I was using my Imac and i clicked on a random place and my whole computer froze. The mouse wasnt moving. it was as if it was a still picture. This is the second time it happens. any ides what it can be?

Yesterday I started my iMac G5 and after about 15 minutes, it froze. It's happened before but I can always move the mouse. This is the first time it has actually properly froze. After about 2 minutes, I got a very loud whirring noise. I left it for about 5 minutes and it didn't die down. It has now been left for about 24 hours with the occasional turn on to see if it's fixed. No joy. Now it won't even turn on.
View 7 Replies View Relatedjust got my imac last week and i am using a wifi router (netgear) to connect to the internet. certain websites will make safari freeze. i can still quit safari, but once i try to open it up again it cannot connect. i check my network preferences and it finds my network, i try to connect but no luck. i know ive got the right password and everything, and once i restart the machine it automatically finds and connects to my network and im good to go again until it freezes and i go through the process again. ive called apple and gotten no working solution. they told me to reset safari and clear caches which i have done and that hasnt helped. looking for any advice you've got. also, i was thinking about picking up an airport router. could that possibly solve my problem? is it possible that the imac doesnt communicate well with the netgear router?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIt's avihappy again and I have another survey for you all. As you can see, there is now an iMac 4850 EFI firmware update available via software update. So can you: Find a test that will cause the iMac to freeze up. Do the update. (make sure you actually run the firmware updater tool, it may not run automatically when you install the update from Software Update.) Switch to WiFi. Do the test again. See if the iMac freezes!
View 24 Replies View RelatedIt seems that prior updates worked. However, when I update to 10.6.8 my system will freeze. The only that that moves is my cursor.I can be on the web, scrolling. It will happem when new email is being down loaded. I can be working on th PC side and will experence it. I ran the "Disk" repair. But even after the run is done the system will work for a short while and the freeze. Now I can reinstall 10.5 "Snow Lepoard" and not update to the latest "Package" update and all works well. So the main question is "What gives?". Its very troublesome. Is there any soulition to this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new IMac 24" and it has started to freeze and not respond. At one point it would only work in Safe mode. After working with Apple for several hours, we did a complete ease and reload of the OS. It would only install the first disk. We called Apple again and made an appointment at the local store. Brought it in and it booted right up. He even reinstalled the OS for us. We brought it back home, plugged everything in and it worked. It then started having the same issues after 4 days. I forced shut it down and unplugged everything. Plugged in the keyboard and mouse and everything works. The only think we have is a Lexmark printer - X5320. The strange thing is everything was working fine for 3 months and with my Mac Mini before that. Could it be a power issue? It is plugged into a APC UPS. All hardware tests pass.

Basically, while I'm working doing everyday things like browsing, coding, iMovie etc...my screen just freezes and there are squares of white noise pixels scattered everywhere. I can see the mouse cursor as I move but the image is so distorted that I dont know what Im clicking. Restarting the machine fixes the problem.

My iMac has been running very very slowly for about 2 weeks. I am talking very very slowly. It seems to be processing time. I will be in word, move the cursor and it will take a few seconds to get there. Sometimes I have to wait a minute after I click on something for the cursor to catch up, and (hate to say it) even 2 minutes. That's like a millennium in Mac time.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've seen so many posts about this, but with the limited time I have between system freezes, in desperation I come here. I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on desktop IMac. I have plenty of memory, but don't know how to check the hard disk space (I'm an ubernoob). I've run a couple of the mac maintenance programs still to no avail. I get intermittent SBBOD where NOTHING responds and have to do a hard reboot. Doesn't matter what applications are up, as even startup is very slow when in SBBOD mode. Rebooting, then, doesn't resolve the issue. It runs fine when the SBBOD is not present.

Good evening, all. I searched the forum but didn't see anything related to what I'm asking. Does anyone have any problems playing back DVDs? I have to remember to take DVD player out of full-screen playback because it will sometimes freeze and I have to power down. In addition, sometimes while I'm viewing a DVD de-interlaced, the screen is garbled. Switching the de-interlacing off gives me the picture back. I took a picture of what it looked like the one time it locked up on me.

