OS X :: Key Strokes To Highlight File Selection?
May 28, 2009
I've been a PC user all my life until last week when I got an IMac and I am still learning how to use it. How do you highlight files you want to select just like how you do in windows when you hit shift key and the arrow key? It does but it highlights it one by one and I have to keep on hitting the arrow key.

Still getting acquainted with MacOS X here, so bare with me. Is it possible to highlight multiple files and get the collective file size? As a Windows user, I would have thought highlighting the files and select "get info" would have done the trick, but instead it opened up a series of individual windows for each files. And btw, is there a faster way to close all 40 opened info windows at once?

I'm looking for a free or inexpensive, quality software program that can record and log the key strokes, web, and email usage of my family for MAC OSX. That functions invisibly. Must include remote monitoring.

We cannot log into our 2010 iMac OS X. The wireless keyboard is registering each key stroke as 1-5 dots (cannot see letters as it is the password login section to access the desktop). The delete key does nothing. The left / back arrow key addes more dots as does the front arrow key. The only way to get out is to cancel out so we are stuck.

Is there anyway to highlight an already read and saved message in Mac Mail? To clarify, when I open Mail I have a window that shows all my incoming messages, both unread and read. Sometimes after I read a message I want to be able to go back and quickly find it. This could be several days later and in the meantime I have 50 more saved messages and trying to find it is difficult. Is there some way to highlight it in color or flag it so I can easily go back and find it? I am running 10.5.8 although I doubt that has any bearing on anything.

That's what I see when my mouse is over any menu item and when it's not over any menu item. I've lost menu highlight on the menu bar and the contextual menu (via right click on files and folders) My system is running OS 10.5.2. I've already tried fixing disk permissions. It's like my mouse has gone into stealth mode. Interface can no longer detect my cursor is hovering over them. E.g. Hovering over a web link doesn't highlight that it's a link and status bar below doesn't print the url address of that link. Last thing I could remember was telling Opera 9.25 to give me a pop up regarding web cookies. That's when I lost menu highlight.

I was able to cast a spotlight on an app in my dock, and then the rest of the screen became dim. For example, my Pages app was once open; after I clicked on it, along with pressing some other key (I assume), the Pages icon had a "light" shine on it in the dock, and the open window for the app moved to the center of the screen as the desktop darkened. It somewhat resembles what happens in Mission control. After having not seen that feature in many months, it happened again a little while ago by accident, but with a different app. What is this feature called? And what keyboard shortcuts are necessary to make it happen?Â

Replacing labels with tags is not at all useful particularly for the large market segment of over 50's audience. Those small coloured dots do not work for me distinguish events in my different calendars. Can MAC please bring back labels so that we ca see all our appointments as it was below.

I can't figure out how to highlight and move multiple files from my local hard drive to an external drive. Is this simply not possible with Apple's OS? Seems too ridiculous for that to be the case. I can move individual files by Command+dragging the file, but it won't let me do that with multiple files.
I can move the parent folder, with the contents, but that's not what I want to do, since I only want some of the files within it. What I've been doing so far is highlighting and copying the multiple files and then deleting the originals afterwards. But this is a major time waster for me. This must be possible, how could they make an OS that doesn't allow this?

For some reason, double clicking the trackpad button or with one finger on the trackpad itself (tap-tap, essentially), does not do what it used to.
For instance, if I go to the URL box/bar on the top of Safari double clicking no longer highlights the entire URL string so I can delete it. I manually have to drag from one side to the other, or click the little website icon in the left of the box.
In every single application, double clicking (or tapping) no longer highlights text. It's a pain to always have to drag all the time.

My work computer id acting up. I am running Mac OS X, using a standard, single-button mouse. The problem is, it doesn't want to simply click once and double clicks at random times. I'm not sure when it will happen next, but it's getting annoying. Also, it seems the computer is having trouble highlighting text. When I scroll over text to highlight, it will not stay highlighted. This makes quick copying and pasting impossible.
Keep in mind, this is a work computer and I would not be able to directly manipulate files. Also, our "IT" person usually guesses until she gets it right.
Note: I know that there are probably threads related to this topic, but I did not find any in my searches. I guess the forums match the machines when it comes to not finding what you need.

Apple in their wisdom feels that their emails are so important they should be highlighted in mail. i dont agree and do not need a highlight on their latest sale email. Â
i followed the support web instructions of removing the 'hidden' rule from mails preferences (funny it was not visible but did remove the 'apple news rule') Â
however, even after restarting mail - emails from apple are still highlighted (highlit?) ...Â
how do i turn off this annoying big brother 'feature'Â

I run a site and accept paypal as a payment. Sometimes i have bad customers and try and open disputes "unauthorised use" after they receive the item. Obviously i dont want to deal with these people again and paypal dont allow you to block them in future.
But wondered if there was any tools in apple mail that highlights a customers email address so i know they are old customers who caused me trouble. Obviously i wont be able to remember all their email address. But it would be nice if there was a way to filter or highlight the email address so i know to refund them and not deal with them

At first i thought this was simply a firefox issue, then i noticed it was accross all of my programs. I can select the regular menu, but unless I use the arrow keys, I cannot scroll down the menus into sub-menus as I had once done. For example, I used to be able to single click on say the image menu item in PS Cs3 then I would have a highlighted bar follow my mouse down (just like using arrow keys) this would open sub menus as it came across them, allowing me to access them. Now i am running into the issue that I have to hold down the left mouse button or I cannot select the sub-menus, unless using arrow key, which tends to be inconvienient. Has anyone come across this issue and if so how can I fix it? I am running permissions repairs right now and will execute the weekly, daily and monthly scripts as well and see if it helps, but if someone has insight please let me know.

I just started using Aperture and I am befuddled. I'm working in a library that was originally created by iPhoto but was exported by Aperture, in case that's relevant. What I'm seeing is that every time I try to do a "pick" in a stack, the selection gets reset. It doesn't matter whether I use the keyboard shortcut or the menu. The browser scrolls back to the beginning of my library and suddenly the first four images are selected. Always.Â
The same weird thing happens if I have a search filter applied. I hit clear on the search filter and suddenly the selection is reset.Â
