OS X :: Spotlight Calculator Not Working / Broken Because Of 10.5.2?
Jun 22, 2006
My Calculator in Spotlight doesn't work anymore... I think its batteries might be dead? When I type in things like "4+4" the search works fine, but it doesn't give any math results. I think it stopped around the time I installed 10.5.2 but it may have been broken before that, I can't remember exactly.
You know how you can calculate numbers in spotlight? It used to give me the answers but now it just says no results found. Oh and I enabled the calculator via the terminal command that I found through this and restarted but still doesn't do calculations
I have searched this forum and the internet. My number pad on the right side of my keyboard works with everything EXCEPT the calculator. What did I do? cannot find anything anywhere to address just that. The numbers work fine everywhere else.
I did all the jumps to make sure on the system pref and the mouse off, holding my tongue just right and jumping five times...hitting the option key five times, the fn button and the clear button. the number work everywhere but on the calculator.
Using the calculator in OS X, enter "-2/3", (minus two divided by three). What do you get?
My calculator reports that answer as 0.666. (Positive NOT negative which is the correct answer). Is anyone else having the same problem? The calculator is giving out wrong answers! I have calculator version 4.2 running on 10.5.8.
when using apps in full screen mode the spotlight shortcut cmd+space doesn't work anymore.
E.g. safari in fullscreen mode, I tap cmd+space and nothing happens, if I move the mouse on top of the screen the bar appears and cmd+space is restoredÂ
Since the installation of Lion the decimal point isn't working alright. Not in the calculator and not in Numbers.Â
1. For instance when I type 1500 in the Calculator the displays says 1,500. That's not correct, in Europe it should be 1.500
No preferences in the calculator to change it. It worked well with Snowleopard. In system preferences Decimals is changed to ",", thousands is "."Â
2. Numbers. When I type 123456789 in numeric field it's changed in 123.456.789
If I change the last four digits to 2233 and accidently forget to change the points the point stays on the same place. It will say 123.452233 The same if you add a digit 123.456.789 will be 123.456.7892233
I have a new MacBook (Dec '08) and everything is working fine with one exception. When I type numbers into the calculator app they appear on the screen in slow motion with a nice long pause as each number typed is displayed. On our iMac the calculator app just flies along and has no problem keeping up no matter how fast I enter in numbers. Any ideas where to start on this one? Besides the standard software we have installed Microsoft Office and Handbrake.
It's not finding anything, not even files on the desktop. It's not indexing the drive. It's doing sweet eff-all, it's doing squat. I've restarted. Twice. MBP 17" C2D, 10.4.9 Spotlight is crucial to me for searching emails and PDFs.
My dictionary is synced to my spotlight, so when I type in a word, it defines it. But now it doesn't. It also loads only a few icons of the files I'm searching. I have MacBook. (2008)
I've been experiencing weird Spotlight mishaps lately. So I open spotlight and start typing, but nothing hapens, no search results appear. I have to close it and open again (like double click on it) and then all the results appear. Anyone hd the same problem and fixed it? it is so annoying
My MBP 17 (2.6 GHz, model 4.1) with  128 SSD isn't finding files which are definitely on my drive. Seem to only find files on the desktop, but not in sub folders for some reason. Any ideas why? Is it the SSD thats not indexing properly? How can I reset or fix this. Its becoming annoying
I've gone through some of the threads on here about this issue. I have tried adding my volume to privacy tab in spotlights preferences and removing it, but it wont even let me add it due to an error.Â
So I then tried command line indexing using sudo mdutil -E /, this just brings up the message in terminal no index.Â
I have tried everything to fix Spotlight search with no luck. I have deleted the index file in the root directory with out success. and tried several other ways of tring to re index my machine. As you can see from my screen shots. There is a file called Apps on the desktop. Yest when I search the desktop it cant find it.
a mate found a laptop on the road, no kidding, its been driven over, screen is less than happy. I wanted to plug it in to my bubble emac, but what cable am i looking for? and is it cheap? I have sound comming from it when you turn it on, and when u use the volume keys but thats it. Oh and when you use the mouse pad it leaves light trails on the screen.
I have a 2010 Mac Pro (5,1).8 core. 24 gigs or RAM.I'm having trouble with my Blackmagic Intensity Pro PCI card. I've installed all drivers, tried all the different PCI ports and still my MP fails to recognise it. In the system preferences panel, all options are greyed out and a message says "No Settings Required".At first I thought it'd be a faulty card, but then I tried the card on my friend's 2008 Mac Pro, and it works just fine. What could possibly be wrong? Are the PCI slots on my machine damaged?
