my brother got a new macbook and im running a powerbook g4 still on tiger can i use his os install discs to upgrade to leopard? or will it wipe my computer clean and install it on a clean slate?

My disk utility has detected a problem and says I need the install disks that came with the computer. Called apple and they said I could reboot from snow leopard or the upgrade.** Problem is that I don't have any disks with me except those that came with my brand new iMac. Can I use those to reinstall the system? Is there any other way?
**They also said that after 2007, the install disks that come with computers are keyed to that specific computer so I "might" not be able to use the disk to repair.
Additionally, and I don't know if this makes a difference but I have the airport/time capsule which backs up my computer for easy restore.
My system is from October 2003 and ... would it be possible to order replacement system CD's from Apple? I specifically need the Mac OS 9 disk; I need Classic because of a few programs I wrote years ago.I had a flakey drive and when I zeroed-out and reformatted, I couldn't find all of the disks.

The previous owner doesn't however have any of the original installation disks but he does include a backup copy of Snow Leopard. Do I need the original installation disks or will the backup copy of snow Leopard suffice? *I don't know the difference between a backup version and original* And if I need them what are they and where do I get them?

However, just recently (august 08) my sister purchased another Macbook. Her Macbook came with the 10.5.4 install disks. I tried to put these into my macbook just to see if for some reason apple was nice enough to allow people who purchased new macbooks to update all other macbooks they owned. First, what's on what DVD? Is the OS on one DVD and all the bundled apps on the other or is there a mix of apps on both DVD's?One potential snag is that I recall reading somewhere that the MP install of OSX includes optimizations/support for Nehalem... would this screw up my MBA or would it ignore that stuff?
My MacBook internal hard disk is currently partitioned into Snow Leopard (JHFS+), Storage (NTFS), and Windows 7 (NTFS). Whenever I try to mount my storage partition, it shows up as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in Disk Utility, and refuses to mount. My Windows 7 partition, which is also NTFS, mounts automatically when I log in. Is there a way to perhaps force my storage partition to mount as an NTFS-formatted drive? This problem only exists when using OS X though, as it shows up fine on both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7.
I also have an external hard drive which is partitioned (using MBR) as Storage (FAT32), Backup (NTFS) and Mac Storage (JHFS+). It all mounts properly, with the exception of Mac Storage, which shows up, curiously enough, as an NTFS drive in Disk Utility. Same question as above: Is there a way to force it to mount as a JHFS+ drive? (I'm using Tuxera NTFS 2010.10, if that makes any difference).

When I insert the OS X CDs and try to boot from them, either by holding down the 'C' key or the option key and choosing the Mac OS X CD, the CD simply ejects, and then the computer proceeds to boot from the HD and into Ubuntu.

1) to stripe (Raid 0) the two internal disks, or
2) use one as the install/OS disk and the other as the data/scratch disk?

If still powers up and works!Anyway, I also found a disk box of some 24 * 3.5" 800k floppies of my old work, dissertation, and things, and would really like to get these onto a current machine as well as Mac Project and MacWrite, MacPaint etc. to read them.I've an old 12" G4 Powerbook which I rebuilt with 10.4.11 so it runs Classic, but I now need someway of getting the files off the 3.5" floppies. The Mac+ has no ethernet only the old Appletalk. I tried my local Mac Store who wanted to sell me a nice new USB floppy drive which was PC compatible. Now I know the old SuperDrives could read these old 800Kb disks but will a modern drive read them as well? The Mac Expert in store didn't have a clue, and to be frank it didn't look like he was even born when these were around.any other suggestions on transferring these files?

A lot of them are the really ancient 800K kind so I am using a Mac Classic II running System 7.0.1 to access them. The process is going well but occasionally I've run across a PC formatted floppy that the Mac won't read. It just says: This disk is not a Macintosh diskette. Do you want to Initialize it? So how do I give my Classic the ability to access these PC format diskettes?

The Apple Store employee I talked to said I should make an appointment at the Genius Bar and they'll do a wipe and reinstall for me, but I'm not interested in putting much more money into this since I'm giving it to a friend as a favor (hers just died). Any suggestions for how to get a copy of the right OS and all the iLife software, too? It has Tiger, but I could put Leopard on it, if that's easier to get a hold of.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an intel mac (macbook) with a fresh (not upgraded) copy of Leo. Apparently this does matter, as Tiger would have been able to mount the disk with no problem so I suspect that ability remains in the computer when upgraded (only a suspicion). I have been trying for 3 days to get my Canon solutions disk (14.3) to mount in Leopard. When I insert it, it just spits back out after spinning up.
Canon support had no idea what to do, and apple wasn't giving me any help since it is a third party app, they simply sent me the direction of canon for a fix.
Thankfully I figured out a solution. This should work for all who have disks that will not mount and spit back out. As a last resort right before I pulled my hair out I decided to try and force the disk to mount by holding the shift key while inserting the Canon Solutions disk. IT WORKED!
Do not let go of that shift key until the disk is mounted completely and the installer icon is on the desktop. Once it is mounted you are good to go and it installs with no problem.
I hope this information can help some of you having this issue.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have had problems with my macbook grey screening and having to shut down by holding down the power button (I get the screen with the instructions how to reboot in 5 different languages). When I start it up again I get the panic report from the shut down.In Utilities, Disk Utility I ran the Repair Disk and received the message that the disk was damaged and I had to do the reapir from the install disk.Â
So I put the install disk in (came with the laptop, 10.6) and I tried to repair the disk using the disk utility from the install disk. Two problems: when I insert the disk, restart while holding down the 'C' key, nothing happens (stays at the grey screen) until I let go of the 'C' key and then I get another Panic and have to reboot manually. So I tried inserting the install disk with the laptop already on and clicking on the disk to hopefully get to the disk utility or at least reinstall the OS, which leads to problem two: I receive the message 'Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer.'Â My laptop is currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 20" Intel based iMac (model A1224) running Snow Leopard. It is just over a year old and only had the original Apple keyboard and mouse plugged into it. Today when I tried to start it I got only a blank gray screen. I tried all the keyboard combo start-up suggestions in the Apple help screens, unplugging/replugging everything, and booting with the Original disk and the Snow Leopard disk. A couple of those attempts produced a minute of the gray apple logo screen, then back to blank. While the disks were in it did sound like it was trying to read them, but spit out the disks after about 5 minutes.

Easy things to upgrade, done it dozens of times before.Here's the catch; I don't have the original install disks in my possession and need to upgrade this by next week. Before I would just boot from the CD, but I only have the 10.6 CD that came with my computer, I don't have the 10.7 CD.

I have successfully installed Windows Vista Home Premium on my MBA through Boot Camp. I have tried to install the MBA drives from the OS X install disk repeatedly, but without success. The "setup.exe" seems to be working fine, but after restart, Windows does not seem to recognize the Mac drives. Updating the drives manually did not improve the situation. Does anyone know how to install the drives correctly?
