OS X :: Finder Icon Missing / Finder Became Invisible After Relauncing The Dock

Oct 1, 2009

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.

So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use. When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.

I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?

Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now. When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

MacBook :: Escape Key Dinging - Requires Pressing Command Key To Reset?

Feb 14, 2009

I am new to my unibody Macbook. I bought it as an open box item at Best Buy. I was desperate for a new computer and I had and still have little cash. Therefore, I am hoping someone has an easy fix for my odd issue. It seemed to be fine for two or three weeks and making my life so much more fun, now it works but is annoying.

Now that I can't return the machine, it is making the "bonk" noise in succession as if I am repeatedly pushing the escape key with no window open. Other times it will not let me click the mouse when this happens and if I press the apple key it seems to be fine, almost as if it resets an works like there is no problem. I can't find any pattern to when this happens it seems completely at random.

There is no odd esoteric software on my computer and I haven't added any weird downloads on it either. I just have been importing music and photos so far. I haven't had it long enough to get it too screwed up.

I did reinstall Leopard trying to clean out anything that may have been causing this. It didn't help. I downloaded a patch from apple to fix an issue early unibody models had with the track pad. This didn't help anything either. I am almost wondering if there is a glitch in my escape key. I don't have apple care, at least I don't think I do, as I didn't pay for any extra warranty.

OS X :: Running Terminal Command / Connecting To Ssh Through Dock Icon

Aug 18, 2010

I've use a terminal command to create a SOCKS proxy through my ssh server (ex. ssh -D 2008 -l user server.here), to which I am then prompted to enter a password, and everything is connected. For the sake of ease of use (as I need to do this frequently), is there any way I can make a dock icon, or something along those lines, so I can just click it, it runs the command, I enter a password (or maybe even not?) and it's all set? I have tried setting up a workflow in automator to run a shell script, but it is unsuccessful, leaving me with "Run Shell Script failed: Pseudo-terminal will not be allocated because stdin is not a terminal."

MacBook Pro :: SUDO Command - How To Remove A User Using Terminal

Mar 30, 2012

So I just inherited from my coworker's MacBook Pro. I then decided to transfer all of my files and realized that the root folder was still on his name. I changed the User's name in "System Preferences" but that did not change the root folder's name. I then went to Terminal and tried to change the folder's name using the "mv OldFoldersName NewFoldersName"  and the prompt said Permission denied. I then used "sudo mv OldFoldersName NewFoldersName". After restarting my computer, all the files were gone and I landed on a "LION first time USE" type of Desktop. All my files are gone and terminal shows me two users' names under /Users/ => OldUser and NewUser.

What can I do to recover my old files? What can I do to repair my Mistake and only have one User?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Show All Folders In Finder, Terminal Command

Apr 29, 2012

When using finder and browsing through folders, it will only show me a list of recent folders. I use Lion. If I want to see all the folders or open up a less recent folder, I have to click "show all" at the top right hand corner. It gets tedious when I'm dragging and dropping files to different folders when I have to constantly click "show all" just to see the folders I want. Is there a way to override this function through the terminal? Is there a command I can use?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Terminal Command To Give Admin User Privileges In Finder?

I've since forgotten the command and wish to use it for a new admin user since my old admin has gremlins on a number of apps but new users are not troubled in same way. I can't beleive Apple would default to requiring a password to make/edit an alias but there you go the distrurbing trend towards their total control of my desktop advances… not to mention User SysPrefs leaking over from another user for keyboard shortcuts and sounds?

OS X :: Can't Remove Anything From The Dock

Jul 13, 2009

for a while now I've had a problem that is driving me up the wall. I cannot remove an icon from my dock (as in dragging it off or right click, and hitting "Remove from Dock") without the Dock locking up for a second, crashing, and restarting.

On restart, the icon I wanted to remove is still there.

Here's a video:
[URL]

I tried going into ~/Library/Prefernces and deleting com.apple.plist and the other db plist file but besides resetting my dock preferences, the problem persists. Do you think it could be an issue with Dock.app itself (on my system)?
