OS X :: Clone Copying System Vs Install?

thinking back from pre OSX days with regards to OSX. Is there any difference whether or not the boot system (including applications, etc.) for your computer was put in place by their installers or made from a (backed up) clone or copy of that system? I suppose it doesn't since people clone their drives all the time. I sort of remember from pre osx days of an installed system being ~blessed~, if I remember the vernacular correctly. But even still, don't know if it meant anything back then either

I have a Macbook running on snow leopard and I wanna upgrade my internal hard drive as it is currently too small. I downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner and cloned my entire hard drive to an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Now, I have that new internal hard drive from wester digital. What do I do with it? replace the current internal hard drive with the new harddrive and then how do I get the data from the external hard drive with my cloned data to the fresh western digital? Do I boot first from external hard drive etc? I am not sure what to do now?when I was given the option which hard drive to clone (or which part of the hard drive to clone) there was also the option to clone "Install Disk". I don't need to clone that, right?

I am copying data from a clone backup to another drive. After the copy I looked at the permissions and they are not the same as the source. When checking the source I do not see permissions for my logged in account. When I look at the destination I see Root has read-write permissions. BTW, I also logged in as root do to the copy because I was getting copy errors.

i'm about to install new computer setup at work with multiple of the same PC desktop's and laptop's. This would be a piece of cake with MAC, using target disc mode and clone each stations with same setup. BUT how to do this in the Windows environment? I really don't want to install each individually = huge waste of time.

I have a G4 400 Mac desktop running plotter software that I need to put on a new drive in the same machine. The current drive is making clicking sounds at start up that probably indicate poor drive health. How do I clone the current drive to a new drive in a way that will allow me to just switch start up to the new healthy drive and keep running the plotter software as usual?

I just have way too many stuff installed on my main hdd. I just cant imagine that hdd failing and the time I have to spend to install everything back..

I have an old G4 system with Pro Tools recording software and related Plug-Ins installed and running flawlessly. Bad news is that the drive is about 9 yrs old and I want to make a backup before selling it to someone so they can have a bootable backup drive instead of having to re-install the whole system if the internal drive craps out.
The OS is 9.2.2. It is not classic and has no version of OS X on it t all.
How do I make a bootable clone of the whole system discs, apps an all, to an external firewire drive?

G3 iBook running Tiger (no disks). G4 iBook running Panther. If the G3 was cloned, e.g. with SuperDuper, could restoring the clone to the G4 be enough to install Tiger on it? Or does an install have to be via disk, not cloned backup?

I'm drop shipping my 27" imac refurb to OWC for them to install the sdd, ram, etc. Someone here said OWC will clone the hd to the ssd and then the end user went back and did a clean install. Wouldn't it be better if OWC just installed the SSD, left it clean, and I did the install from the disks myself? I mean I assume it's a time issue why they would clone, not fresh install. I have plenty of time to do it. Is it not that simple? Is there something more fangled to it, or is it just running the disks and doing what they say?

This is a tutorial for people looking to clone their internal hard drive and install it into their macbook (usually because you've upgraded to a larger hdd). I have also included an installation of windows vis a vis boot camp style. Ive been battling this for the past 3 days, so hopefully this tutorial will answer some questions and save you some time.
1. Firstly get your external drive (clone) ready. Go to applications---->utilities---->disk utility. Click on your external drive and then partition it. I used 2 partitions, one for mac (200 GB) and one for windows (40 GB). For now partition in GUID partition format (found in options). This is important. You can check whether it actually as in GUID at the end of the format when you click on the drive and on the bottom part of the screen it will give you all the drive information. (NOTE: if you have a standard windows installation you can have 1 partition at this stage and then later let boot camp create a partition for you. Boot camp will only format in FAT, so all windows using NTFS are out of luck)..............

I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz from a couple of years ago. It has a 75 GB harddrive which I am upgrading to 500 GB. My plan has been to simply clone the drive using the enclosure I purchased. But after reading some posts here, I see I have a few options.
1. I could clone. This sounds the least risky since theoretically I should end up with everything exactly the same. I do wonder about how it clones the files the operating system is using at the time, but I guess I'll just trust it knows what its doing.
2. A fresh install sounds ideal. I have had my laptop for a couple of years, so I imagine a fresh install would do it some good. But what does that mean exactly? Is it basically starting from scratch? Would I have to reinstall everything, not just the OS but also all of my programs, individually? And then transfer all of my data (music, photos, etc) given that I can find it all? That sounds a bit laborious and what if I missed something? Or am I misunderstanding the process?
3. A few months ago I purchased a Time Machine and I have been using it to back up my laptop and my external harddrive. Can I really restore my entire internal harddrive from Time Machine? I'm pretty sure I would have set my Time Machine to back up everything especially since it's a 1 TB drive. Any drawbacks to doing it this way?

