As you read this im haveing a terrible time on a sawtooth 400 that was hit by lighning in a storm and is now plauged with freezeing problems. So regretting to turn back to windows i made a quick steal of ebay for a dual 500 g4 + a super drive that burns dvds at 16x!! Im not no power user by anymeans i chat with adium x and use safari and do an occasinal bittorrent (legal of course) but the orignal problem with the g4 400 before the lighning struck it was VERRY SLOW! and I HATE waiting and it thought because of the dual prossesers it would move it along (and Low End Mac says pick a dual 500 over a single 700) so tell me if im gunna need to upgrade it.

I'm finally ready to upgrade from my Tiger OS to the new Lion. I have the disc, from Apple, to upgrade first to Snow Leopard and from there I'll immediately download Lion. I'm assuming there's no reason, and it's best not to open any files while I'm in Snow Leopard.
I have my Home folder backed up to an external hard drive. Is there anything else I should know or be aware of? Is there any special way to do this? I read something once about maybe doing a "clean install" of the new OS (Snow Leopard or Lion?). I don't really know what that is. Will that be necessary?

View 1 Replies View RelatedPosting for a friend who has just purchased Snow Leopard Box Set and wants to upgrade from Tiger. She was half way through the installation when she thought that Snow Leopard had not asked her to back up and she cancelled the installation half way through (not sure how, think she just turned off her Mac). She turned it back on but the only option it is giving her is too continue with the installation of Snow Leopard.
What she wants to know is will the erase all her data on her hard drive, or will she still have her files located in Documents/ Downloads etc when the installation is complete. I know when I upgraded from Leopard all these files were still present, I'm not so sure if it is the same with Tiger. Shes really worried about this as she has some valuable files in there.
I have an iMac G5 17" with 2GHz PowerPC G5 processor , originally had 512 MB RAM and has been upgraded to 2Gb RAM. The HD has been erased apart from the Tiger OS. I assume there is now 1Gb RAM in each slot ... not sure if the original 512 MB was split between two slots or if it was all in one slot. Have been using OS Tiger 10.4 up until now.
Recently I bought a RETAIL edition of Leopard 10.5.1 to install ( the one with the big X on the front) but after 10 minutes of the installation got the message "Install Failed ... Source Media Disc damaged" . I previously tried another Leopard installation disc and got the same message. I think it's unlikely that both installation discs are damaged; they are both new and came from reputable sources. I can reinstall Tiger without any problems. I have tried erasing the HD volume using Disc Utilities at the initial install stage but still get the same message .
A colleague has now advised me there have been problems with some iMac G5 machines with upgraded RAM when trying to install Leopard ... the Leopard installation disc does not like upgraded RAM.
Before I try and source some RAM to the original spec. ie 512MB, and then try again with Leopard, can anyone advise me if it might be worth taking out just one of the existing 1 Gb RAM modules ( I assume there are two there, I dont know for sure because the upgrade was done by a Mac Repair Shop ) and then trying the Leopard Install with just 1Gb RAM ? Or do I need to go back to the original 512Mb module(s) ?
I am attempting to load tiger onto my 12 inch PowerBook G4. The installation cd runs up to the first part when it asks you to restart. Then after the restart it up and comes up with a error message 'unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerBook6,4".' This is not the complete message as it is to long to type out. I have tried every thing I can think of fsck, repairing permissions, removing an after market ram and I have tried lots else.
View 4 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine gave me her old iBook G4 so I can fix it. Something was wrong with it (half the applications are missing, spotlight reindexes every time it restarts etc). So I'm just gonna reinstall everything from the ground up. My question is though, should I install Tiger again or would Leopard be better? The only thing I am afraid of is that Leopard would slow down the iBook since it's an older Laptop. Here are the specs:

CPU: 1.33GHz - PowerPC G4 (1.5)
512MB Ram

how to keep my Tiger applications (relatively) functional when I upgrade to Leopard. I have Carbon Copy Cloner. The question(s) is/are:
1. If I make a selective backup, what folders other than Applications to I choose from my current Tiger HD?
2. Once I know which Folders to backup, can I save as a dmg?
3. If I can save as a dmg, how do I restore the Applications to the Leopard system without running into "issues."
Is there anybody that has gone from Tiger to Snow Leopard and did this as an upgrade? Did all your music and pictures remain on your HD? Is it even possible to do it this way?
When I put my snow leopard disc in my computer, it has 1 option which says: Install Mac OSX and if I press that it says, press continue to restart your computer and installation will begin (or something like that). It's not clear to me if it's gonna erase my harddrive or not.
How do I back up or save my Tiger OS before I start the upgrade to Snowleopard? Will the install ask me or do I have to do that first? Also, if I don't save it willnI lose all my files? Music, pics, docs, etc?

