I accidentally set up a computer to computer network and I cannot figure out how to make it go away. I also tried to password protect it, to at least lock it down, but the password is removed from the network as soon as someone logs on (and doesn't require a password to do so). Something is fishy, to say to least. I was told to go into my preferences (through Library) but I don't know what to make of the omnioutliner files. How do I get rid of this network?

I have an iPhone and when I'm in my house I like to use wifi from my Mac. I'm running leopard 10.5 osx. I go to AirPort, create a network and I see it on the mac and iPhone. After I turn the computer off and back on it's gone. Is there a way to create a network that will not disappear?

I have a unibody MacBook late-2009, latest update of SL 10.6.4.
I am attempting to use a computer-to-computer network from my MacBook to my iPod Touch 3G to use an application called TouchOSC which controls Ableton Live on my Mac.
I can Create Network just fine. It sets up the network inbetween my Mac and iPod perfectly. But once I disconnect from the created computer-to-computer network, that network disappears like it was never created. To use computer-to-computer again I have to re-create the network all over.
All of my other networks are stored just fine and I have no other problems with my house Wi-Fi or any others. I have reset my Network Preferences by deleting the SystemConfigurations files and still nothing doing about the computer-to-computer problem.
I am not sure if this is desired behavior, and if it is, is there any way I can save the network I created for later use? Setting it up every time is painful, I want to use it nearly everyday for music.

I have a MacBookPro that I use in my room connected through ethernet. I am at university and they have only allow one machine to connect to their wi-fi that is available across campus, through mac address filtering. I also have an iPhone which I would love to use wi-fi on, at least while I am in my room lounging around and such. Anyway, the point being, can I use my MBP (connected through LAN) to act as a router so that my iPhone can connect to it? Essentially create a wireless network, so iPhone would find it and I could go online on it via wi-fi?
I tried going on Airport and clicking on "Create a network" (w/o a password), but I get an error saying "There was an error creating our Computer-to-Computer network." It doesn't say much else -- is there a better way of doing this?

For about a little over a year I have noticed something strange. When the computer turns on and the login screen appears the name of my computer "John's iMac G5" is under the big Mac OS X heading. Normal, but what isn't normal is that the computer adding numbers to the end of it's name so the appears like so "John's iMac G5 (2)" and currently that number is up to 5. So I assume it will change the name to have a 6 relatively soon. I was just wondering what is causing this? If I try to delete the numbers from the name, it just starts back up again within a few days. I am running Leopard version 10.5.8...this never happened when the computer had Tiger installed on it.

Every so often I boot or reboot my computer and the "Computer Name" changes by adding a number 2 to the name, for example my computer at home is called "Dilbert" and when I boot I notice the has changed to "Dilbert (2). When I try to change it back I get a dialog box that tells me "The name of the computer "Dilbert" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "Dilbert (2)". To change the name of your computer, open the System Preferences and click Sharing, then type the name in the Computer Name field." BTW, this is the field I am in and attempting to change the name in.

My computer name keeps changing. I thought it was my printer network that was causing it but now I see that the "new" name is ACTIVE in Network-->WINS of System Preferences. It shows the computer's WINS-->NetBIOS Name as Name-2. And it says it is active.Â
To turn it off so I can disable it? What it is and how can I keep it from changing again? Why this happens (see above).Â
I do have MS Office on the computer and I have locked down changes to my Printer Network, to NAME instead of NAME-2. (The printer is connected USB but has network capability.)Â
I only have my computer on the MAC Router, no other computers are networked to it. (I do have an iPad, iPod & iPhone.)Â
I keep putting the name back and it keeps changing itself back to NAME-2.

Recently, I had decided to change my MacBook Pro name. After reading the warning, I understood that everything would turn into defualt settings and I would not loose any other information. However, in result, after completing a restart; my computer made duplicates of music and pictures. To add on to this, the name change deleted my playlist, which I have no problems with, and made about 3 duplicates of every song in my library which consisted of about 28 gigs of music. Btw...all of the files are there, it is just that there are tons of duplicate files which need to be deleted because of this computer name change.

My computer's hard drive space keeps changing. For exaomple, there are 50 GB free space, and then a few hrs later I will check the info again and it will read 47 GB free, 45 GB free, etc. It keeps changing throughout the day. I have not downloaded anything, not added any files, just browsed the web. Why does it keep chaning like that? Usually when I restart the computer, it reads what it normally should, eg. 50 GB free.

I was amazed that in the left-hand panel of FINDER, under the SHARED tab, there are about 6 other computers that I am seeing.
I am concerned that others may be able to access my computer via my wireless connection.
How can I make sure I am protected, and my computer is invisible to them?

I've had this problem going on two months now, so I would not recall what program could be causing it. A cloned share, "eve-2" (the name of my iMac is "Eve") shows up across the network as a PC share. OS is Snow Leopard, fully updated. Model iMac8,1. Screens of finder and running processes attached if it helps.

I just secured the wireless router and network for my roommate the other day. When I got back in town today and tried connecting to the internet, it told me that another device on the network is using your computer's IP address. I have no idea what this means and what I have to do to fix it... any thoughts?

I was wondering if it's possible to send video to another computer using a network, and use it as an external screen. Now the biggest problem: The slave computer has to be a windows computer.
We have LCD screens with built-in computer, and it's windows. It's used for a lighting show.

Just wondering if there is anyway to block internet access temporarily.(not on my computer, but I was wondering if I could to some wacky-code stuff and such to prevent access on another computer that is in my network) The reason why I am asking this is because I think there isn't enough bandwidth to go around my house (there are 2 xbox 360s hooked up to live, and 3 computers hooked up). But just wondering if this is possible to do because ever since my step sister came here for the summer, I have been getting dced non-stop.

Is there a way to temporarily disable wireless network access for a specific computer, rather than changing the network password or creating a new network altogether? I'd like to be able to grant the computer access to the network when I want (and control this from the admin computer, without having to change anything on the computer for limited access).

My home network consists of three computers connected via a Linksys wired router. Is there any way to limit (or disable) the connection speed to a particular computer? I'd like to be able to selectively limit/disable the connection, without having to remove the ethernet connection on said computer. I can access the router status and enable/disable the connection for the entire network, but I can't seem to selectively limit/disable a particular connection.

After I upgraded to 10.7.4 I receive popup windows informing that: This computer's local hostname "ComputerName" is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to "ComputerName-1.local" every time my Mac wakes up. The number at the end of computer name increases every time I wake my Mac Pro up.
- Disk permissions repair brings no errors.
- After Mac restart - the same result
- As before I use both LAN and WiFi connections with LAN in higher priority.

I have an older Mac Mini (Mid 2007, Core 2 Duo) running Lion. I am trying to create a computer-to-computer network, but I keep getting the message "Connection Failed".Futhermore, in the window "Create computer-to-computer network" the pull-down for "Channel" is blank. I have successfully done this on other Macs. Is there some hardware limitation on this old of a Mac mini that won't allow this to be done I can't find anything stating this anywhere.

I know how to fix this problem, I was just wondering if anyone knows WHY it happens.
I have a network drive that I use on my iMac and every time it's nearly full, my WHOLE machine becomes unusably slow. I mean, even opening a finder window can take up to a minute. Just deleting a couple of files off the network drive will fix the problem. Unfortunately, it can take up to an hour just to delete a file because everything is so slow, including the actually deleting of the file.
I don't have an system files on the drive, just a bunch of video files and personal documents.
I was just curious why the network drive being slow would impact the whole system? It just seems weird to me.
