OS X :: Apache Server Won't Start: - Unable To Open Logs
Jun 11, 2010
I am running mac os x 10.5.8. I want to run the apache server, but i get the following error: (2)No such file or directory: httpd: could not open error log file /private/var/log/apache2/error_log. Unable to open logs. It is the first time I try using Web Sharing on my machine, but somehow it seems some files are missing. Is it possible to install the apache server anew?
With any Unix machine, one can run at the command line:- apachectl -S This will show all virtual servers configured in Apache, and will break if there are any obvious problems in the httpd .conf files. It's very handy for testing a new configuration before restarting the server. With Mac OS X Server though, this doesn't work properly. Sure, I can run that command and see a virtual server or two, but with the introduction of the server Apache wrappers, the command line tools read a very different configuration than the `serveradmin` tool does.
e.g. Wrappers like:-<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER> .... </IfDefine> or <IfDefine WEBSERVICE_ON>

ps. Running `sudo serveradmin stop web && sudo serveradmin start web` really compared to `apachectl graceful`; it's painfully slow and doesn't provide a way to test a custom configuration before attempting to restart.
I just had my new Macbook Pro 2.4, Mac OS X 10.5.2 and decided to make a totally fresh install. Installed MySQL and stared PHP etc. Working great. But now I can't get my Apache to work. I have been following all tutorials on the net and looking around. Web sharing and so on and on. MySQL is working fine but and http://localhost/ attempts resumes in. Safari can't open the page "http://localhost/" because it could not connect to the server "localhost". What the xxx am I doing wrong? Also the "/var/log/apache2" is empty.
how to set apache to listen to onlt certain ip's? I tried changing the httpd.conf file using the listen command, but it still listens to all ips. If I adjust the default website to listen to lets say 192.168.2.2:80 it does, but then seems like it breaks server admin, where changes do not save.Â
I have a Mac mini running Leopard server (10 user) and I am getting an error in the system log: "May 3 14:52:25 mini01 org.apache.httpd[941]: SSLCertificateFile: file '/etc/certificates/Default.crt' does not exist or is empty". I do not have web services running, nor is Apache 1.2 running. I was trying to update to Apache 2.2 but it constantly failed so I just shut web services down (using this system for training NOT critical). How do I stop what appears to be Apache 2.2 from launching/looking for a non-existant SSL certificate?
I have a 2007 MacBook Pro. I was wondering if it were possible to turn it into a server using Apache. Also, if I used Apache to turn my computer into a server, would it be compatible with SMF or vBulletin and able to host one of these software?
Here is a screenshot from System Diagnostic Reports:
Seems WindowServer keeps crashing, whenever this happens, Mac forces to log out and I have to log back in. Â
There is one of the crash report:Â

I had a MacBook Air late 2008 and it was destroyed by a mean person, now I have a late model MacBook 2009 and updated everything, but I cannot figure out how to load Apache Open Office. It keeps giving me a warning that the security system won't allow anything that is not made by Apple or has its approval or something, but it worked on the 2008 Mac and it worked awesomely! Why can I NOT find anything about it now that I have Yosemite , which is also hard to remember to spell!
updated to 10.7.4 and cannot turn on my Open Directory service in Server Admin. It's there, but says it is stopped, and it won'y start. After reboot it is still the same.
Any ideas as to why my iMac wants to log off constantly. I have it password protected to wake up (purely to keep my kids off) but no other power saver features activated.Whenever I walk away for any period of time, it has tried to log out and may have stalled due to the fact that I've left Safari open or the like, but otherwise logs off completely.
we have a mac server running and have a windows based (XP) machine logging on to the domain. is there a way to enable offline files on the mac server so that a copy is saved on the windows machine and when the user relogs on to the domain the files get syncd?
Trying to installed JAMF software on Mac Mini server. One of the configuration steps required setting up a database from the terminal but it requires the MYSQL service to be running and I'm unable to get this service to start.