I've got two Macs: one Tiger (iLife '06), and one Leopard (iLife '08) and I would like to upgrade both to Snow Leopard. I'm in the UK.I need help finding the best price/capability compromiseI have looked at the prices for doing this and come up with the following options:Most expensive optionBuy the 5-user Mac Box Set (Including OS X Snow Leopard, iLife 09, iWork 09) for 179This way I've got both machines running the latest everything.Next OptionBuy the Single User Leopard box set (including iLife/iWork 09) to upgrade the Mini to Leopard (?108.34) then buy the Snow Leopard family upgrade box to upgrade both machines to Snow Leopard (?39), total ?147.34. This way I have iLife/iWork 09 on the MacMini but not the MacBook.
Cheapest OptionBuy the Single User Leopard disc to upgrade the Mini to Leopard (?68.99) then buy the Snow Leopard family upgrade box to upgrade both machines to Snow Leopard (?39), total ?107.99.
here's the situation. I bought an awesome new SSD. The Vertex 2e 180GB, one of the fastest new drives out there today and also a good value. (Newegg, $360 after rebate)So, last night I do the hardware install. My machine is a late 2008 MBP Penryn. Lots of screws, but otherwise not too tough. After getting it in there and closing up the machine, I come to the realization that I let my friend borrow my Snow Leopard DVD a few months ago and never got it back. I have a full backup on my Time Machine hard drive which I was planning on using to install on the SSD. My understanding is that I needed to boot with the SL DVD and then I can restore from the Time Machine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought Snow Leapord when it was originally released but never installed it. But now I wanted to go ahead and finally get rid of Leapord, but was wondering if the copies of SL that Apple sells in the stores are updated already with the latest updates or are they just the same original CD from the initial launch?I would prefer to install SL which has all the latest updates and Boot Camp drivers already on the disk.I know it won't be exactly up to date, but fairly recent.

I know there are lots of threads on this forum about Windows 7 and Snow Leopard but the point of this board is to have discussion and here is my point of view....Snow Leopard will not be competing with Windows 7.Snow Leopard, as Apple have more or less said, is a maintenance release to pave the way for the latest hardware and software. Let's all get excited about Mac OS 10.7, this will be the OS that will be a contender to Windows 7.Windows 7 is more or less competing with Windows XP and Windows Vista. If Windows 7 does not have a large adoption, Microsoft is screwed. People love Windows XP and don't want to jump ship. Besides some new touch technologies built into the OS, what can Windows 7 offer people they do not already have with XP? Or better yet, with Vista?

Ever since I updated to Snow Leapord on my mac book pro the computer has started to lag badly. I have used onyx to see if that could fix anything but still running slow. Since I used to be a windows user I am used to just trashing everything and doing a fresh install. I have no idea if this is the best option for a mac. Before I think about reinstalling I would like to know how I can check what could be slowing my computer down. I only have a basic knowledge of macs so any advice where I should look would be great. (I am a power user of PC but got annoyed of it just not working)
View 4 Replies View RelatedJust recently updated my OS to snow leopard. Problem is I can no longer print to my Lexmark E322 via Ethernet directly from my computer. I don't have an external router and never had a problem printing directly from my iMac or from other computers to my printer. I did install the recent printer driver from the Lexmark site but no luck I've contacted them twice, both times helpful, but unfortunately I still can't print. I desperately need to print something soon as I have already wasted so much time on getting this thing going... lost sleep over this as I need to do a presentation on PAPER Maybe I shouldn't have upgraded my system to 10.6? My Lexmark has never failed me in the past... and I'm in no position to go out and buy another printer at this time.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy small business has an office iMAC and a Macbook Air both running 10.6.8. The two aren't synced in any way other than that the Air can access files from the iMAC's hard drive via the network. I have 2 email accounts on the iMAC's mail and just one of them set up on the Air.
I've just bought a new 15" Macbook Pro running Lion. I'd like to be able to sync some folders (but definitely not all), bookmarks, iTunes and mail accounts between the iMAC and the new Macbook Pro. Ideally I'd like to be able to access the shared/synced folders when I don't have an internet connection
What's the best method?
Snow Leapord doesn't have iCloud does it? If not, why the **** not?
Is it just easiest to set up the email accounts on the new MBP as normal and then use dropbox for the folders I want to share? Can I access the with no internet connection?
One other question, can i link a gmail account to my Apple mail?
Dave.
