OS X :: System Stopped Making System Sounds / Sounds From Applications Are Fine
Dec 21, 2008I noticed that my system stopped making system (i.e. Mac OS X) sounds for some reason. Sounds from applications are fine. I checked and unchecked the "play user interface sound effects" check box in the preference panes to no effect.

OS X Mavericks :: No Sound On MacBook Pro Except System Sounds
Aug 26, 2014I have a really weird problem with my sound on my Late 2011 Macbook Pro. The only sounds I can hear from the internal speakers are system sounds. No other audio can be heard from iTunes, VLC, browsers, etc. The only sounds I can hear are the ones found in "System Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects" and iMessage notifications. For a while, I could hear the volume up/down chirp, but even that's gone now.
Everything is fine when I plug in headphones. I thought it was the microswitch in the headphone port, but the Macbook Pro defaults back to "Internal Speakers" when the headphones are removed. Resetting the SMC and running the normal Disk Utility routine doesn't work either. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue with the speakers, either, or I probably wouldn't be able to hear only these specific sounds.Â

Nov 11, 2008today i was on my macbook and realized that all of my alert sounds were not working. for example, if i got a new message in ichat or new email there would be no sound. Also, when i take a screenshot there is no sound, but there usually is one. My speakers are working because i am able to play music in itunes. Mar 31, 2009Here is whats happening: my 3 y.o. 15 MBP is connected to external speakers (Bose MusicMonitor) and every time there is a sound, any system sound, say an email in, a volume chirp, or a Skype chirp, anything at all, I hear an audible POP, before hearing the actual sound, in fact the POP sort of overlays the sound. I hear the second POP sometimes, after the sound has sounded, so to speak, and sometimes the second one does not happen at all. To me it reminds me of the Pioneer Amp my dad used to have in the 70's, when you first turn that thing on, it would produce an audible POP. So, back to to this, it sounds like an amplifier POP by being awaken by the system, and I'm inclined to think it is the MBP's audio "amplifier" on its board. Oh, btw, both the speakers and the MBP's volume is set to low.

OS X :: Making Leopard Mail To Play Notification Sounds?
Nov 29, 2007I have recently thought I was going deaf because I was getting new mail and never hearing the sound for it. I thought maybe iTunes was on too loud or something. However, I've just done a test and no, Mail is definitely not playing the new mail sound. Speakers are the internal default ones, volume is up, but when I send mail to myself from a different Gmail account, when it arrives in Apple Mail there's no sound. This happens whether the app is active or in the background.
I'm sure I've heard it working a couple of times recently, but it's random and seems to be very much in the minority of occasions. Here's another weird thing it does - when I've received new mail during the day but Mail has been turned off, when I get home and open the application it searches for mail, downloads the new ones, and plays the 'No new mail' sound.
I've considered these things might be because I've already received the mail on my Blackberry, but this never used to happen in Tiger, and I'm using a POP Gmail service, not an IMAP one it shouldn't be able to tell I've already had them.
I have Dockstar installed but it worked fine with Dockstar before. Might it be causing a conflict somehow? Dockstar doesn't play any sounds, only changes how the mail notifications appear in the dock icon.
I don't use iChat so I don't know if this problem has affected other Apple apps. I've read some people having problems with that too.

Sep 14, 2010Previous History: I'm on a MacPro and I have my main user account on another volume than my system. This has worked just beautifully for me over the past years, sometimes there are drawbacks and it's kind of more failure-prone in some cases. This 'some cases' now happened again: there was a blackout and after that I couldn't login to my user account on the non-system volume anymore. I've been there once and hadn't any problems fixing it somehow, but now I screwed up big time.

He keeps having wireless problems because he likes to play with it and whenever one of his dam sites wont load he thinks its the computers fault and messes it up. Jan 18, 2010I am the Principal of a school and because of budget cuts - scary piece ahead - also the tech coordinator. I have a few older eMacs, some with airport cards and some without. My question/problem: I want to hook an eMac 10.4.11 directly into the Time Capsule to access the internet (the time capsule is acting as an extension of our wireless network). I have done this before successfully using an airport extreme, however, I am not successful to date in doing this with time capsule. It has been a while since I set up a computer this way. My question is am I missing a trick (using ethernet cord into LAN port), or is it not possible.