I'm going to be swapping the 250 GB drive in my 2008 MBP Penryn (17) for a Seagate Momentus 500/7200rpm drive. There are two ways to go. One is to put the new drive in an enclosure and use SuperDuper or CCC to clone the main HD and then swap them. The other is to use Time Machine. That means installing the new drive blank, boot from the OS disk and format. Then go to the most recent TM state and restore. My available external HD is the FW800 Western Digital Studio. It has space for a partition big enough for the cloning. The case coming with the Seagate is the Other World Express USB2. I have good pdfs on the install procedure. Need to remember to print them, first.

While I'm copying files from a folder to another in the same hdd (this only happens with the iMac hdd) or when unzip a file my system slows down, if I'm watching a video, sometimes freezes the image and then continues.

I have a Macbook Pro Intel Core Duo (first generation of MacBook Pro released). I run OSX 10.6.5. My disk utility has detected a problem and says I need the install disks that came with the computer. Called apple and they said I could reboot from snow leopard or the upgrade.** Problem is that I don't have any disks with me except those that came with my brand new iMac. Can I use those to reinstall the system? Is there any other way?
**They also said that after 2007, the install disks that come with computers are keyed to that specific computer so I "might" not be able to use the disk to repair.
Additionally, and I don't know if this makes a difference but I have the airport/time capsule which backs up my computer for easy restore.

I have bought a used Macbook Intel 2.2Ghz 250Gb with 2GB RAM running Snow Leopard. It didn't come with system discs. I have a similar Macbook with a 160Gb HD running 10.5,8 and I have swapped the HDs over. Both machines are running fine. I now wish to reinstall 10.5 on the 160GB HD but when I use my original 10.5.6 system discs it says that OSX cannot be run on this machine.

I've never had these kind of problems with Leopard on my G5, neither on Tiger. Both having installed less than 4 GB of RAM. SL seems to have changed the RAM management quite a bit. I don't know if it's the video memory that is causing SL to slow down the whole system so much that it has to page out each and every newly opened Safari tab or PS document to HDD. Here is a screen shot of the RAM usage: In other words, the page-outs are taking place even despite the supposed FREE Inactive RAM...

I recently downloaded the Darwin Ports package from the website and ran it, the install reads that everything installed correctly, and the website informed me that once the process was complete, I should run sudo port -d selfupdate, however, all I'm getting is an error that reads "sudo: ports: command not found".

I just picked up this Macbook at the store http[URL]Talked with the salesman and didn't lile the fact that was it was only 2GB RAM He told me I have 2 options:
) have the store install for $150 (parts and labor)or b) look at a Youtube tutorial to install 2gB ram making the total RAM = 4GB I REALLY need the extra 2GB because of the programs I run (heavy) but don't feel like paying extra for a macbook pro or paying an extra

I just got a Mac G4 tower from a doctor I work with. He needed me to delete the whole hard drive before I took it. I booted off the OSX tiger DVD and wiped the drive with no problems, (I even booted it off the DVD the next day, to show my friend that the drive was wiped), but now that I have it home I am unable to boot from the OSX DVD. It shows the apple screen with the apple logo and the spinning... whatever you call it..... but then the screen just goes black after a minute or two. Have ejected the DVD, and retried, Zapped the PRAM by using control opt P+R and by unplugging the G4 and pushing the PMU button next to the battery.

This machine WILL NOT ALLOW an Install Boot from ANYTHING other than the Jaguar CD. Screen "blinks" when I attempt to use Sys Pref to designate the 10.4 DVD ... Holding down "C" key is a waste, PRAM & NVRAM have been attempted. Re-installing the 10.2 OS still has the SAME RESULT: Machine refuses ANY Sys Pref Startup OTHER than 10.2 ... PERIOD ... Just get a "blink" on the display, no Error Msg, just a blink .I've erased, zeroed & formatted the 80GB HD, matching RAM (4 X 256MB) ... so I'm pretty sure I need to get this "Firmware" thing resolved so the logic board stops being ILLOGICAL ... or ... is it IMPOSSIBLE to go from 10.2 direct to 10.4? Again, Machine info is;400 MHz PPC G4 Silver 1 MB RAM, with a CLEAN 80GB HD As far as OTHER Posts have indicated, I need to download & run the 4.1.7 firmware ... it is VERY DIFFICULT to find ANYWHERE that is governed by Cupertino ...
