OS X :: Snow Leopard - Connecting To Windows File Share?

Aug 31, 2009

On tiger, I could connect to windows file shares quite easily, if I recall:

1. in Finder, use "Go" -> "Connect to Server"
2. Enter smb://servername/sharename
3. Click "Connect"

In Snow Leopard, I do this and I'm prompted for a login, but it WILL NOT take my windows domain / username and password.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Internet Is Slow After Downloading Windows 7 Files?

May 12, 2012

Last night, I downloaded Parallels onto my computer and everything was fine.  I then downloaded the Windows 7 files from the Microsoft Store and the download speed was excellent -- took about 30 minutes to download ~300 GB of files.  After attempting to click on these files to open them, they wouldn't open, and I realized that I should have purchased through the Parallels online store.

Shortly after this, I realized that my Internet speed was very slow, maybe 2-3 KB/sec.  I uninstalled Parallels and cleared the Windows files from the Downloads screen, but Internet was still slow. Installing Windows can wait for another time (and maybe I'll just use Boot Camp instead).  For now, all I want is to get my fast Internet speed back.

OS X :: Can't View Files On IMac From Windows XP Share?

Jul 16, 2009

I recently convinced my Mom to buy a Mac. We got her a new 20" iMac and she loves it. I'm in the process of transferring over all of her files from her PC over a network share, but I'm having trouble viewing those shared files.

I am connecting to the PC through the smb:// protocol and I can see the share... but not the files in it. I've double checked the permissions and everything seems to be in order, but no avail. I even checked the firewall settings on both computers.

I myself have a desktop PC and a MBP setup. I have no problem accessing any shares on my PC from my MBP, and I've done nothing different with my Mom's setup.

Windows On Mac :: Boot Camp SL On Mini - Share Files?

Oct 26, 2009

I just ran the Boot Camp utility and installed Windows 7 on my Mac Mini. Everything seems to work pretty well. From Windows I can see the Mac partition and from Mac I can see the Windows partition. Each OS has it's own Users file structure. Now, I recently converted over to Mac this month and have over a decade worth of files from my PC that I plan to migrate over. Best-case, I would like to be able to easily access those files no matter what OS I am using. Should I create a 3rd partition for just files? Pick either the Mac or Windows partition to be the master for the files? Can each OS easily use a different folder for the Users files (I know I was able to do it with Vista in the past, not sure about SL).

Software :: Leopard Won't Share Files?

Mar 30, 2009

I just upgraded to Leopard, and I can't get Windows file sharing to work. I followed the instructions, which seems simple enough, but it just doesn't work.

I went to the Sharing pane, turned File Sharing on, enabled SMB sharing via the Options button, and set up users with read/write access to the desired folders. I also set the firewall to be wide open. From my windows machine I can ping the Mac, but if I enter the IP address or the Mac computer name in the "Map Network Drive" window on the PC, it doesn't find the network path. And if I browse for servers to connect to, the Mac doesn't show up, and there is no WORKGROUP or other entries.

OS X :: Can't Share My Scanner In Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Dec 8, 2009

I know that snow leopard was supposed to make scanner sharing easier, but this just isn't happening for me!! Its really odd.

I have two imacs (24" and 27" brand new one). The scanner is hooked up to the 27" imac and both computers are running 10.6.2

The 24 is networked to the 27. We share files and can share printers. I have had no problem with me printing to his computer and him printing to mine.

We also can both move files back and forth to each other without an issue.

We have opened the system preferences on the 27" imac and selected "scanner sharing" and then we can see the scanner that is hooked to that computer and selected it. Then we closed the lock icon to keep it that way. The preferences should be all set.

HOWEVER, i still can not import from the scanner and can not see the scanner from my computer.

ALSO, when we open IMAGE CAPTURE on the computer that is directly connected to that scanner, I can see the scanner under devices, but it does not show under shared devices.

It used to be that you can set the sharing in the image caputer program - apparently now you can not.. but in trying to make it easier, it seems something got lost.

I just read through three pages of google results when searching this forum and nothing.. just a load of threads saying that Snow Leopard CAN, in fact, share a scanner..

