Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I have a external monitor plugged in and I use my Macbook Pro (2009 Uni) as a secondary monitor. Randomly, the macbook screen just goes black. If I move my mouse on to the macbook screen, I can see the mouse cursor, but the rest of the screen is black! It's driving me mad!
The only fix is to un-plug the monitor adaptor or adjust display arrangements. It's really cramping my style.
iMac 27 the screen goes black at random times. If left for a time and by pressing ctrl, Shift Eject, the screen comes back and can remain on for the rest of the day. However, the next day the same thing happens. Â

The screen randomly turns black without any major reasons. It doesn't seem to be a sleep mode/screen saver thing as the music continues to play on. I can adjust the volume or pause the music with the keyboard but the screen just won't turn back on. I have to shut it down using the power button and it happened several time the last couple days. Anyone else experience the same thing and got a solution?
View 4 Replies View RelatedDo not want a nuisance to escalate into a serious problem thru benign neglect. Random black screen -- Turn monitor off then on, and all comes back fine. No loss of power in machine, no fan quirks, no overheating. Is it the Monitor? or the graphics card?

Ok I did some updateing and now get a black screen after booting. Here is what I did WAS running 10.5.8 Updated to 10.6 using a USB Downloaded and installed 10.6.3 Combination update (everything worked great) Installed iLife 2011 Downloaded latest update for iLife because is said I could not use it unless i updated.Â
Restarted fine logged in, showed display background. Then all black. Rebooted, black screen. Reboooted again, Black screen.Â
The issue only came up when I did the software update for iPhoto, iMovie,iWeb,iEverything else.. Â
I have a 3.06 intel core 2 duo with 4 gig ram and 500 gb free space. Backed up on time machine on seperate HDD still plugged in to USB. Since I don't have USB selected as a boot drive can I still boot from the install 10.6 USB?Â

I have an iMac 21inch, Late 2009. I found after it was runing really slow that my hard drive was failing. It told me there were SMART errors on the drive. The computer is out of warranty and I'm in the middle of no where so i have no Mac store to take it to. I bought a new drive, same model, and installed it into the computer. It turns on fine, but after the Apple logo and spinning coge wheel the screen flashes, shows the blue back ground like its going to load the desktop and then goes black.Â
I've tried connecting an external monitor to it and shows up like an extended display. I've tried connecting it to another Mac, a Mini, and the Mini can boot off the iMacs hard drive just fine. If it Target Disk mode the Mini and boot the iMac I get the same flash of blue desktop then it goes black. Â
This is where it gets weird though, I'm sure your thinking, ok the screen is going bad... BUT, I boot off an Ubuntu CD, or the AHT disk and it loads fine and has no turning black. Its only when booting into the Mac OS or the installation disk. Â
One last note is that when its at the black screen and I'm sure its loaded the desktop, if I hold the power button down for about 3-4 seconds, till I hear a click. I then press the button again right away and the screen flashes on showing me the desktop and everything, for about 2 seconds... Â
Every once and a while, usually when my MacBook is running on it's battery, the screen will show a black screen for nearly only a millisecond or two. It's not too bothersome, and it usually blinks back to normal before I can notice it, but nevertheless I don't want it, and from what I can recall, this only started happening after I installed the Snow Leopard Graphics Update. Is anybody else getting these problems on their MBPs or MBs? MacBook config details in my sig.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery few weeks my iMac will suddenly freeze, the screen going black or white or pink etc. The only way I can get the computer back is to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. Then after a restart everything is OK for a few more weeks. Usually it occurs when I am on the internet. I click on something and suddenly the computer is frozen. I am on OS X 10.6.8 and usually use Safari. Ironically when I opened this forum 5 minutes ago there was a similar sounding problem at the top of the list!

I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

I have random hangs in OS 10.6.6, I have been noticing these hangs *more* after a period of inactivity (screensaver, after inactivity of 20 or more minutes) , but I have had the system hang on me while I am using it actively as well.   OS 10.6.6 has been on this drive since 7/2011 , without hangs but I recently upgraded Firefox to 10.0.2, - perhaps a factor?Â
Energy save set to never for sleep on either CPU or display.  I do put to sleep if I am leaving for a while.Â
FYI On Launch, my MacPro opens Mail , iCal and Firefox. The Mac is a January 2007 Mac Pro Quad core 2.66gh.  I never had a single hang with the computer until this. Â

Since I use Snow Leopard I get randomly (around 1 to 10 ) freezes. When I get it I can click some applications but can't make changes in it. The beachball keeps spinning for some seconds and after the wait I can just continue working. I first thought it was Firefox, because it almost everytime happens when I am browsing the web, but I get the same with Safari.
It's getting verry annoying now :-(
I already checked:
- Repair disk
- Repair disk permissions
- Run Apple diagnostics
Repairs my 1.5 year old mbp already had:
- 2x keyboard
- Topcase
- Logicboard
- Superdrive
Every now and then, i get these random flash of black near the top of the screen. Its like a quick split second blink. I never had this problem in regular leopard. I'm not sure if I have a faulty GPU but I think i might too cause when I'm on battery power 9400m, the graphic performance goes down.
View 12 Replies View RelatedInstalled Snow Leopard on my 1st gen Mac Pro and had nothing but trouble: random crashes and re-boots that have gotten so bad that now it crashes during boot up. Part way through the spinny wheel you get after the boot-up Apple logo either half the screen goes orange (!) and it crashes, or the centre of the screen corrupts and it crashes or I get the multi-lingual grey screen of death. Same happens if I boot from the Snow Leopard DVD. Pretty unhappy as you can imagine: can anyone suggest anything? I've tried re-seating the graphics card , blowing out the dust and I've rotated all the memory: makes no difference.
View 21 Replies View RelatedMy hp deskjet 5850 will only print in black with snow leopard. I contacted hp and they said there is not updated driver since all the hp drivers are included in the snow leopard dvd. When I go to the Apple support to find the printers supported in snow leopard the 5850 is not listed. I tried changing the "Print Using" catagory to Generic PCL Laser Printer like the Apple site suggested but still won't work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMiddle of last month I bought a 20" IMac. Everything was fine up until about 1 week ago when the screen went black. I clicked on the mouse button several times only to have a password box pop-up. After filling in the response, all was fine.
Next, same scenario but the password box didn't appear any more. The only way to get the screen back was by a forced restart.
I turned off the screen saver, set the 2 controls in energy server to off, unchecked the box at the bottom left & put "auto login" to to on the Accounts window.
Problem continued.
Next move was to zap the pram, this was 2 days ago. The screen didn't go black but often asked for my pw. It's now back to its beginning phase which is a forced restart !!
I was told that it was due to Leopard 10.5.2 & am considering going back to 10.5.1

