machine and follow instructions. (Hard to do when there is no Migration Assistant on that computer.) (I am attempting to transfer files via wireless network.) Any one know how to run Migration Assistant on an old iMac running Panter?

I am running Tiger now but it slows down if I fire up more than 5 apps at the same time. I was thinking Panther would run better. All I do is internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, listening to music and playing old games.

since buying my mbp, my powerbook has become pretty much redundant for anything other than word processing and internet use, at the moment its super slow because it has virtually no hd space left, so i have backed up, and want to reinstall the os, clean it up a bit and get it running the internet superfast to use when i am travelling, keeping my mbp on my desk for the rest of the time. I have a copy of both panther and tiger that came with the powerbook (i bought it a week before tiger came out and apple sent me it for free!), but it is currently running panther. now its a stock powerbook 12" 1.5 Ghz with 512 ram, and it wont need to run anything too complex: just word/safari/idvd/itunes, however it would be nice to have dashboard (i have got used to it on my mbp), but not essential.
I don't want to spend any more money on this thing, but want to know which would be faster...i have heard that tiger puts more strain on ram, but also that powerbooks run faster with tiger than with panther...which of these statements is true?
Is an "Erase and install" really that complicated. I don't have enough free space on my HD to do an "archive and install". I want to keep all my old Apps but dont have any of the installation CD's as all the apps were all on the computer when its was given to me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to load tiger onto my 12 inch PowerBook G4. The installation cd runs up to the first part when it asks you to restart. Then after the restart it up and comes up with a error message 'unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6,4".' This is not the complete message as it is to long to type out. I have tried every thing I can think of fsck, repairing permissions, removing an after market ram and I have tried lots else.

I'm having ongoing problems: frequent kernel panics, weird things happening to the display (display breaks up into a jumble of lines on occasion). I've done the usual troubleshooting: disk utility, apple hardware test, reboot in Safe. I want to try reinstalling the OS to see if this helps.
Problem: I don't have the install discs for OS 10.3.9 - about a year ago the logic board was replaced and I had the service swap in a new hard drive at that time and they loaded 10.3.9 when they did this. I don't want to buy 10.4 at this point - with Leopard coming out soon from what I understand, also want to make sure I can get the computer running properly again before I throw any more money at it. I've tried using borrowed discs to install 10.4, but I keep getting a message stating: "you cannot install this software on this computer". This has happened with 3 different borrowed install discs. Two of the borrowed discs were for iBooks, one was for a G5 iMac.
so i want to install tiger on my G3 600 mhz 256 mb RAM imac that has no dvd drive.i looked around the net and found that apple used to accept tiger DVD's and exchange them for CD's for a 10$ fee but thats no longer the case....
i also found that i could install tiger from another mac with a DVD drive using firewire disk mode...so i looked around my things and found an old firewire cable and hooked both machines up (imac and my mbp) and restarted the imac holding down the t key and so then the firewire symbol shows up on the imacs screen...well from what i understand the imac's HD is supposed to show up on my mbp desktop...this never happens.And ive tried it multiple times...so i dont know what the problem is..and ive tried it using OS 9 and 10.0 the OS's the machine came with..
I have an iMac G5 17" with 2GHz PowerPC G5 processor , originally had 512 MB RAM and has been upgraded to 2Gb RAM. The HD has been erased apart from the Tiger OS. I assume there is now 1Gb RAM in each slot ... not sure if the original 512 MB was split between two slots or if it was all in one slot. Have been using OS Tiger 10.4 up until now.
Recently I bought a RETAIL edition of Leopard 10.5.1 to install ( the one with the big X on the front) but after 10 minutes of the installation got the message "Install Failed ... Source Media Disc damaged" . I previously tried another Leopard installation disc and got the same message. I think it's unlikely that both installation discs are damaged; they are both new and came from reputable sources. I can reinstall Tiger without any problems. I have tried erasing the HD volume using Disc Utilities at the initial install stage but still get the same message .
A colleague has now advised me there have been problems with some iMac G5 machines with upgraded RAM when trying to install Leopard ... the Leopard installation disc does not like upgraded RAM.
Before I try and source some RAM to the original spec. ie 512MB, and then try again with Leopard, can anyone advise me if it might be worth taking out just one of the existing 1 Gb RAM modules ( I assume there are two there, I dont know for sure because the upgrade was done by a Mac Repair Shop ) and then trying the Leopard Install with just 1Gb RAM ? Or do I need to go back to the original 512Mb module(s) ?
ive got a Imac 17inch 1.0ghz with 215mb ddr ram. anyways, as Sheepy suggested, i upgraded her to a nice speedy 500GB 7200 Sata drive and dropped 1.5gb ram into her...... but lets take a step back. when i got her, she was full of dust and had tiger on her.. no dramas, tiger is good. anyways, i wanted to do a reinstall of tiger, and so grabbed my tiger retail disk and started her up, no dramas there either, ran disk util, repartitioned (the old disk) and started to install. the install never finished and then it just rebooted after about 80% through... The reboot came to the disk flashing with the osx face and a question mark. I try a few more times, with the same result, and also with Leopard, also with the same result, but the leopard install actually tells me after about 80% that "Install failed" try again? anyways, so i think its a shagged optical drive. i have a few lying around and i need to get in there anyways to upgrade the hard drive. installing the HD and the new Optical drive went fine, all works well.. and while i was there also installed 500mb ddr400 stick in the main memory non user slot. close her up, checked the heatsink matchup spots and there dry as a nuns nasty.. theres no paste on them, but kinda like a pad.. (which isnt even sticky either) anyways, i stick em back together (without) cleaning the pad stuff nor with applying any paste and boot her up. I insert the leopard disk to istall and it all goes fine, i re-partition the newspeedy 7200rpm sata disk and start the install. and again.... gets to about 90% and reboots. flashing smily face with alternating question mark.