OS X :: Won't Share Internet Working In Snow Leopard

Sep 3, 2009

After stumbling across a few threads talking about not being able to share an ethernet connection over wifi in Snow Leopard and I'm trying to figure out if this is isolated or just a glitch in Snow Leopard. Does anyone have this working?

For example my laptop hooks to ethernet, and I usually share my internet connection from my laptop to my iPhone via wifi (long story but its the only solution I have since iPhone has no ethernet port).

I need to make sure this is possible in snow leopard before my snow leopard equipped laptop comes.

OS X :: Upgraded To Snow Leopard - Cannot Share Canon Printer Via Bonjour

Dec 25, 2009

I'v been running Leopard on my wife's MacBook Pro since we got it in May. We have a Canon MF4150 attached to it via USB and have been sharing it out from the Mac. I have been using Bonjour and have been printing just fine from both my XP machine and my daughter's Vista machine. I just upgraded to Snow Leopard. I upgraded the drivers to the Snow Leopard compatible drivers from Canon and everything prints fine from the Mac. However, whenever we try to print from one of the Windows machine I get this popup on the Mac: "Canon UFR II Printer Driver key value specified for ticket does not exist.: 15512" And the printer is now "paused" whatever that means. When I try to unpause it, I get that some popup error. I end up having to delete the printer and re-add it to get printing (from the Mac) working again. I've deleted and re-added the printer many times. I even went to far as to remove the drive on the Mac manually (according to Canon's directions) and reinstall. I've deleted/recreated the printers on Windows using the Bonjour wizard.

Is there any way around this without ordering another copy of snow leopard? ?25 might not seem a lot but on a student budget i would rather not shell out.

Windows On Mac :: Does Windows 7 Require Snow Leopard To Be Booted 64bit?

Nov 20, 2009

I'm new to using Windows on a Mac but need to do it now for some video rendering applications that have transcoding, filtering, effects (like VirtualDub) that are only available on a PC.

I have a 17"MBP (3 months old), 2.8Ghz Duo, 4Gb RAM. I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, was excited about 64-bit though I'm not an expert, I just heard it would be faster.

I didn't realize SL doesn't boot 64-bit anyhow, that you need to hold "6" & "4" at startup to get it to boot in 64bit mode. This surprised me because I figure many people assumed SL was 64bit! Just getting it to boot properly was a hassle. The 6 & 4 trick didn't work for me.

I had to edit the preference file which wouldn't save at first either because of permissions (I had to drag it to my desktop, edit it, save it, then drag it back to the folder and enter in my administrator password).

Only then did I realize my brand new eSATA Express Card didn't work in 64-bit mode. Upsetting because I just bought the hot new Sonnet Tempo card for $200 that claims to work with Snow Leopard. So until it works I'll be running 32bit mode on my Mac.

But if I want to run Windows 7, does this mean I can only run the 32bit version?

OS X :: Windows 7 Vs Snow Leopard?

Jan 22, 2009

As the previous segment detailed, Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard aren't competing directly; instead, each is part of competitive strategy to either grow the Mac user base at Microsoft's expense, as Apple has been doing, or in Microsoft's case, to stop the hemorrhaging market share losses and reclaim leadership of desktop operating system development. How big is Windows 7? Microsoft's goal with Windows 7 is to lift Vista's derailed train and put it back on the tracks. Windows 7 itself is internally called Windows 6.1, essentially Vista Service Pack 2 (Microsoft is also preparing a scaled down Vista SP2 for delivery shortly before Windows 7 is released). Microsoft's executives have made no secret of the fact that Windows 7 is an incremental improvement to Windows Vista, with CEO Steve Ballmer calling it "Windows Vista, a lot better," and saying, "Windows 7 is Windows Vista with cleanup in user interface [and] improvements in performance." Mike Nash, Microsoft's vice president of Windows product management, called Windows 7 "evolutionary" but also a "significant" improvement upon Vista. The company has oscillated between describing it as either a major or minor release, depending on who the intended audience was. In October, Computerworld wrote that at the release of Vista, the company's roadmap suggested a series of alternating releases between major new operating system developments (like Vista) every four years, and minor updates in between.