I found where my logs from Adium are kept: but the files are .XML and I don't know what to use to open it. Also I want to be able to send these files to a friend. My friend is using a PC so what should I tell them to open it with?
We had a mac which was on Leopard and saved files to the serverÂ
The file system we use is a Windows 2008 File Server, this has worked fine with leopard for years
However I understand that Leopard splits the files into resource forks - and that Lion has dropped support for these files. That particular mac is now on Lion as we upgraded and encountering LOTS of issuesÂ
I unable to open or edit lots of the files as i believe chunks of the files are missing. E.g an .eps file showed as 740KB on leopard - Viewing from a windows PC it was 730kb for the .eps and 10kb for the ._ resource fork.Â
Now that we are on the LION upgrade, we only see the .eps file and it is only 730kb. Information missing is things such as preview (quark), Font data, type of file, version number. we have hundreds! of images, files etc created with leopard and now upgraded to lion they all have become useless!
Rejoining the resource forks and files together so that they are usable on lion
[URL] input Music into vent and whenever I press "start" I either Get an Error Saying "cannot start Jack server, Please Check preferences or retry after a system reboot" or "Fatal error has occurred shutting down." and I reinstalled it and Used the default preferences
My company has been happily using FTP for months now. Then, for some reason that I have not yet determined, FTP stopped. I launched Server Admin and found that the service had been stopped. When I tried to click the green button to start it, nothing happened.
I rebooted the machine, looked in logs, replaced config files...nothing. It simply won't start, and I don't know why
i want to start a mac webserver just for fun. Ive been looking on ebay at powermac g3& g4 servers but i dont have a clue on how to even get started on this. i currently have a powermac g4 533mhz but can anyone lead me on the right path to making my own web server
I a new to mac. I am trying to open a ".config" file but I get this error message: "There is no default application specified to open the document xxxx". Normally, on a Windows, I would just force open it with notepad as it conly contain text. How do I do the same with a Mac?
My comp. has worked perfectly, Then I installed some updates, Itunes i think? And the comp. Shut down, and when it restarts it works for a min or two, then freezes, and i get the beach ball, that just spins around and around forever.
if I don't try to open anything, or do anything when i restart it, it will just shut down, and restart, then when it comes to the Grey screen with the apple and the little circle below it, the circle looks all pixilated, and just freezes
that is the version its on (Taken two days ago, and sent to a buddy for other reasons completely)
I've just had OS X Server installed on my server and the numpty who set it up filled in my name wrong, completely the wrong surname. I know this seems like a minor issue but it's just another one of those things I'd like to be right. I can access my server through 'root' 'Local Administrator' and 'iainmorrison' but not one of them will allow me to change the details of 'iainmorrison' For the most part I will login via 'root' though I really would like the main account on the machine to be 'spadge' instead of 'iainmorrison'. I've also just checked through all the tabs of the Server Admin pane and it appears that 'Iain Morrison' also appears in the 'Registered to' box which I really want to change but again, can't, the changes simply revert as soon as I click Save or move to another tab. I know it's a little pedantic but when you have 700 of software on 2000 worth of server it's kinda nice for things to be right without stupid little mistakes like this. Is there any way I can fix this without having to get the guy who set it up to go back to the datacentre and start the installation from scratch?
I have Office 2008 Home and Student installed on my MBP. I recently upgraded to a hosted Exchange solution and they offer a download of Entourage 2008 that will allow Exchange Server interaction. When I loaded that version over top of my install, Entourage will not open. It gives me an error about the identity not being able to open the item.
Where do I put a file I want people to access via a web browser like [URL]. Where do I put file.txt once I have websharing on? I've tried both Sites and Public but none work.
I have a serverprogram from an external company that doesnt start after a restart of the mac that I run that server on. It starts the program but it doesnt start up the server of the program. All settings are right and I have consulted others with same config. After a restart the server turns up in the statusbar but as turned off. So I can go to the statusbar, click on the symbol and choose "start server".As I cant get the server to start up automaticly I was wondering if I can get the automator to start it up for me after a restart of the mac?Â