I have a copy of Tiger that could be installed but I would need a DVD drive. Would I be better off buying a cheap copy of Panther online somewhere and just using that, or buying a DVD drive and installing Tiger? Or finding another way to install one or the other on my Mac?

View 21 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with upgrading a friend's laptop; I installed a MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8123 into a 12" 1.07gHz G4 ibook and we're having a problem; the cd-rom functions are working but it reads, then ejects dvds. The ibook was used and had Panther pre-installed; based on the condition of the interior when doing the install, I am assuming that it was a teaching unit, as there were loose screws and several random mismatched parts inside when I took it apart, so I am also assuming that this is a minimal install, probably set up by a student working with unix and OSX who probably left out the dvd drivers.
So here is the dilemma: I have a Tiger install DVD, but no Panther discs, and am trying to get the drive working and Tiger on the laptop. Any ideas where I can find a driver?

10GB Hard drive
Airport fitted
Att the moment it is running OS9 very smoothly indeed, and I don't have enough cash at the moment to upgrade it in any way. I would leave OS9 on it, however I have never used the operating system before, so wondered whether it would be wise to upgrade it to panther, as I have a copy lying around. My concern is that installing panther would leave the machine feeling much slower, as I'd rather have a faster machine that can't do as much than a machine can do most things but takes ages to open up the finder.
I just downgraded my iBook G3 600 from Tiger to Panther to see if it would increase the machine's performance. I did a clean install of Panther, upgraded to 10.3.9, and now for some strange reason, when I boot the machine (even cold) the fan comes on and constantly runs, which it never did before. However If I wake the machine from sleep the fan doesn't come on -- it only happens from a full boot-up (every time).

It has a 4GB drive in it that has Panther on it and everything is great... but the CD drive is broken. In that I paid $15 for the computer, and that its over a decade old, I really don't want to put money in to getting a new drive.
I do, however, want to upgrade the hard drive from 4GB to 80GB. I have a spare IDE drive, and a firewire case. Can I plug the hard drive into my iMac G4 and re-install panther on to it? Then just take the 80Gig drive out of the case and install it into the iMac?

Well i recently had to downgrade my powermac g5 with radeon x800xt to tiger....and now everything is updated..and when a box's option is clicked, a small box remains on the screen in the color of the thing clicked or highlighted. There is now a strange yet quiet squeeling noise coming from my computer only when i scroll. Also if i leave the mouse on the middle of my web page when i scroll, the words it travel over leave a tail of distorted boxes the size of the mouse arrow behind it. I dont know if its a setting, or if something hardware wise is failing, because it didnt happen when i had leopard in hours ago.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just obtained a PowerPC G4 Tower, but there was no hard drive in it. Because of this, I put in an older 20 gb hard drive I had just laying around. It is from an old Windows PC I had, but I don't know if thats a problem or not. Anyways, when I try to boot from the Tiger disc, nothing happens. I have tried holding down C when I turn the mac on, but that doesn't help at all. I just always get the mac icon with a question mark in the middle of the screen. I am just wondering, is this anything to do with the PC hard drive I put in the mac? Or is there something else that I am doing wrong? I just want Tiger to be installed on the computer.