DVD disk: Leopard 10.5 Retail install
Hard drive: dead (spins with clicks).
With regular startup I get the flashing question mark and can hear the failed hard drive click and spin. After getting the DVD to boot in the drive (it doesn't suck it in right away), I get an apple logo and pinwheel like I should, but after about 30 seconds it goes to a black (blank) screen and the DVD spins down, but not all the way. The computer is still on, but nothing happens.
Oddities:
<>If I start it with an iMac 10.4 DVD I can boot to the install screen just fine, but can't install because it's an iMac DVD. I can erase and partition the drive fine (not the dead one, another one I have).
<>Safe mode boot does the same thing, but takes 20 times as long to boot
<>Retail OSX 10.4 DVD does not boot at all, but that one might be for PowerPC computers. I get the flashing question mark folder.
I have some spreadsheet data as comma-separated values text files (.csv), and some .xls files as well, but when I open them in NeoOffice or a spreadsheet application all accented characters are being displayed as black diamonds with question marks in them. In TextWrangler, they appear as screwy letter combinations, no diamonds in that case. Someone viewing the same file in Windows though sees the proper characters. I don't understand character encoding very well at all. How I can open or convert these files to use the proper encoding? I'm opening them in NeoOffice as UTF-8 but the Mac's native encoding of Latin-1 or whatever is messing things up.

When viewing a page of anything, my screen reverts to the previous screen I was viewing. Also when looking at a map with zoom and out zoom the controls are of their own mind and always go to the max adjustment bypassing the incremental changes I want. Its very annoying.Â

After updating from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1 I was not able to use screen sharing any more to connect to a machine running 10.5.8. If I click on "Share Sreen..." in finder, by default my short name is used (e.g. jwhite) Using the correct password I was faced with the message: (Authentication failed to "...".) Please verify you have entered the correct name and password. This worked fine in Leopard to Leopard. Snow Leopard to Leopard did not work. Trying a lot of things I managed to use screen sharing without a problem by using the full name (e.g. John White instead of jwhite)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 24" 2007 iMac, the first aluminum ones, 4Gb of Ram and a recently upgraded HD to 1Tb (from a 320Gb failed drive). Recently, I have noticed that under some active usage, such as playing World of Warcraft or Excel, the screen will start to turn completely off for 10 seconds, and then back on for 10 seconds. It will continue to do this for about 3 hours, turning on and off every few seconds or 15 seconds. It will mostly turn completely dark but would also sometimes flicker. The curious thing, is that if I continue to keep playing, the screen would cease doing this after about 3 hours and then be completely normal and fine, but the next night.
The symptoms would repeat itself, and would consistently go away after active usage (3 hours or so). Imagine this, as if the iMac itself needs to be "warmed up" for 3 hours before normal usage. It would also appear that if I hit the machine (or tap it), this may sometimes bring a dark screen back to life for a few seconds. I plan to bring it to support, but I just want to get some ideas from you guys as to what this can possibly be.
Some of my guesses:
1) It cannot be software as physically hitting it or my dog barking would affect the rate and speed of the random turn Ons and Offs.
2) It could be a loose connector from my recent transportation of it while upgrading my HD, but then why would it become normal after 3 hours of usage?
3) Maybe something to do with RAM or video RAM? It is faulty, and thus only prolong heavy usage would "run it in" for the session? After not using it for a while, it goes back to its failed state?
My screen periodically starts flashing and getting huge white lines that run down the screen when I play games (only have crysis maximum edition) but then it stops and goes back to normal. Ive noticed that it doesnt happen all the time, and not at certain moments in the game (i.e. happens at one point but doesnt happen again at that same point a different time) and it will stop if i go and look only at a wall. Is this normal or is my MBP F'd?

I've had my 27" iMac (3.06GHz) for a few weeks now and yesterday I noticed some weird artifacts appearing on the screen, very randomly.
They will pop up all over the screen but if I "Show desktop", they will go away for a bit but sometimes reappear again in different areas of the screen. I restarted the computer but that only temporarily fixed the problem.
Anyone know what's causing this and how to fix it?
I have never witnessed anything such as this on a Mac before, so I'm completely at a loss. It's hard to replicate this problem, as it seems to be totally random--sometimes it'll happen when coming back from sleep, but more often, it just happens in the middle of regular tasks. While I'm using the computer, the screen will suddenly go black for several seconds, and I simply have to wait for it to return.

Does anybody know what's going on here? (see pics) This happens sometimes and I can't figure out why. If i move a window over it, the corrupt parts stay the same underneath if that makes any sense.
It's a MBA REVA, and i had the logic board replaced by Apple for free in January in the hope to reduce some heat issues. But it didn't really work. Other than that the machine is in top order.
