OS X :: Desktop Shows Distorted Colors In Some Spots?
Oct 5, 2008
Every now and then my desktop will show some weird colors in relation to the background image, but it's very odd looking. I don't really know how to describe it, so I've attached a screen shot for reference.
The problem goes away if I just move the mouse over the area or if I open and close a program window on top of the area.

Starting two days ago, after about 20 minutes of use on my mac, some of the icons on my desktop will suddenly have distorted pixels, as well as all of the open windows will have a black box surrounding it. I am almost positive that this has nothing to do with my video hardware going bad, rather something corrupted in the operating system. This has happened sometime after I had installed the Adobe CS5 photoshop trial. I have recently uninstalled it, but this problem still persists. As soon as I log out, or restart the computer, everything is back to normal. When the 15-20 minute mark comes, all of a sudden everything starts getting distorted. I am also running Mac OS X 10.6.3 currently.
In the image you can see that the bottom dock is corrupted looking as well but the icons stay in tact. This is very odd.

When I move a window around the desktop, the image inside it distorts really badly. I have tried a new graphics card, but still does the same. I have booted up from a different system but still the same. It is a Mac pro 4.1 with a GT120 video card. Took the card to work today and tried it in my mac at work and it worked fine. Brought my video card and hard drive from work and put it into my mac at home and the same thing happened. Any body got any clue to what it is. Really don't feel like forking out for a new Logic board. Also, when I scroll down with the mouse, the text stretches in the window.

My MacBook Pro 13", running on latest update, is showing a completely blue, plain blue, desktop background. It changed all by itself. When I tried to reset it by right clicking on the image I want on my desktop and selecting "Set Desktop Picture" nothing changes. When I go into my settings and try to change it that way, the image I want as my background shows as already being my background, yet my desktop is still blue. Tried rebooting already.

I'm very satisfied with snow leopard, but with one qualm: I noticed that apple changed SOMETHING with the way expose works with gestures. Back in leopard, when I swiped four fingers down, it would expos, and four fingers up = show desktop. However this doesn't appear to be the case in snow leopard. When I swipe four fingers down, it often shows my desktop instead of going into expos. I have to swipe my fingers up and down a few times to get it to go into expos correctly. It's really odd and I don't understand why it's doing this. Could it be related to the fact that I have my upper right corner set to show desktop?

This has happened to me twice in a week on two separate machines, with two separate discs. When inserted into the Mac, the "blank disc" window comes up, even though the disc is full of files. The "get info" window shows 8k of space taken up on the disc.
How can this be, and what can I do to fix it?
Both machines are running Leopard.

I'm not sure if this make sense, but I'll do my best. (I'm a Mac newbie as of four days ago, and generally loving it)
I've somehow set up my display to have an appearance of a folding effect emanating from the bottom of the screen. This effect also shows through any open windows, which is annoying and distracting. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and how to turn it off, I'd appreciate it. I tried taking a screen grab, but the effect doesn't show up on it.

I am new to this seeing as my last macbook ran flawlessly for 6 years. Anyways, I just purchased a new macbook pro, and I love it except for the fact that I will get this weird white pixel that shows up on my desktop. The pixel is screenshotable and seems like it is sitting on a layer above my mouse. This pixel goes away when I restart my computer, but I think it comes back when I use microsoft word. This pixel moves off the screen when I use expose, and it is only present in desktop one. If i were to open a new desktop or view an app in full screen mode, the pixel is not there. I have tried reinstalling microsoft office but to no avail.

my mac seems to be slower as the days go by. on the start up screen when i first got it i can type in my password and when it goes to my desktop the macintosh hd icon is already there and the tool bar at the top with the battery and time is already there too. but now when i log in it seems to take time to load the macintosh icon and the tool bar. i also bought AirPort Express the little accessory that plugs into the wall and lets you get wi fi off of and wireless air tunes and printing.

I have just purchased a MacBook pro. When I put a blank DVD into my MacBook, a blank disk was shown on the desktop. On the MacBook Pro I get a File DVD.fpbf which when I try to burn a disc shows error code 0x80020063. How can I go back to the blank disc display?

I've got an imac with a dead monitor and when i plug in an external monitor to get a display it only shows me the far corner of the desktop and I cannot access the dock or anything else to change settings. I need to change the monitor setting to MIRROR MODE which I believe is located in System Preferences but I cannot see anything with the current limited display.

My iMac has these dark spots on the screen and I wanted to confirm that it is a hardware issue before I make an appointment with an Apple genius. I thought it was dirt, but cleaning it didn't do anything.

I've had bright spots appear behind my LCD screen for the second time this last month.
They look like the LEDS from the backlight are pushed up too close to the LCD and sort of washout the LCD in that area. The have occurred on the left side and the right sides along the lower edges of the screen.
I'm fed up with all the repairs this laptop has needed and feeling that I paid 2000 dollars for a quality product I went to the apple store today and asked for a replacement unit.
I was told that the recurring bright spots (on top of 3 other minor repairs and 1 major repair) did not warrant a replacement unit. The manager even said that they shouldn't have fixed this problem last time because it is cosmetic and not covered by the warranty. The genius also repeated the phase "This doesn't happen by itself" (I nice way to say I did this and that they shouldn't cover it. )
The manager decided to make me feel special and say something along the lines "We'll fix it again this time because we did last time".
My warranty is running out in 6 months and I need to know what's causing this. I always transport my laptop in an incase sleeve with a shoulder strap. There have never been any external marks on my casing when these dots appear. If I put too much pressure on the screen wouldn't the middle bend in more and I would get problems there? There weren't even marks on the screen from the keyboard keys yet I put enough pressure on it to cause this without even knowing it?
The best part is I asked the man who gave me my repaired laptop back how to prevent what the manager called 'LCD bruising'. When I mentioned bright spots he said 'Oh that's a defect we cover under warranty'.
Im going to contact apple's customer relations on monday regarding the repeated repair trips. I have no confidence this laptop can go a long period of time without needing repairs.