I'm running 10.6.4 on an Intel 2.4Ghz MacBook with 2G RAM.
Time Machine & Spotlight have both stopped working. I back-up to an external HD which is fine, (checked with Disk utility and dragging and dropping stuff onto it).
I have tried to rebuild the Spotlight data by putting my HD in the 'privacy' and then removing it, but this hasn't worked. It just hangs on 'estimating time......'.
Time machine seems to go through the checking process ok but then can't write the data across to the external.I have reinstalled the system but it's just the same.
I got a new Macbook today, and installed the Mac OS X 10.5.6. It stalled so I shut down, and when I logged in again Finder and Spotlight doesn't work. Though my hard drive says is labelled Mac HD: Mac OS X 10.5.6 , I am continuously prompted that Spotlight closed unexpectedly. And when I try to reinstall the Mac OS X, the DVD no longer appears on the desktop and Finder too, cannot be opened for me to locate the DVD.
I have a slightly older MacBook. It was purchased when leopard was out, but has been upgraded to lion, with ram added.Had no problems with the OS until I installed the seagate diagnostics software about a week ago at their recommendation.During the install, the computer hung during the shutdown of the mandatory restart. It took me a pram reset to get the machine to start up again. Since then, the following has been a problem:
-Spotlight has no index and won't search.
-The computer will not shut down, have to pull the plug.
-Finale (which uses java runtime) doesn't work, and the auto install of java run time won't go in.
-Software update starts, but the percentage bar freezes after a moment.
I have run the system restore partition, which went in okay, but did not change anything.I have also followed the steps to uninstall the seagate diagnostic software. However the problem still persists.I'm guessing there is some sort of shut down script that is hanging the system, and preventing indexing from happening which prevents all of these other processes from happening.Does anyone have any ideas for what to do next?
Since the latest upgrade of 10.9.3 my and other office computers have problems with searches using spotlight and Finder search on internal, external and networked volumes. This is a big roadblock to our office workflow. Reindexing doesn't fix the issue and we can see clearly that the files we are searching for are there.
I just got to college and discovered that wifi didnt work (now I've learned that it only works with Firefox for whatever reason) so I just plugged into the ethernet port at my desk and it worked for a week or so and then it wouldn't work and I checked Network settings and it couldn't detect an ethernet cable. So I reset the PRAM and it worked... for a few hours, and now it doesn't. I don't want to have to do that every time I come back to my desk. What should I do about this? (and any suggestions on safari/chrome not working? I posted it in another subforum on here but I got nowhere)
I am having a problem where my mail App is not searching the entire body of the message any more. I installed Lion soon after it was released, and I believe that it has been working up until recently.Â
If I do a search, it won't search the message body, and gives me no option to search for "Message contains" (just "People" and "Subjects"). If search for subject "foo" and then click on the "Subject" pull down menu, it shows "Subject" and "Entire Message", but "Entire Message" is greyed out.Â
I've done a lot of web searching and most people with similar problems had problems with Spotlight. If I do a Spotlight search, it does find all of the mail messages correctly. Its just the Mail app that won't let me search.Â
I haven't tried re-indexing spotlight yet because spotlight seems to be working okay. Note that all of my mail accounts are "POP" accounts with the mail stored locally on my machine.Â
About every other time I start up my Mac I get a status bar on startupt (before the login). It takes a bit longer than normal to start up but eventually it does. However, on these occasions that my Mac acts like this I also encounter two (at least) other issues. The first is the volume control has a crossed-out symbol, and hence there is no sound whatsoever—internal speakers or external. Further, and perhaps more troubling, is Spotlight does not work; I attempt to search but I only have the option for web results.Â
I also notice some general slow down and it sounds like the Mac is always working on something (fans aren't running full blast though). This led me to open Activity Moniter, which revealed and absurd amount of Wired memory (about 6 GB out of 8). Â
What is going on here? I've tried resetting my PRAM and booting in Safe mode; however, I am having the embaressing problem of not actually accomplishing those tasks (I think). I hold down the correct keys but my bluetooth keyboard doesn't seem to be responsive early enough for the keystrokes to register.Â
I'm using the thin aluminum USB external keyboard and suddenly my 8ik, diagonal of keys stopped working (now I'm using my laptop keyboard). Anyone know if this is typically a sign of a broken keyboard, or a user issue?
