I was amazed that in the left-hand panel of FINDER, under the SHARED tab, there are about 6 other computers that I am seeing.
I am concerned that others may be able to access my computer via my wireless connection.
How can I make sure I am protected, and my computer is invisible to them?
i was searching for a programm that allowes you to hide a folder so that it is still clickable... all i found where lots of programms that made the folder invisible but after they where invisible i couldnt click on them anymore.
is it possible to make a folder invisible and place it at some spot on the screen i remember and when i click on that spot on the screen where the invisible folder is that the folder would open?
You know how to can go to - insert - hit counter. Can you make this invisible for other people to see? if so, how?

I work in a cross platform environment (windows/mac) where we typically save common files to a shared network drive. I've found when I save a file directly from excel (as opposed to saving it locally, then copying it over) it created an invisible ._filename file in the same directory. I know it's a property/resource file for the file that I just created, but it's a little confusing for some windows users and just clutters up the share directory. Is there any way to prevent the creation of the ._filename file while still saving directly from excel?
(I'd prefer not to save locally, then move to network drive - it's cleaner for me if I can just save directly) So far, I've found that this only happens with MS Office. I've opened a sql file in textwrangler and komodo, edited it, and saved it to the network and no invisible files are created.
NOTE: this is different the the fix that apple had published regarding not creating DS_Store files - that refers to copying files from the finder to a network drive and I don't have any problems with that.
My computer name always keep changing with a message like "computer name X already exist in your network and your computer name is now X(2)". I have to change the computer name back to X, or the computer will be rename to X(3), X(4) .... etc. I did not change anything in my network.Is there any way to stop this?
I accidentally set up a computer to computer network and I cannot figure out how to make it go away. I also tried to password protect it, to at least lock it down, but the password is removed from the network as soon as someone logs on (and doesn't require a password to do so). Something is fishy, to say to least. I was told to go into my preferences (through Library) but I don't know what to make of the omnioutliner files. How do I get rid of this network?

I am attempting to use a computer-to-computer network from my MacBook to my iPod Touch 3G to use an application called TouchOSC which controls Ableton Live on my Mac.
I can Create Network just fine. It sets up the network inbetween my Mac and iPod perfectly. But once I disconnect from the created computer-to-computer network, that network disappears like it was never created. To use computer-to-computer again I have to re-create the network all over.
All of my other networks are stored just fine and I have no other problems with my house Wi-Fi or any others. I have reset my Network Preferences by deleting the SystemConfigurations files and still nothing doing about the computer-to-computer problem.
I am not sure if this is desired behavior, and if it is, is there any way I can save the network I created for later use? Setting it up every time is painful, I want to use it nearly everyday for music.
I have a MacBookPro that I use in my room connected through ethernet. I am at university and they have only allow one machine to connect to their wi-fi that is available across campus, through mac address filtering. I also have an iPhone which I would love to use wi-fi on, at least while I am in my room lounging around and such. Anyway, the point being, can I use my MBP (connected through LAN) to act as a router so that my iPhone can connect to it? Essentially create a wireless network, so iPhone would find it and I could go online on it via wi-fi?
I tried going on Airport and clicking on "Create a network" (w/o a password), but I get an error saying "There was an error creating our Computer-to-Computer network." It doesn't say much else -- is there a better way of doing this?
Every time my imac goes to sleep and then i try to go back on safari it says "none of your preferred networks are working choose one from the list" or something like that.

My new laptop is an aluminum MacBook though I doubt that makes any difference as I know it's an OSX issue.
I've listed it as a preferred network in the AirPort preferences pane, but it doesn't seem to help.

My preference is set to automatically join, but it does not seem to be working. It is wep pw protected by have provided the password. That is not the problem. View 1 Replies View Relatedalright... i got my MB in october 2007, and it ran great for about a year and half, but just recently, its been dogging and lagging so much, its bugging the crap out of me to the point where i borrowed my friends external HD and put all my important stuff on there, and erased and reinstalled mac OSX on there, and it still behaves the same way. my specs are in my signature so let me explain...
ill be running just itunes, ichat, and safari watching youtube videos or something, and the youtube vids just start skipping, and then the sound gets all distorted like it sounds like its underwater gargling. then i shut the macbook, reopen it, and its fine for about 2 or so minutes and then it does it again. or ill be listening to music via itunes, and reading some forums or the news or something, and when i scroll down, the music skips. its really annoying. i rarely get beach balling, but safari, or firefox, or itunes takes an eternity to load. and my fan allways seems like its on, and running hot as hell.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm sure everyone heard of Onlive which launched yesterday, one of of the downsides currently is they wont allow you to play over Wi-Fi due to latency issues. Mostly they don't want the user to experience latency issues and blame it on the service rather than the connection. (They say Wi-Fi will work eventually once they optimize it more, and currently their closed beta testers are able to use it over wireless, and even on the iPad, and iPhone). Anyway, Windows has a nifty feature where you can bridge your connections, and by doing that, Onlive will work over Wi-Fi, I tried it out and it actually worked great, very minimal latency issues, but I usually am on my OSX partition, and want to play it on here. Does anyone know of a way to fake out Onlive? Or do a bridge connections type thing within OS X?