I have a mac pro running leopard (purchased in 2/08) and it was running beautifully for almost 2 months with no hangs, crashes or freezes. Then, for some reason, today when I turned it on, it would not boot. It would get to the apple logo, then just sit there for a few minutes, then reboot itself and the same thing would happen.
I pulled out the ethernet cable, unplugged all usb except keyboard/mouse and it would then (sometimes) boot into the system, log me in and present me with the UI. I then quickly performed a soft reboot and it would get to the desktop. However, I can only use it for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes before it would completely lockup. The clock freezes, the mouse freezes and it just sits there forever. I have tried booting into Vista (BootCamp) and it also freezes before startup is complete....................
never had a problem with a freezing mac in 5 years of mac use so wouldn't like it to start now. Whilst using firefox this morning it froze, force quit wouldn't work, entire screen froze. Keyboard shortcut wouldn't allow me to shut down, so I had to shut down via the on/off switch.
When I came to switch it on again it loads up to the log in screen, the mouse moves around the screen but when I click on my username nothing happens. I've taken out all USB cables, switched wireless keyboard and mouse on and off etc, restarted, no joy. Next I tried to startup with the c key and install disc, but again I got to the log in screen and nothing happened. I'm assuming as I can't log in and get to a desktop that is why it's not allowing me to start with the disc?
A few months ago I upgraded my EFI Firmware on my Uni-MBP 13" to 1.7 and was getting constant Freeze and stalls. I then found out that it was because of the EFI firmware, so I went back to 1.6 and now its working fine.
Have apple fix this problem with a new upgrade like 1.8 of some sort? And if I was to Upgrade to SL would they have this problem as well?
So my MBP i7 with a 500GB 7200 rpm disk. The system has been freezing randomly for up to 20 - 35 seconds at a time, the same as many other people on here. i have used superduper to clone my disk to a usb hd. I have not had 1 single freeze so far running of the usb drive. I boot back to the internal drive and with in minutes i get a freeze. This is just what i have found, would be good if anyone else with the freeze issue could try the same.

I have tried repairing permissions, rebooting, verify disk and onyx. I do not have many apps installed, no login items, 5 items on desktop, 107gb left on my hd, no antivirus, and nothing processor or memory intensive running. Also, when I try to delete custom prefpanes system preferences freezes with the spinning wheel. Some apps (mainly keynote) often freeze unexpectedly causing me to lose all my work.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI do not have ubuntu, but I have seen people talking about booting with and customizing rEFIt here, and this seems like a knowledgeable place to seek advice. So here's my problem: I have a macbook pro on which I have OSX 10.5.8 and Windows7 x64 (installed through bootcamp 3.1). I downloaded rEFIt and tried to modify the rEFIt interface following the instructions here: [URL] After trying to change the background (hostname.bmg) to a different image rEFIt opened to show the new background (.bmg file) but nothing else (no mac or windows logos like previously) so I can't select an OS to boot to!!
I can still hold down the option key during startup to bring up the regular bootcamp menu which allows me to choose between my bootcamp partition (with windows 7) and what is now called the rEFIt partition (previously called Macintosh HD before I installed rEFIt) So I CAN boot to windows, but cannot boot into OSX without going through rEFIt, which is not showing me any options to choose from. The modifications I made to rEFIt were through the rEFIt.const file in the rEFIt folder in the efi folder on my Mac partition. This const file now reads:

I can see and read my mac partition in windows, but cannot save to it to reverse these changes I made to the .const file. I was also hoping that the timeout in rEFIt would automatically talk me into OSX even though I cannot see any icons, but after 5+ minutes waiting on rEFIt nothing happens. Also, I made sure not to list badges under hideui so they should still be shown...........

Today, i've been searching about the history of computer viruses and i found a website that made Safari 3.2.1 freeze with an infinite beach ball so i had to force quit it. My Safari has AdBlock enabled and for security reasons i deleted all my cookies.
