View 3 RepliesI have a mac pro that I bought in the summer of 2007. It's got 2 quad core 3.0ghz xeons (8-core). Will I notice a significant improvement in performance with snow leopard because of 'grand central' or is it one of those things that is more theoretical and you need all your programs to utilize the technology?
View 5 Replies View RelatedPut snow leopard on my 15" MacBook Pro 2.2ghz core 2 duo, 2ghz ram, 128mb video ram computer (purchased in late 2007 right after Leopard came out). The computer was running great on Leopard, no hitches whatsoever. Put snow leopard on it, expecting to experience performance boosts, cool new features (LOL), and just all in all a more stable computer. Got none of these.
Everything on the computer runs slower than before. Noticeably. Battery life is significantly less than before as well.
Anyone else experience these same issues on their Macbook?
How can I make sure my MacBook is ready for Snow Leopard?
I would just like to be prepared.
I have a white MacBook running OS X 10.5.6
Processor: 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Current Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I plan on upgrading to 4GB of memory soon.
I want to install Windows 7 on a friends' computer, which at present, has no working OS on it. The tricky part is her optical drive is totally kaput. I've been able to find some instructions on how to make live USBs in leopard (like these), but so far, none of them have been bootable by a PC.
When I try to use the disk utility's "restore" function, I get an error message saying "Could not validate source - error 254"
I've googled around for other possible solutions, but haven't turned up anything. Has anybody here been able to figure this out?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had some bad experiences in the past with my first MacBook Air (version 2.1) in which external drives kept getting erased without any good reason. I think it's due to the fact that I had to connect a USB cord to another computer when I had an external drive plugged into the MBA because the MBA could not power it on its own. Â
I thought it was due to a bad external drive and I took it to Samsung service center and complained that their drive was malfunctioning. I got a refund. But later on, I found that the same thing happened to another external drive and to a USB flash drive, so I realized that it had nothing to do with the external disks and something to do with the computer. I used the same drives that got erased on a newer MacBook Air (version 3.2) and I never had the sudden erasure problem. Â
Anyhow that's the background to why I want to make a clone of the external disks in my possession. If for some reason, the external disk gets suddenly erased, I would like a copy somewhere in safekeeping so that I do not lose all my movies. Â
How do I make a clone of an external disk? Â
I will be using a MacBook Air (3.2) for this task. It has two USB ports. Can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to do this? Just choose a source disk (external disk I want to clone) and a destination disk (the external disk where I want it to be cloned to)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen my girlfriend and I are in different time zones, which is unfortunately quite often, we communicate in part by sending small "movie postcards" to each other. We've been doing this with iMovie and the built-in iSight cameras in our macbooks, up- and downloading the .mov files using Dropbox. Â
This has worked OK, but the files are quite big, about 100 MB per minute. With slow bandwidths this can be a pain, and the image quality isn't that great, so I'm thinking there must be a better way to do this. Can't the video files be made smaller?

I want to backup my system on a local internal drive and a network drive, is this possible with time machine? I want it local but also available on the nextwork incase something happens to my computer (thieft, natural disaster, user stupidity) so I can always have my files.Â
Is it possible to have time machine select two disks instead of only having one? If not is there another program that can do this? I don't want to manually copy the file to the server as I would just forget. Automation is the only way it will ever happen.Â

I am looking for a nice tidy option to create an image of a "master" client and distribute to a group of student Macbooks. All the Macbooks are the same model and are all running Snow Leopard (though they were released with Leopard). Initially, one of the teachers created a user account (called student) with all the software and settings that we needed, on one of them and used Migration Assistant to copy that account to the others.Â
I prefer to have a master image I can restore to at any time. I figure that Disk Utility will do the job - I'm just not 100% sure of which steps to take. So far I have created my "master" macbook that is set up just the way I want it. Next I was going to attach it to the mac I use to run everything on (ARD etc) via firewire and boot the master in Target mode. Then I would run Disk Utility on my mac and use the New Image button to create an image called "studentPOD.dmg" (There is room on my mac for this, or I can put it on an external USB disk) Is this correct, and once I have the image, how do I get it onto the other Macbooks? Is there anything special I have to do to make it bootable? They all part of a student POD and can be re-imaged at anytime without worrying about losing data...so I can afford to experiment...Â