So I got my aluminum MacBook the month they came out in 2008, and it's been great.
The issue now is that there are particles between my LED display and the glass covering the screen and bezel.
For a while it was just one small particle which I ignored, but recently a larger piece of something got between the glass and the LED scree, smack in the center of my display. I suspect the rubber seal is no longer functioning correctly.
So, anybody else have this issue, and do you have any suggestions before I take it in to the Apple Store?

I love my MBP but the white burnout spots are now back. I had apple replace the logic board and parts last year after giving them hell customer service wise and went through the processes to get it done via the executive customer service lines. Props to them and it was working perfectly when I got it back.
Now noticing the white spots are back and more noticeable on the MBP. Want a new one but $2500 is spendy right now. Any tech experts or macbook pro repair experts know what causes this or if it's a workable repair?

I bought a MBP last weekend, and noticed in the last few days a few bright "spots" on the screen in the top left hand area of the screen. It's like the complete opposite of a dead pixel - it's just bright and whitish. It's almost like a speck of glitter on the screen! It's only visable from certain angles, but is one of those annoying little things!

My screen was suddenly filled with white random dots every where and they move when something on the screen moves.
These 2 screens are captured from my duo monitor setup. When I set my 2 screens to mirror each other the dots automatically mirror themselves too.
I don't see any dots when I boot up at the APPLE logo.
WHAT HAPPENED? Is my display card busted? Are there any solutions to this because it is very annoying. It shouldn't be a monitor problems coz I hardly doubt 2 monitors can get busted at the same time unless I'm that unlucky.

This is a minor complaint admittedly, but on a certain spot at the top of the bezel around my screen (just below and left of the camera) I have a black 'spot'. Every couple of days I wipe it away and it returns somehow! The only thing I can think is that maybe something is leaking from the trackpad (ie. from the inside of the machine but via the gap around the trackpad).
The machine is otherwise perfect, so I don't imagine there's anything seriously wrong inside...

The first week I had my Macbook Pro I noticed about 5 or 6 little grey splotches on the right hand edge of the screen. About a month later tons of them had formed on the top edge in a cluster. I didn't take my computer in because it wasn't that noticable, only at an angle. Well it's been 9 months, and there's now spots on the left hand side, and it's spreading. A week ago they started to appear on the bottom on the screen, and all the spots on all the other edges are forming rings around them.
I took it to my tech at our school since they sold us the laptops, and he said the spots were too small for water damage, and that he's never seen anything like it before. So I took it into the apple store THINKING they would replace it, instead they told me it had to be water damage and that was that. I've never spilled anything on this computer, and the spots started the week I got it. No matter how many times i explained the situation to those people, they just kept repeating "I'm not saying that you're lying, but we dont know what was actually done to the computer, we say it's water damage, which isn't covered" and refused to fix it.
Its just a bunch of little grey dots clustered together, some are a little spread out but as the weeks go by it just gets worse.
I'm not really sure what else to do at this point, the apple store obviously wasnt a big help. And I still have no idea what it is, i just know that this computer is extremely important to my schooling, it doesn't get banged around, i dont even eat around it. Has anyone seen anything like this?

I just bought a Black, 2007 MacBook for $500 from eBay. In my excitement, I had forgotten to ask the seller of the cosmetic condition, who had negelected to mention it, and now that I have it, I notice some dark spots behind the screen.
I say behind because they appear behind the pixels; if you roll rext over it it is clear that they are not dead pixels, and the spots are under them.
The spots look sort of like somebody painted the back of the screen in Photoshop's dissolve mode - little light grey spots around a darker grey center with dusty dots surrounding it.
If you look at it at the right angle, you can also see white spots (The grey spots will also turn white at this angle)
My question is, can it be fixed, and about how much will it cost?

I would like to know if there is a way to display all of the hot spots or Links on a Safari web page in OSX. In other words is there a possible key combination that will highlight all of the active spots on a page at one time.

Lately my Macbook's sound has become distorted while playing videos or watching flash videos/streams. This doesn't happen all the time, it seems to happen most when my computer is overloaded (which happens a lot due to the Safari Flash plug in). The distorted sound is not just in the video, but the entire computer is effected (any sound including iTunes music/volume control sounds/etc). I found a way to fix it, which is to plug in a pair of headphones into the audio out port (which then plays sound normally through the headphones) and then when i unplug it the sound is all fixed when playing from the speakers.
I want to prevent this from happening again though because it's annoying enough when Flash video starts chugging in Safari. Whenever it f*cks up the sound I get even more pissed that I have to go grab a pair of headphones to fix the problem. This happened like 5 times today. I have SL, if that matters since I never had this issue when Leopard was installed.

I noticed that when I browse in Safari, I get a distorted menu bar after a while. It generally pulls in content from the page that I'm browsing. When I use Chrome or Firefox, I don't have this problem at all. I'm running a 1.6 Ghz MBA Rev. A. I have had issues with graphics lines in the past too.

Sometime this morning the screen on my mac became very distorted (almost pixelated.) I restarted while holding the shift key and it was resolved for about five minutes, then started up again. A friend suggested it could be a blown video card? I've attached a photo.
